Thib Q&A no.6

CT,

One more thing. Everyone has a different opinion about ab work, especially when prepping for a contest. If your goal was to get shredded in 10-12 weeks, most people say to keep your routine the same (+ added cardio), but would you add more ab work?

Thanks!

I’ve read through the HP mass training and have started with this program last week but IĆ¢??m still unsure about the secondary lift (how many sets for each week). For example on Monday and Tuesday IĆ¢??m doing primary upper body what would be the sets for the secondary lift (lower body week two).

How effective is German Volume Training for natural trainees in terms of hypertrophy? Would GVT be better utilized by drug-enhanced athletes?

CT,

I just read Chad Waterbury’s article about his supplemental Pullup/Lunge/pushup program, where you perform these movements throughout the day and slowly increase volume. I’m currently using your HP Mass routine and love it.

Do you think the PLP routine would be a good way to ā€œdo more workā€, or would I be better off just adding more eccentricless sled work? The PLP routine sounds good, but I’m concerned the accumulated volume over time would affect my ability to recover and have a negative impact on my pressing performance.

My goal over the next 8 weeks or so is to shed some excess bodyfat while still maximizing my strength gains. Just looking for a way to add some extra work during the week.

Thanks in advance.

coach you competed and trained like olympic style weightlifter.when you suffer from aches and pains in joints and tendons with which way you face the pains and aches?you get some special supplement?have you propose any ways for treatment of joints and tendons?

I cycle GVT into my training every now and then, each time I accumulate new stretch marks. You should try it, especially if you have never done it before.

Anyone…

when multiple lifts begin stalling, what is the first thing YOU change?

(just looking for some ideas b/c i love my current split)

Coach Thibs, i try to lessen the CNS fatigue as much as possible to be able to do more work.
and recently i have been thinking wether syngergist causes more cns fatigue then agonist. What is your opinon does for example Chest/Biceps or Back/Chest cause less fatigue then Chest/Trieps? Since the same muscle’s doesn’t get used as much?Or is there no difference?

Hey Christian,

Thanks for the continued Q&A thread. Anyways, I’ve recently competed in my first powerlifting meet. I feel that I performed well, especially on my deadlift, BUT watching the video i noticed that on my 2nd and 3rd attempts, when the weight was heavier, I tended to let my hips rise too quickly and almost finish the like a stiff legged deadlift.

My back seemed to stay mostly neutral and my lockout felt pretty strong…i felt that I just lacked the strength to stay upright during the initial pull. What I wanted to know is what is a good plan of attack for fixing this other than simply focusing on technique (because my technique looked sound until I approached my max).

I had been considering using snatch grip deadlifts as an assistance move to strengthen the quads and force me to start with my butt lower…would this help the problem?

(I don’t know if this will give you any insight, but my squat is significantly weaker than my deadlift)

Thanks CT

Love the HPMass - been making gains and having a ton of fun.

But - I’ve been getting a lot of carpal tunnel/median nerve irritation (waking up with numb fingers, etc.) possibly because of the increased frequency. In relation to previous programs I’ve used, because of the pushing emphasis there seems to be added strain on the wrists.

Have you ever encountered this situataion before? Could it spring from a defect in technique?

I’m currently just adding stretching / nerve flossing, but any advice would be appreciated.[/quote]

i’m having the same numbness in my ring and pinkie fingers in both hands when i wake up in the morning. i do have tiny ass wrists. i wasn’t worried about it until i read this post about carpal tunnel syndrome. is this a problem and if so what should be done about it? thanks to anyone who replies

CT,

I’ve been on a ā€œtraditionalā€, mainly whole food, mass gaining diet since November 2010. I’ve gained a bit over 30 lbs so far and remained pretty lean. I’m now looking to try your Pulse Feast. I just have some questions if you could please clarify.

Here’s my understanding of the program. Please correct if I am misunderstanding anything.

  • On workout days (usually every day), one only consumes 2 pulses, peri-workout nutrition, and a feast.

  • A pulse consists of 3 scoops of MAG-10 in 30 oz of water

  • Going off 30 days in a month, each MAG-10 bottle has 30 servings or 10 days. Basically 3 bottles/month, correct (~$165/mo)?

  • Regarding peri-workout nutrition, what’s the time frame for the pre-workout nutrition? I’ve been having some carbs and protein about 1.5 hours pre, but it doesn’t sound like this fits into the Pulse Feast protocol. Basically, I could just have my Surge mixture starting 15 mins pre, and Surge Recovery post, correct?

  • During the feeding window, should one worry about mixing protein, fats, and carbs all in one meal? Or should I break it out into P+C and P+F?

Thanks

I’ve got carpal tunnel in both hands at the moment. I started olympic weightlifting about 2-3 weeks before I started the HP mass program and noticed it about a week or 2 after starting HP Mass. I was doing HP mass and 2 days of olympic lifting which replaced the Neural charge days. So I was averaging at least 2 hours of lifting every single day for about 6 weeks. I also work at trader joe’s so I do a lot of register work where I pick up items all day. On top of that I was sleeping on my hands and I would wake up with them extremely numb.

