Thib's Q&A
daffyduck wrote:
Hey CT, what are a few signs of when one should deload? Is this related to morning HR and Temp?
1. Loses motivation for training
 2. Morning heart rate (upon waking up) suddenly jumps up significantly
 3. No appetite
 4. Various aches and pains
 5. Stagnant progress

hey Thib can you tell me what excersises would be most beneficial to a hockey player?

Can I add in a request for info about Zinc and Copper as well? I’ve been thinking about it for a while, but that prior poster reminded me. When (if ever) should we be taking copper with our zinc? And in general are there other minerals that we should be worried about balancing? (Calcium and magnesium, etc etc)

Thanks for the prompt reply on the GH
I kinda figured that the only supp I knew of possibly was GABA but not really

The training advise makes sense as I only seen to get really lean (6-8%) by doing interval running

What programs would you recommend for training I know Lactate inducing WO’s help but I cant do that every training day I would imagine
Any programs you have worked on for this for say… a 4-6 week block such as your old OVT

thanks

Hi coach,

I love your work and was wondering if you could spare some advice in regards to deadlift grips. When should I used over under and when should I used a double over grip? I have heard that double over will build better grip strength overtime and avoid imbalances and that mixed should only be used for PRs, but I am unsure. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and hope all is well! Your articles are always fantastic!

Coach, when reintroducing carbs into the diet post-workout, what protocol should one follow? (I used the WPI, glutamine, glycine formula for a while)

Also, what is the least amount of carbs one can take in that will initiate muscle glycogen replenishment and maximize recovery?

Salut CT,

I’m a kinesiology student at Université de Montréal and I feel that I’m wasting a lot of time completing my bachelor degree. I don’t know if you ever stepped in the Biggest University in the Province gym (CEPSUM)? It looks like the 80’s in there : 2 medecine balls, no kettlebell, no room for olympic lifts, just a bunch of old machines from the 76 Olympics. (not that bad, but not great at all)

Even though, I do believe that it’s a good thing to get the “paper” and the scientific knowledges. On a practical side, what would you suggest me to do to improve my coaching skills on applied strength training for sports with the newest methods? Meet powerlifting, Olympic lifting coaches? Go with the NCCP?

An other question, when strength training interfere with a technical acquisition or speed improvment workout (sport specific), would you say that strength resistance training must ALWAYS be done after?

BTW, none of your fench book are available at the department library, I’m working on it…

The ones that will correct an individual’s specific weakness among the things needed to perform on the ice… without knowing the weaknesses I can’t provide you with a list of best exercises.

Hi Thibs!

I was planning my holidays and trying to eat as clean as possible. So, for convenience I was thinking of having shakes between meals.

I can’t find casein powder in my town, so I think I’ll have to stick to whey and/or egg protein powder with olive and fish oil.

What would you recommend in this case? I’m aiming to slow down the velocity of absortion of the shake, but can’t find the data of egg vs whey to compare…Thanks a lot!!

Whey is faster but better absorbed. Anyway, you’re splitting hairs… there might be a 10 minutes or so difference in absoprtion rate.

I thought it could be a bigger difference.

Thanks for your time and knowledge Thibs, you are a really big help to all of us!!!

Christian, any ideas on how to avoid the drowsiness that comes along with eating turkey? I would normally plan to eat protein first, then veggies, and hoping this would fill me up first. But the protein in this case is the very problem. Any ideas?

Have 10-20g of BCAAs 20 minutes prior. BCAAs and tryptophan uses the same carrier to cross the blood-brain barrier so BCAAs reduce the impact of tryp

Hey Coach, can speed deadlifts be used as a strength speed exercise?
daffyduck wrote:

Yes and no… deadlifts are normally a two speed movement with a gradual acceleration. You can still do speed deads, but you have to control the weight up to the knees and explode upwards past them.

A better option would be a power clean, a power snatch, or a jump goodmorning.

Coach, on deadlifts, from the start to the bottom of the knee is tough, but once I get to the knee, it’s smooth sailing. I have only pulled 405 x1 from the floor, but can fairly easily RDL 365 x6. Any suggestion on how to improve the bottom portion of the deadlift?

thanks Thib well my pressing in general is a specific weakness but for more of hockey weaknesses, grip and forearm strenth is a weakness but also what would you do for a hockey player that needed more speed and quickness and needed to be stonger on his skates? weather it was in the weight room or like some type of sprinting or something

Coach,

I’ve read your “Pump down the volume” article quite a few times since it came out. I also was originally introduced to low volume style training when you were involved in the physique clinic.

I remember you saying when you want to put on mass, your prefered method of training was a low volume approach (maybe not your exact words, but along those lines).

So my question is, what is your personal favorite low volume weekly layout?

And also, wouldn’t the Dante Trudel inspired split from your article be absolute hell to recover from? I see its closely related to the DC layout and it seems like doing lower and upper body twice a week would put an absolute tremendous strain on the body unless maybe something like a heavier upper day early in the week, and then a lighter upper day later in the week. Am I correct in my thinking? Or is training heavy each day on that particular split more for the genetically gifted?

Thanks in advance CT

Hi CT,

I’m on the last week of the Accumulation phase of your HSS-100 program and I feel drained and fatigued.

Would it be a good idea to take a week off before starting the Intensification phase or do I carry on?

Thanks in advance!
