The Watchmen Discussion Thread

I felt that they did a great job adapting the comic visually, excellent attention to detail on a superficial level, but they did an absolutely miserable job capturing the metaphors, philosophy, ideas and subtleties that the comic exceeded at.

Most of the acting was terrible, save for Rorshach and Comedian. Dr. Manhattan was OKAY but he sounded like such a pussy. He didn’t sound apathetic and inhuman, he sounded sensitive and tired.

Ultimately I was very disappointed. I have a feeling that the DVD will be a lot better though. I’ve heard it’s going to be quite long.

Malevolence nailed it. Visually, the movie was great, and there were parts that I really enjoyed; but, the substance really wasn’t there and the acting was sub-par for the most part. I left kind of disappointed, to be honest.

Has this come out in the USA yet?

I think the end definitely justified the means…but the means still could’ve been better, if that makes any sense. Gimme a break, I just got done sitting in a dark room for 3 hours.

The soundtrack killed me. 99 Luft Balloons and Hallelujah? At least All Along the Watchtower was included.

Saw it at midnight, loved it but my friends hated it because they’ve never cracked a fucking book before.

I really can’t see what Alan Moore might have to complain about, because this has to be one of the most faithful adaptions ever put on screen.

Opening credits were awesome

I’ve been thinking about this more. Just a few more thoughts: I really liked the way they played “Unforgettable” by NKC in the Comedian-death scene. It’s one of those things, that as reading the book prior, makes you appreciate the way they did a lot more. Almost gave it a bit of a ‘bittersweet’-feel, if you will.

Also… I’ve got to say the thing that bugged me the most was Veidt’s casting character. As someone else mentioned, for one, he was a twig. Plus, in the book Adriann seemed to be much more noble and dignified. Right from the get-go in the movie, they just made him seem like a melancholy and disconnected ass. I don’t know, I just wasn’t digging the way they adopted his character.

Great movie, great soundtrack. I was really scared they would mess up the movie big time but damn. Although I think I could have done without seeing Dr. Manhattans penis in every other scene.

I generally don’t care for comic book movies, but this was great. They did a hell of a job covering everyone’s backstories. Two thumbs up.

I’m probably the only person who thinks this, but the major plot change from the comics actually seemed like an improvement. The Giant Squid monster felt slightly hokey when I read it, and in the movie setting it would’ve been totally retarded. I actually preferred the new ending of framing Doc. Manhattan for the attacks.

Spoilers by the way.

I wonder how that Dr. Manhattan trains?

He trained in the super-duper cool world of CGI…apparently it’s better than steroids!!

I wont say why I thought this,as I dont want to ruin anything for anyone, but I was kind of disappointed

it may have done a good job of covering the book(which i don’t think it did)

but from a movie standpoint it fucking sucked massive amounts of ass.

I was deeply disappointing.

Okay first off… the comic was written in a way to represent a movie… yes so the adaptation to a movie by snyder should be almost perfect, if done correctly (havent seen it yet). Also the setting is during the cold war era, when Regan was president, and so a lot of retards might not understand it if its not set in modern times… just my 2 cents…

What? Did you even read the book? By saying that, I really doubt you did.

Or you’re fucking retarded.

It practically COULDN’T have followed the book any more closely, sans a few minute details.

Man, I really thought this thread was going to have some better discussion. Where’s everyone else at?

It’s cool that you mentioned that, because I felt through the movie they were trying to pinpoint a certain audience through songs. They were really trying to make the soundtrack brilliant, so hard. Including Leonard Cohen for one thing, and Dylan and everything they did. They were pandering this movie to the hardcore music lovers, that were likely to judge this movie harshly. Trying to placate the smart crowd with music. It nearly worked. If only there was a good plot. Everything about this movie was good… but not the plot. It sucked.

Sorry.

SPOILERS (Guy I’m quoting didn’t use them properly…)

I was thinking the same thing until… think about it: Ozymandias’s true character in the comic book did this to have both sides unite against an enemy that doesn’t exist. Sure, he killed millions of people - but it was for a cause that probably was justified. Plus, at the end of the movie, they left out the classic line where Veidt actually questioned himself, and was left with no answer. “I did the right thing, didn’t I?..” Big mistake leaving that out.

I think the movie was too focused on making Adrian seem like a ‘bad’ character that, by using the new ending, it took away any sort of real credibility he had. He DIDN’T set up his long-time friend and have everyone unite against him. I don’t think it made as much sense for the two countries to become allies simple in response do Dr. Manhattan’s alleged attacks. I still thought the movie was great, but the carelessness of the Ozzymandias character and how they set up his motives is the one big thing that’s still bothering me.

I’m seeing it in about 2 hours. I’ve been avoiding the thread until I actually watch the movie.
