The Zombie may be Alive!

Saw you posting over on strongman, looks like a lot of their training is in line with what you’re doing now. Gonna have to stay away from the bacon to keep the weight down. Love the workouts you’re doing.
Thank You sir. Yea…have to ration that bacon. I love watching the WSM competitions on TV, and the functional aspect of some of the strength training they do. We have a family farm I’ll be responsible for maintaining in the not too distant future, and I expect this training will help me to stay strong for that for years to come.

Does it hurt to rotate your arm into position to hold a bar to squat?

And you don’t intend to return to benching?
It hurt me quit a bit before my surgery to get my arms rotated back to grab the bar to squat. Haven’t gotten under the bar again to see if it still does. I’ve never used a SSB bar but it sounds like the thing for me right now. The damned gym I used to go to here in town has a piece of shit squat rack, and no SSB bar. So, I’m gonna get something going on my own here.

I may train Bench again when it’s safe to do it, but only to get a little strength back. Doc said heavy benching will bring me back to him for complete shoulder replacement, the cartilage is completely gone in the socket, so I guess there’s no going back after it’s worn away. I haven’t been able to bench more than 185 without significant pain, I’m in no hurry to try it again any time soon. And if I ever have to have surgery again it will be too soon, that sucks!
Something I’ve been watching is where they take some cartilage out of you, culture it until they’ve grown a mat of it, and then put it back in. It is a developing surgical technique. Using your own tissue avoids rejection issues. But I would take care so I didn’t need it for a few more years as they get it improved.

Thanks E! The bacon is just a weekend thing for us, like Sunday mornings, usually during the Winter, Daddy will make blueberry pancakes and bacon, with real Michigan maple syrup. Mmmmmmm
You’ve been spying. That’s my Sunday morning routine every winter…Buckwheat Pancakes (fiber, protein, and REALLY filling), Bacon and Eggs (note the order!) and of course, real maple syrup. My daughters love Sundays in the winter. I can’t eat like that in the summer.

Nothing better IMO…I think we’ve got it good up here in Michigan.

Thanks for the information DZ. I tried them with a light (~50lb) stone yesterday, holding them down at arms length. I’ll try them your way next time.

Damn…I never realized playin 18 holes in 80 degree weather was such a workout. I was worn out all day yesterday.

Today
Tire sled
3/4 mile drag 35lb plate

5 sets-100 steps cinder block farmers
in between those sets I did
Bent over rows
1x10xbar
1x8x95
1x6x115
3x6x135
3x6x155

Cinder block shrugs
3x15

Abs
3x20

That sounds like the thing for me…pretty cool. Should have known some one was working on that one.

Dragging sled
3/4 mile w/35 plate

Hack Squats
1x10x135
1x10x155
1x8x185
1x6x205

SLDL
1x10x135
1x8x155
1x6x185
1x6x205

Here’s something new…let’s call it Rock Squats.
That’s right, grab the nearest large stone, set up in the squat position, and go after it.
3x10 with about a 40 lb stone. Pretty good, I’ll try a larger rock next time.

well now - your rock squat idea has several variations that jump to mind:

Zercher rock squat (low carry)
Front rock squat (high carry)
and
asymmetric rock squat (rock on one shoulder) almost a 1-legged squat.

Cool…I thought about that for a moment while doing these. I held the rock up high into the chest. Kinda had to to get below parallel.

Your comeback is really taking off DZ. Great work!

training and the comeback trail seem to be going nicely dads.

If you ever start benching again, i would think you would want to take a very narrow grip.

That’s what I’m doing. Narrow.

good girl. I never surgery level trouble with my shoulders, but I really messed them up several years ago doing decline presses. I discovered LYTP and benching with a narrow grip, and I have been pretty much fine ever since.

You are kicking some major ass. I retired my sled a couple months ago, but with winter coming, I am rethinking this…

You all are probably right, and I guess I’m just paranoid right now. I REALLY don’t need any more injuries, both financially and physically. I still have a fair amount of pain nearly constantly, and can’t raise my right arm over my head.
MJ, that sled kicks ass! That was your idea wasn’t it? I got that over at the build your home made equipment thread. This is the third incarnation of the draggy sled and I’m diggin’ the hell out of this thing. In fact, I’m heading that way now.

Draggy sled
3/4 mile w/45lb today

Deads
1x10x135
1x8x185
1x6x225
1x4x275
1x4x295
4x4x315

Added 10 lb to the sled because road debris had made the dragging somewhat easier the other day. I didn’t take into account it rained heavily yesterday and washed it all away. Gave the deads everything I had left.

I did dips when I had should problems and they did not seem to bother my shoulders at all.
daddyzombie wrote:
You have pain even when not using your shoulder? And you can’t lift your arm over your head? Oh my. I guess I’m very lucky. Are you still seeing your surgeon? Would it warrant a follow-up MRI?

Trust your body. There’s no reason to rush into anything. If certain lifts hurt your shoulder in the wrong way, DON’T DO THEM. I wouldn’t worry the slightest bit about being paranoid. You and I both know how much cuff tears suck.

Dips are outrageously hard and painful for people who have undergone rotator cuff surgery, Elaikases, as are millie presses. I can’t really do either of these yet.

I can't see being able to do dips right now. Everything I do with that arm causes pain to some level. Certain things really hurt, some things only a little. It does seem to be getting better, though, very slowly. I remind myself what he said about fixing everything he could in there without opening up the shoulder. I only had two follow up apps, after surgery, and like I said before I thought the rehab was crap, and I told them so when they called me a few weeks ago.

I’m enjoying what I’m doing, and I have a long way to go to be as fit and strong as I can be. So, I’m in no hurry here.
