The Tactical Life

Thought for the day:

My thoughts this morning are with all the first responders and victims of Hurricane Ian. Godspeed.

The overarching tactical principles for stateside law enforcement and military operations are identical, the techniques that are legal or applicable will vary from slightly to significantly.

Three requirements to effectively fight-
Stability
Mobility
Situational awareness

Ambush - a surprise attack by people lying in wait in a concealed position or an attack executed suddenly and without warning on an unsuspecting victim

Attack - an aggressive action against a person or place with weapons or armed force

An ambush by design is intended to deny the victim any ability to resist the surprise attack. Think of it as a sucker punch with a gun, there is no counter other than the ambush is poorly laid and so it fails. A poorly laid ambush will allow the victim of the ambush to evade. If an ambush is executed properly, you do not win or counter it successfully.

If you are inside a vehicle and ambushed, you have been denied mobility and situational awareness, two of the three things that you need to successfully fight. When this happens, a dedicated attacker will be able to dominate his victim and overwhelm them in such a short period of time as to make it virtually impossible to resist.

Training is practice done for repeatable and successful on demand performance, in a designated situation. We must be realistic about what we train on and how we allocate our limited training time and resources.

Thought for the day:

“If ambushed within a vehicle, that assailant has limited your mobility and situational awareness while maintaining all of theirs. The start signal is multiple bullets coming through either your windshield or side windows. Because you are in a confined space, you have literally no place to go and so that makes the ambush all that much more likely to succeed. Nobody wants to face that harsh truth but it is in fact the truth.”

Thought for the day:

"The cartel gunmen come, they take the livestock, they screw your wife and daughter, and you do nothing," the Rev. Alfredo Gallegos said in a sermon. “Well, get yourself a gun, the government can go to hell.”

“We have to defend our lives,” Gallegos continued.

While on campus helping to teach an active shooter class, I was able to try something entirely new. Talk about being a fish out of water:

Fencing has been included in every Olympics since 1898

President Theodor Roosevelt and Winston Churchill both fenced

Fencing as a game goes back as early as 1200A.D.

Fencing is known for being the only combat sport with no weight classes

Violence doesn’t care what martial art we study.

When an attack happens, it happens fast.

Violence loves speed.

Be ready.

From yesterday:

Driving on a major interstate, two assholes in front of me started shooting at each other in a road rage incident. I don’t know where you live, but, road rage shootings are common here. The vast majority of the victims are innocents caught in the crossfire and there seem to be a high majority of children injured .Fucking assholes.

Here is some tactical advise for you assholes, read how its done and know that you are just not good enough. All you are good for is hurting some bystander.

Shooting out from within a vehicle and expecting a positive effect at any distance is a fool‘s errand. You can do all the ballistic demonstration‘s you want and it will show you that fighting from the front seat and shooting out through the windshield is an in-extremis hail Mary move to try and buy time and get out of the car. At that point, you were banking more on luck than anything else.

What did you do after the shots broke out?

Do you pull over and let them roll on, or try to drive away from them?

Both cars were near and exit and one split off. I was in an unmarked fed vehicle, so, could not do a traffic stop. I called the locals, relayed the tag number and a state trooper was in the area. He passed me and pulled over the perp. I backed him up until his back up arrived. The perp was placed in custody and vehicle search turned up three weapons. The driver was a convicted felon, placed under arrest.
