The Watchmen Discussion Thread

Movie was great. I just want a watchmen book discussion thread. Only a handful of people read the book before seeing the movie.

Trouble is, the majority of people aren’t going to want to only discuss the GN. I would think that most would want to make at least some comparison between the book and movie versions.

There really wasn’t much point in jumping on us for making two throwaway observations about the inclusion of some footage from Road Warrior, when people have complained about how Doc Manhattan’s dick got star billing (Who knows…Snyder might have included that porno footage to flip the bird to people who whinge about the lack of female nudity in the movie -I’m sure the guy wasn’t scared of throwing a dash of satire into the mix - but then, you’re not prepared to discuss that).

There are plenty of reasons to justify Dr. Manhattan’s nudity in the GN (I’ve already explained most of these, so I can really be accused of not discussing the GN), and yet you said nothing. If you want to discuss the GN, then get some posts up about it, instead of trying to make out that the people who have at least sustained some form of discussion, as some kind of uber-nerds who insist on scrutinizing the smallest details.

If you want a debate, don’t sit back and wait for somebody else to initiate it, and don’t start getting abusive when the thread isn’t developing to your liking - especially when your own input has been minimal.

Besides, a debate about the GN alone is going to be damned hard, if we are going to keep this thread spoiler -free. Which is why I didn’t write about five times as much about the revision of the child-killer’s death, because I’d probably end up giving away everything in the movie [/i]and[/i] GN combined…

The podium is yours…

Oh, I was just fucking around. Movie was good and I just don’t feel the book is so deep. Nothing I said was personal, just being an asshole. That’s it.

I would be up for an entire movie about Rorschach. He was awesome.

The rest of the movie was OK, but I wasn’t thrilled about it, and I read the book.

Things I didn’t like: (SPOILERS)

  1. The love story b/w Night Owl and Silk Spectre. But I didn’t like that part of the book either. It served no purpose in the story. None. But at least we got to see her naked.

  2. There was enough cock and man-ass in this movie to sink a small battleship. This could have easily been cured by having Carla Gugino topless for at least 5 minutes. I don’t care if that’s not in the book, that’s what had to be done.[/quote]

i think the love story between night owl and silk spectre worked because she was at times irrational in her reactions to people and it was explained within the subsequent revelations in plot that she was the comedian’s daughter, her mother hid it from her while forcing her to become a quasisuperheroine. it was that superficial relationship between and daughter which led her into a relationship with a detached older guy. it is another story line about the emotional lives of the characters just like night owl and rorschach. simple. and his blue nakedness was fine with me while she was super hot. carla gugino is always a wonder to behold. having said all this i am female but i guess some guys are a little more uptight than they think they are.

Owl and Spectre hooked up just like Ozy and the Comedian and Roar-Shack [it’s better looking that way, dammi] and Dr. Manhatten . . . 'cept they bumped uglies and didn’t kill each other . . .

[The Watchmen each had their antithesis on the team, and were zeroed by the end of the story]

I thought it was an amazing movie although I never read the comic. It kinda struck me like one of those secret agent movies how it’s really in depth with alot of sub stories that pull together in the end.

however, 99 luft balloons? wtf?

I saw it a couple of days ago.

I thought the change in ending was a good choice. Rather than introduce something COMPLETELY different and unexpected (alien invasion? WTF?), Snyder makes Dr. Manhattan the fall guy. Efficient use of characters.

I think Snyder upped the level of violence a lot (this has already been mentioned) and I think that was a good thing. Made it more fun.

I think Dr. Manhattan’s voice was excellent. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but it worked. He talks… exactly like he did before the change. Calm. Sedate. Except this time, he’s a somewhat all-powerful being, radiating power out his extremities. I thought it was an intelligent choice.

It’d been a while since I’d read the comic book, and I felt they got all the main points. I really don’t care if it’s 15 or 20 years. I really don’t care if the young miss jupiter was 18 or 16 when she first joined The Watchmen. Veidt’s character worked, although I WAS disappointed that they didn’t use the ‘nothing ever ends, Veidt’ line.

On the whole, I give the movie 10/10. It had a lot to do to live up to the book, and I think it did all it needed to or could. I’m saddened by all the people I’ve talked to IRL who didn’t read the comic and didn’t like the movie. I thought it was great. So it goes.

I liked it. But the problem was, there was a group of idiots in the row behind us who just wouldn’t fucking stop talking throughout the fucking movie! I am talking about full blown conversations, and not even whispering, but using squeaky annoying voices. I was so close to turning around and telling them to SHUT THE FUCK UP, but I didn’t want to make a scene. It ruined it for me because I couldn’t hear the dialogue…and every lull in their conversation had me anticipating when they were going to start up again. Talk about inconsiderate. It sounded like five people, but when the movie actually ended, it was only two girls and a guy. I was seriously close to giving him a surprise punch and beating his ass as he was walking down the stairs.

This is the #1 reason I don’t like going out to movies. Sorry you had to deal with that.

As someone who had been waiting for this movie for 10+ years, I have to say it didn’t let me down at all. I can’t wait for the DVD.

I liked the movie quite a bit, but I did have two complaints - it would have been quite hard to follow without having read the book, and I disliked the depiction of Manhattan’s omniscience.

I could be projecting personal philosophy too much into the character, but it seemed to me that in the book his discussion with Jupiter on Mars was an exploration of causal determinism, which isn’t really expressed through the use of disjointed flashbacks.

i totally sympathize. the second time i saw it with my mom why were there two guys sitting behind us loudly sniffing coke and issuing loud commentary during action and romance sequences?! it was a little odd is all i’m saying.

You know those two guys sitting behind you sniffing coke and commenting on the movie? They were the producers.

It’s the first time it’s happened for me. Audiences are usually quite good in Australia - is it a common occurrence in the US?

The one difference I noticed this time was that it was a predominantly teen audience at the time I was watching.

This is what I wanted to say to them:

If you’re going to pay for a ticket to watch a movie, you WATCH the movie. If you wanted to have a conversation unrelated to the movie, then you should do it OUTSIDE the theater- why even go into the cinema in the first place if you want to talk? And, if you want to talk to your companion next to you, you do it in a discreet whisper, so as not to disturb those around you. They have paid for their tickets and would like to enjoy their experience without having to listen to any of your inane conversation. It’s called consideration for others.

Of course, that’s a full lecture, where perhaps a simple “Shut the hell up” would have sufficed.

You sniff that over there?

I still can’t over that Rorschach was played by Kelly from the Bad News Bears.

It’s a great high, man.

Movie was kind of interesting, had its moments, but was far from great, story was weak, I don’t know why there are so many watchmen fanboys out there, maybe people should read more books and less comics.

Have you read the book?

Honestly, while the movie hit the highlights pretty well (I guess…) it left out TONS of story and changed a few things. It was basically a “good shot” at getting the book, but really missed the mark in my opinion.
