The World's Most Dominant Athletes?

Uh, how about paying some homage to Magnus ver Magnusson? Didn’t he win WSM 6 freakin times?

Federer was regarded even by Sampras as the most dominant tennis player of all time.

If we are talking skill-based “sports” such as golf, then we might as well throw in Formula One, in which Schumacher is the considered the sole reason for people being turned off from the sport for so long; he just won too damn much. If Ayrton Senna hadn’t died, I don’t think Schumacher would have enjoyed such a long streak.

Boxing: Ali for the quality of competition he was up against, Marvin Haggler and Sugar Ray Robinson who I think had the most fights in the most weight classes. Jack Dempsey for being a bad ass sumbitch.

And seriously, unless I missed it, shame on all of you: Jesse Owens should be in the top five, for breaking what, 4 world records in about an hour at the Olympics, and tying a 5th? The man had a street named after him in Berlin for God’s sake, nevermind that he was reported to race track horses (for money) and beat them in 40 yard dashes. Dude is an icon.

Anyway, Kobe Bryant is the worlds most dominant athlete right now. He is just freaking unbelievable.

Rick Ross …

Michael Jordan counts - but only if you include the referees who called every foul in his favor.

I love Mike Tyson, but his wins came against guys who ended up being nobodies.

GSP- no way, too many losses and too unpredictable. He looks dominant, but then so does BJ Penn (and Penn won their fight IMO.) Yet they’ve both lost to fighters they shouldn’t have lost to.

For now in MMA, only Fedor can be considered dominant, with Anderson Silva having a good chance to get there. And Fedor still has to face Sylvia and Couture. If he beats one of those two, he’ll be dominant. We’ve seen too many guys who had big success in PRIDE lose to UFC guys.

or the 6 world championships

Like Hall of Famers Larry Holmes and Micheal Spinks?

Holmes was almost 40 and Spinks was basically a cruiserweight/light heavy fighting hvwt b/c the division was weak, no?

If I’m wrong, let me know. I know a bit about boxing, but not that much.

My post should have said “the vast majority of his wins”

Oh, and didn’t Spinks get knocked out in 90 seconds?

Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the super-footballers of the modern game.

Uh, the most dominant heavyweight of all time is Joe Louis. Marcianos record is better [he beat an old Louis], but Louis is still widely regarded as the best HW of all time.

I disagree. Man O’War. 21 starts, 20 victories, 1 loss by half a length. Was turned around at the start of the race and almost won that one despite the position and jockey error.

Didn’t win the Kentucky Derby because he didn’t run. Amazing horse. Was seabiscuit’s grandfather or great grandfather or something. Most champions have lineage to him.

Just want to throw in Barry Sanders for football.

If he had Emitt Smith’s Line he’d have an untouchable record.

You know, I hear stuff like this a lot, but I don’t know if it’s true. Part of what made Barry great was his juking, quick change of directions, and improvisations. I just don’t think he would have been the same player with that O-Line. He wouldn’t have been Barry Sanders.

At the same time, he we probably still be a perennial Pro-Bowler, as would a lot of backs with that line.

I hear you and I agree, it’s just as hard for his own team to keep tabs on him as it is for the defense, I just think that if you up the talent level of the O-Line he’s got much more to work with.

Plus, you can argue he’d have the ball in his hands more often with a better team, or, with a top notch line he’s in the secondary more often, and harder to corral one on one.

Exactly!

How come Dick Butkus only got one mention? WHat the hell is that?
Barry Sanders in college copied from Wikipedia “He set college football season records with 2,628 yards rushing, 3,249 total yards, 234 points, 39 touchdowns, of which 37 were rushing (also a record), 5 consecutive 200 yard games, scored at least 2 touchdowns in 11 consecutive games, and 9 times he scored at least 3 touchdowns.” That is what a good line does for Barry.

Gotta mention Dick Butkus again, and what about Jim Brown? Jim Brown was one of the most dominant players ever.

Joe Frazier only lost to George Foreman(2x) and Muhammed Ali(2 losses and one win). How does he not get more credit? Anyone that has only lost to those two is a legend in my book. Joe Frazier is one of the toughest SOB’s ever, I watched his fight on ESPN classic where he lost his title. He makes Rocky look like a quitter. Foremen knocks him down 6 times, and he pops back up every time. That was back when George was a lean mean killen machine.

Mariuz is one of my favs, He is just a bad ass mofo.

Hope I spelled those right![/quote]

I wouldn’t put Marusz there, Savickas routinely beats him at the Arnold. If he’s really the World’s strongest man, he shot dominate that.
