Thib's Q&A

Thib,

In the past, I’ve seen you write about using offset curls with the pinkies flush against the outer plates of the DB’s, since this increases stress on the short head of the biceps due to the increased requirements to maintain supination/resist pronation.

During incline curls, would doing the opposite (thumbs flush against the inside plates) do anything at all to increase stress on the long head of the biceps or be of any value at all?

Slightly, but it would not have the same effect since the long head is not a pronator.

hey CT,

thanks for the diet advice. i already see a difference.

Quick question…this question is regarding training…

Im looking to improve my strength for MMA and grappling…

if the worlds strongest men had to wrestle the top powerlifters who would win??..lol

bascally who is stronger?

what type of training wwould give me more bone crushing power?[/quote]

Bill Kazmeir gave the best answer to that question when he once was asked who was stronger, him (strongman/powerlifter) or Alexeyev (olympic lifter).

He answered: ‘‘He is the strongest in his lifts, I’m the strongest in mine’’.

Bottom line… if you want to be a beast, do all types of strength training… powerlifts, olympic lifts, strongman lifts

Hey Thibs i was just curious too see what your old school day of training lookes like, Thanks

Hello Christian,I was wondering…If someone is trying to lose fat!And there on 50grams or less a day of carbs…On there carb up day what carbs do you recommend! As i know you quite anti-grain?But on carb up days are grains ok!Or should i focus more on low GI fruits?

It depends… I have around 20 exercises to pick from. Next Monday’s article will show you some of them.

Hey CT,

I am currently following a low carb eating plan and I am trying to take in about 2400 calories a day to start leaning out. I am basically following your Refined Physique Trans prgm and was wondering if all the peri-workout nutrition should be in addition to my 2400 calories or as part of them?

do you have a gym that you own or are connected to in some way?..if I was ever in cananda…would i be able to stop in and get a PT session or attend a seminar with you?..do you offer anything like that?

My fiance wants to take a vaca up north to go play in the snow, so i figured why not see if you have anything going on that the general public could attend…

Once again thanks for all the great help

Thib, do you currently accept online clients? (not like day-to-day training, but a one-time training plan based on individual needs, etc)

Hey coach,

I am just curious, how does your current strength and power level compare to when you were an olympic lifter?

Coach T,

Great vertical jump program yesterday.

2 quick questions though - what is YOUR vertical Coach??

At it’s highest and at what age?

Not sure if you’ve ever posted it before.

And could you put in order, as in which program builds upon which, the following: Hot Wheels in a Hurry; Get Strong, Get Fast, Get Vertical; and your new Superman Vertical Program, based on me being a basketballer, having 12 odd weeks to train, with the last 2-3 weeks being pre-season for me.

Thanks Thib.

When I was still competing as an Olympic lifter I had a 40’’ vertical. I could dunk a basketball… may not seems like much but I’m 5’8’’ with short arms and was 230 at the time.

40"! Wow Coach.

So tell me then Coach, what merit then is there for a basketballer like myself, or a volleyballer too, to EXCLUSIVLEY train as an olympic lifter, when such speed, lower body strength, and jumping ability can be developed, such as what you achieved with that massive vertical jump, and excellent shoulder strength and flexibility?

Isn’t that EXACTLY what basketballers need?? Or would it just be overkill? Obviously, training volume would be an issue, but do you get what I’m getting at?

I can’t see why not? A powerful lower body coupled with awesome shoulders would do wonders for any ball player.

Can you PM me if this requires a lenghty discussion?

I’m also interested to hear what you see about taking on online clients, as I’d be interested for sure. I feel your athletic training programs would do wonders for me.

Thanks Coach

hey Coach,

I wanted to use a shoulder day in my next lifting routine. Does this look like a good routine or should I change the exercises/exercise order/rep-set schemes? I’m currently trying to fix some weak areas (shoulders, back, calves) and i’m going to do your ‘you don’t know jack about your back’ program.

BB Shoulder Press (5x5)
Seated Clean and Press (3x12-15)
Shrugs (3x8-12)
Lat/Front DB Raises (3x8-12)
Pull-ups (3 sets of BW to failure)(for the back program)
Calves

Any suggestions?

Hey Coach Thib,

I’m currently looking into getting certified to start working as a personal trainer. I searched through some threads on the site and checked out several of the organizations.

The thread consensus from all that I read, for my purposes, is that the ISSA would be best. They contacted me today regarding my interest, and I was very impressed. (They seemed very interested in providing a good education/foundation without just taking money free of any care for their students.)

The woman I spoke to about my interest in their CFT program also recommended I follow their SPN? (Sports Nutrition certification) program in addition to the CFT. I wondered if this was a good idea or if she was just trying to be a good salesperson.

I asked one of the more educated trainers at my gym about organizations, and he referred me to ACE, NASM, NSCA, another “N” one, and AAAI. He had nothing to say of ISSA, as if the five he named were at the forefront of reputable certification programs.

I’m in the process of getting a college education in an unrelated field (music), and realize the acquisition of a CSCS certification will have to wait a couple of years when I have my degree.

As for getting my foot in the industry-door, what would you recommend with regards to personal training/nutrition specialist certification programs?

Thanks for your time, I’ve read countless CT posts about your busy schedules. By the way, your honeymoon/L-Leucine story was quite captivating!

No question for once, just to say what you gave Prof. X is one hell of a diet.

Yet again its obvious why your considered one of the, if not the top Canadian coaches.

hey coach, i decided to take leucine after u endorsed it but whenever i eat it with meals, it kind of ruins the meal.

and when i put it in water, it doesnt dissolve in the water at all and the powder with water also ruins the meal
so i just put the scoop of leucine into my mouth and down it with water.

i was wondering if thats okay and will i get the same benefits
and i was also wondering how you yourself take it

CT

I want to be a strength and conditioning coach just like lots of the authors on here. Any advice on starting out? Thanks.

Thib, which others method for strenght increases do you recommend aside from weekly ondulate training(Texas method or Bill Starr 5x5: 1 heavy day, 1 light and 1 medium, and increasing weight each week)?.

Thanks.

If you are in my neck of the woods, sure. I’m in Levis which is 20 minutes away from Quebec City

Your body doesn’t recognize calories, only nutrients. But yes, the nutrients ingested peri-workout do count towad your daily total.
