The Stupid Thread 2 (Part 2)

I think to make up your mind if this is good or bad for the USA, you need to take the name Trump out of it because that has too many connotations.

A state DA, judge and jury in a state, that is the most anti the defendant in the country who is the former president of the country, just convicted the front runner for one of the two major political parties in the USA that is simultaneously the leader in the polls and most likely person to be voted president in this year’s election for a secondary crime to a federal crime that was not tried at the federal level before, involving a new legal theory to convict him on falsifying business records.

In my opinion, and I’m a European, I believe this does not sound like a good thing for the USA. I would really hold off celebrating trying to put the candidate for POTUS of the other party in jail for the election based on rather shaky grounds and in any case a small non violent crime. If anyone believes this is a good thing for the US, id really urge them to reflect what type of consequences such action could have. If democrats want to have another civil war in the US, this is the way to do it in my opinion. I am sure many republicans (~40% of the electorate) feel that democrats try to take away their voice in the election and if you don’t have a voice in a democracy, why are you participating in that at all?

Before this trial, there was a basic agreement between the parties and in the US, that presidential candidates and former presidents would not be prosecuted (for example Hillary, Obama, Biden weren’t) and that the voters will answer these questions at the ballot box, this has been ended now. Is that a good thing?

Add to that that the current president is the head of the executive branch and has been let off the hook for a crime which his own DOJ and special counsel wrote in their dossier he clearly committed (the classified documents during the time he was out of office and VP) and in addition was not tried for a crime that is potentially much more serious and involves high level corruption.

Therefore, even without going into details about the case, is that something you want in your country? I don’t want that in mine. We have problems here, but that goes way further than anything I’ve seen. I believe if you try to put a presidential candidate in jail especially right before the election, the crime must be very serious and the grounds on which the trial is based must be extraordinarily strong. I believe neither is the case here.

I didn’t move to the US until I was 12, but was in an Army family, so I appreciate the perspective of an outsider looking in to analyze America.

It’s an informal Department of Justice policy that a sitting president should fully focus on their duties instead of worrying about prosecution. But afterwards they are a private citizen, and have no such policy.

I’d actually like to see a law put in place that any statute of limitations pauses for the president while they are in office to avoid running out the clock. I want them to think about what they are doing and not be elite.

And I think a 6 year single term presidency makes more sense so it’s not all about reelection, but actually doing stuff.

Sure. I think politicians should be held to a higher standard. If we trust them to make decisions we should have complete transparency. They volunteered to be servants of the people. I’d like to see them have to liquidate their assets and put it into a mutual fund on election or something to tie their futures to how well the country is run.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

I understand Trump Derangement Syndrome a LOT more than I understand the short sighted morons that are defending this blatant abuse of the justice system for political purposes.

I was doing some reading and came across this.

"The statute of limitations for misdemeanor business records falsification is two years. For felonies, it’s five. But the clock stops if the defendant is “continuously out of the state.”

So by moving his home from NY to Florida for tax and political reasons, Trump prolonged the statute."

What is your source?

as i went to NY statute of limitations and found nothing about being out of state

Quora. So not a direct source.

Also a question of what does “continuously” mean? Trump didn’t actively avoid New York as far as I know and still was there regularly even if he wasn’t a resident.

I don’t know. I’m just learning and reading. Smarter people than me would be better.

Two non Trump supporters’ view on the case; …Chris Cuomo -yes, I know…but now that he’s no longer a CNN puppet, his perspectives are still pretty much establishment, but now much more rational: (1st 5 minutes will suffice)

Here’s the requested constitutional scholar, smart person, and also Biden voter in 2020. Ultra self-aggrandizing individual, but the credentials are indisputable.

Since I can’t have carbs, I was staring longingly at some instant oatmeal in the pantry, when my wife came down and asked why I’m taking so long to come to bed.

My dumbass kept stairing at the oatmeal and the first words that came out of my mouth without thinking were “Fear is the mind killer.”

I read them all in a short period of time several years ago so they are all blurred together. Love Serge and Coleman.

Weather finally turned nice around here. Now everybody who bought an ebike over the winter has decided to try bike commuting and they are just dangers to everyone and themselves. Adults who obviously haven’t ridden much since childhood are now blasting around on 80lb bikes with shitty brakes, shitty bike handling skills and zero experience being on a bike around motor vehicle traffic. It’s just silly season out there.

I feel like being an idiot today

I bought a copy of the one ring from LOTR.

Stupid.

I will be wearing it out in public, but the question for the council is which finger it should be on?

Also stupid.

I’m going right forefinger, but am open to suggestions.

Sauron agrees that right forefinger is the answer. Go forth and conquer!
