I’ve got a T2i and mainly take wildlife/bird photographs. I have the 55-250 IS right now, and for a few months have been hemming and hawing over whether to buy the 400mm. Obviously I’d get a lot more reach out of the 400mm, but I’m just not sure if the image quality is going to actually really be worth the money for the lens. Anyone have any experience here and can tell me if it’s really that much of an upgrade, aside from the obvious extra reach with the 400?
In before Iron Dwarf mentions your ass.

LMFAO!!
BEST laugh I’ve had all week!!!
Thanks Nards!
I’m thrilled that you were the next one to post.
Another Rebel, spiffy. I shoot with a T3i.
I’m assuming you mean the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, and not the 100-400mm zoom lens. I haven’t used that lens specifically, but those that I know seem to really like it. I can’t say I’ve heard any complaints about it. I have read about some issues with the 100-400mm lens. You might get some better advice over at POTN.
Here’s a thread filled with shots taken using the 400mm f/5.6L lens.

Thanks, yeah I meant the 400 prime
How you like the T3i? I was looking at it, but the T2i was so similar and I wouldn’t have used the couple extra features on the T3i. Great camera though. My girlfriend is excited, I got the T2i, and gave her my old XTi, when I get the 400 (or whatever zoom I get) I’m giving her my 55-250.

One of my friends has the 100-400 mm L lens. Some of his pics are breathtakingly amazing, and the clarity is unbelievable. It is an L lens, and it lives up to it.
If you have the dough for it, I’d say go for it.

I’m really diggin’ the T3i. I love that camera. I added a grip to her. I now have twice the battery capacity, and it makes the camera bigger so my fat sausage fingers have more to hold onto. The flip out LCD screen gets way more use than I thought it would. With it I can shoot at angles that prevent me from using the view finder. That LCD screen, I think, is the biggest difference between the two cameras. Everything is pretty much fractional improvements.
Right now I have the 18-55mm, 55-250mm, and a fish eye lens that keep me entertained. I’ll slowly build up my lens collection over time.
Just keep in mind that 400 mm on an APS-C sensor is a lot and that it might be hard to find the bird if you can’t zoom out. Those pics were amazing though.

Those are the lenses I have now. I gave my XTi to my gf, and she’s getting both those lenses. Going to grab myself another zoom lense as well. What you using the fish eye for?

I’m pretty good at finding them and spotting them; I’ve been birdwatching for almost my entire 30 year life, I’ve gotten good at finding them with a camera almost instantly. But you’re right, that is a valid concern usually.

The fish eye lens is just for my amusement. I bought it for $50, and just randomly attach it to what ever lens I’m using to see what kind of weirdness it produces.
After having a lot of fun fooling around with that fish eye I’m considering buying the Wide Angle and Telephoto lens adapters too. Plus the price awesome for the shear amount of entertainment I get from them.