I went to the chiropractor, got acupuncture, went to my regular doc, orthopedic surgeon - all multiple visits. None of that helped at all. Got an EMG test (nerve test) done and found out I had carpal tunnel in both hands, had pinched nerves in both elbows and both wrists and had SEVERE nerve damage. The numbness started out just seldom in my left hand, then minor constant numbness/loss of sensation in my left hand and started getting worse and eventually ended up with both hands constantly pretty numb (when I say constant I mean that now there was not one second of my life that my hands felt normal and had full sensation).

I also thought that this would go away with time and my body had to just get used to it. Well, since I sort of ignored it for a while it just kept getting worse and most people were saying I would need to get surgery in both hands.

I would definitely say get it checked out and listen to your body. If it’s getting worse, ease off or work around it and don’t do things that bother it. Get some splints/braces for your hands/wrist to wear while sleeping at night if your waking up with them numb. DO NOT IGNORE THIS PROBLEM. I’ve never had any signs of carpal tunnel before this except when I would wake up and my hands would be numb from sleeping on them.

My hands are getting better now since I took a week off of work and got a doc note for limited register time and am not doing ANY upper body lifting. The only things that have helped my CTS is this nerve support formula I’m taking and this machine I rented that ended up costing me a ton of money. I’m just hoping that they get completely better soon and I can continue my normal lifting.

I am not blaming HP mass at all for my CTS. I really think it was just that my hands were basically never getting any rest and had new stress placed on them with the Olympic lifting.

Sorry for the long post but I just don’t want any one else to go through the same stuff I have. It sucks and because I pushed through it and ignored the problem for too long thinking my hands would return to normal once the frequency was lowered, I have now had to take 2 or even 3 steps back because I THOUGHT I was taking 1 step forward.

If anyone has any questions please go ahead and ask.

Coach,

I’ve been loving all the stuff you post lately, especially the livespill stuff. I have seen good results with HPMass and I love the complexes too.

My question is about performance exercises–
I know that the basic principle in your training of performance muscles is to explode the weight with as much force as possible with each rep. You have also mentioned that working simply for the pump is not the goal, but you will get ā€œpumpedā€ as a result of the HTH principles. Does this negate need to focus on the ā€œfeelā€ of the muscle? I need to bring up my delts, especially my rear delts. I have a hard time ā€œfeelingā€ my delts in general during lifts. Even assistance work leaves me wondering what I need to do, because they arent growing as much as my traps and chest, plus ive been trying to correct bad posture.
I have been focusing on overhead pressing, especially push pressing, but my strength isnt increasing like it is with chest pressing. Ironically, my shoulders do get more tired when i do flat and decline bench. Have you encountered this issue with your athletes?

Hi CT,
Thanks heaps for all of your great info.

I started your HPM program 2 weeks ago and am really enjoying it.

I’m not 100% sure about the neural charge training though.

Tonight I did 4 exercises x 4 reps x 6 circuits alternating the exercises. 50% upper body 50% lower.

It took about 15 mins and I felt a bit puffed after it but recovered quickly.

My question is how I should gauge the volume I should do and also when to move on to higher level exercises.

It feels a bit ā€œeasyā€ right now but I realise it may be meant to feel like this as itis just a way to keep your CNS in optimal condition.

Cheers

@ Christian Thibaudeau - Hey Thibs I wanted to get your feedback on this topic and I would really appreciate your help. For your ā€œDiamond Calves and Old school exercisesā€ article is it possible to substitute weighted smith machine standing calf raises instead of the standing calf raise machine.

Because I dont have access to a standing calf raise machine at my gym. And what is a good number of times to perform that workout every week for someone who has absolutely NO VISIBLE CALVES at all. Seriously Lol. Thanks for your help and keep up the good work.
Thank you for your time

CT,

I use your principles for some time now, and I’m putting on a lot
of muscule very fast. But due to weightcategories in my particular sport
I can’t weigh more than 100 kg. My question is how can I gain strengt whitout
gaining a lot of weight? And for a sport like judo what kind of training would you
suggest. The same type of training like the football axample in the training lab?

Thanks,

ct, another carb cycling question.
if one is consuming 33 g of fat in a day, and the fat from oats, chicken etc bring the total to 33 g would i not consumer any additional fat? or do i consume 33 g from fatty sources, eg oils, nuts etc?
thanks again

CT,

What program would you recommend for an intermediate lifter looking to get into powerlifting for the first time? I competed in bodybuilding during college and have since changed programs several times to accommodate different needs. Now, after recovering from a labral tear, I am looking to get back my upper body strength and want to start training and competing as a powerlifter under 200 lbs. Thank you for your time.

Hey coach, I’ve been using HPM principles for awhile now and they’ve been working great. I’m starting to get really involved in Olympic lifting and think it’s something i’d like to pursue competitively. Can you give me some tips for a good program for someone who wants to really focus on the Olympic lifts?
Thanks Coach.

Thanks for sharing your story. The situation sucks but it’s good to know I’m not alone in this, and it’s encouraged me to get to the doc asap.

I did have this issue on one program before but pushed through and it eventually went away. But maybe it just went into hiding for a while!

What is the nerve formula you’re taking?
