Thib's Q&A

Thib,
does the body every become resistant to high cortisol levels like it does to insulin?

Sorry if I’m being dense about this, but cold milled flax seeds contain hulls? (My bag just says “Cold Milled Flax Seeds” – can’t find anywhere on the packaging where it talks about hulls).

Thanks again.

i swear Charles should get someone to do a recipe book it would sell…

I don’t because I don’t use them. I was just saying that they can be helpful, but I don’t have any experience with them.
Thib,

I’m putting together a garage gym with some friends of mine and wanted to ask your opinion on a few “tertiary” pieces since we have all of the big basics and secondary stuff covered.

Which of the two preacher curl benches pictured looks like the better bench? We’re deciding between these and figured asking you would be a good idea.

For a seated calf machine, what is the best type of foot plate…angled, flat, rounded, or something else? How about on a standing machine. I’ve seen various foot blocks on machines and was wondering what is optimal/what the differences to consider between the types/shapes of the blocks would be.

For a leg curl unit, what type would you recommend…prone, standing, kneeling, or perhaps even a prone version like Strive’s where you can alter the resistance curve? Is there a particular brand you’d recommend above others?

Thanks for your help.

Here was the other preacher bench I meant to include.

Hey CT. I’m doing and HIT type program using the template you came up with in you training strategy handbook article:
Day 1: Shoulders, traps, triceps, abs
Day 2: Back, rear delts, lower back
Day 3: Off
Day 4: Chest, biceps, abs
Day 5: Quads, hamstrings, calves
Day 6: Off
Day 7: Off

I’m out of school now so have a little more time. Would it be possible to increase the volume so instead of 2 exposures per 2 weeks I get three per 2 weeks? What would be a good split to follow? If the frequency was increased would you suggest lowering the volume even more for each bodypart?

I wouldn’t choose any of those preacher benches. You need one that has a steep angle (perpendicular to the ground) as it’s the most effective way to do the exercise.

The one above has both a steep angle and a 45 degree angle and is the one I always use.

Cool, thanks CT.

WHOA. I’ve got a freaky-ass situation that just popped up a minute ago. I went to take a piss and I pissed bright orange/mango-colored! It wasn’t pinkish or reddish, so I’m pretty sure it’s not blood, but ORANGE.

The only thing I can think of is that I just started using DIM Avail today (2 capsules with breakfast, lunch and dinner, so 6 total per day), and those capsules are BRIGHT orange. It’s the only orange thing I’m consuming.

Is DIM likely to have that effect??

Thanks in advance, Thib!

Thib,

The picture you posted looks like it is the standing model made by Atlantis while the second one I posted was their seated model, which they claim can be used from either side.

The company that makes the first model I posted says the pad adjusts to one of four angles: 30-degrees, 45-degrees, 60-degrees, and 90-degrees/completely vertical.

In the final analysis, you would say the Atlantis standing model(or the brand and model you picture if it is not Atlantis) is ultimately the way to go and superior to the seated models?

Thanks again.

CT,
I do fasted cardio 1st thing in the am, train in mid morning, and play tennis in the pm, 5 days a week (run or mountain bike on the weekends). Would taking Power Drive after any of these sessions help with recovery?

It will help with the neural portion but will do nothing for your metabolic recovery, which will be the real problem with this inadequate schedule.

Hi Coach.
I believe the best method except underwater weighing (UWW), Bod Pod (APD) or DEXA to calculate the body composition for a client as a personal trainer is the skinfolds (ACSM: 7 sites, Poliquin: 12 sites).

Have you any information about 9 sites protocol? Why all the nutritionists and dieticians use other method?. I completely disagree with this professionalism. I think this attitude is wrong because Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) is very overrated. Have you any comment or personal opinion about it?
Thanks.

Coach,

I just read your statements about high estrogen levels in the water in the UK-very scary!!!

Would filtering the water make a difference, as in with a standard Brita water filter?

Also, is it not true that bottled water from plastic bottles has higher estrogen levels as well?

Best wishes,

James

I want to incorporate snatch grip deadlifts into my routine, but without straps I can’t move much weight. Should I use straps, or bite the bullet and start light?

If you are simply using the lift to improve your physique, straps are fine.
what if your goal is to be stronger? no straps?

Coach, question about squat jumps:

How much air is one supposed to get? Keeping it on the 30-40% 1rm range. Should it be quite a bit or whatever one gets as long as there’s the intent to jump as high as possible?

If the filter is high quality, it will help, but will not solve the problem entirely.

Yes it is, but it is especially problematic if the bottle is heated, otherwise it’s not ‘‘that’’ bad.
