For some engineers who are involved in actually building physical stuff in the real world (cough cough-cough) and not apps for illegal hotels/taxis/hooking up/whatever it is a great chance to scream at loved ones “Oh, NOW you want to know about metals, different corrosion rates, zinc anodes and non-destructive testing? NOW? AND ONLY TWO MONTHS AGO YOU CONFIDENTLY CLAIMED THAT DAD’S JOB IS SOOO BOOORING?”
During our evening walk with the dogs, I was trying to explain the magnitude of pressure being that far under water. It is like 12,000 ft down, that means it is around 360 ATM of pressure. I was trying to explain the magnitude by comparing it to a space shuttle in space (a pressure differential of 1 ATM). This was 360X that pressure differential. People know a breach in a space shuttle is a big deal. Understanding this is 360X that I thought would be kinda mind blowing to her. She didn’t really care.
Outside of those of us nerds deeply entrenched in this stuff, I have found most people don’t care all that much or don’t have the ability to understand how much pressure 360 atms (>5000 psi) actually is.
My wife told me that she found at an F-16 can fly for almost 40 hours straight (with aerial refueling) and it kind of blew her mind.
Yeah. He wasn’t unharmed though. Severe bruising and pinhole like injuries to the entire face, eyes were fortunately closed- but they were soaked with hydraulic oil and needed to be thoroughly rinsed clean too.
Weird follow up question - did his face heal or was he pretty messed up?
The stuff that can wrong on work sites is crazy. I think when I was 15 or 16 I was about 20 feet from a guy using a chop saw to cut something, and the blade exploded. I was shirtless (it was a pretty informal job) and could feel the fragments hit my entire chest. Didn’t really cause any serious injuries, but if they’d hit my eyes or something I’m sure it would’ve been a different story.
Pretty much. It took a good while for the bruising and swelling to go down, and the pin hole like things to go away. The real risk there is injection injury and damage if that oil is carried to the lungs. Basically suffocating from the inside out.
Yeah, definitely. Chop saw guy was pretty fortunate.
As many times as I’ve used them, I’m still warry of cutting metals with carbide blades. I always get a twinge of fear that it will just frag the crap out of me.
I never got why many people need a fictional character to share their physical traits to be relatable, so I’m pretty neutral here. I’m also sorta confused since EDS is so rare and almost no one outside of medical professionals has heard about it. There seems to be a million versions of Spiderman now, though, so why not add one more to the pile.
Should mention sun spider is also a lesbian… because of course she is!
Dammit. And they had to make her super pretty to rub salt in the wound haha.
How’s the exercise program going? I’m spiderman!
Haha. I’m back in the PT office with my main goal being to get fully functional and pain-free by my 30th bday (so next June). After a long evaulation, my PT said my last remaining issue is my left hip, which caused postural changes that are basically fucking my left scapula (but also everything else). I did a band row before and after he worked on the left hip and my ROM basically doubled afterward, so that was all the proof I needed.
He told me to keep my training “light and easy” and avoid the lower body for a while. So training has been super boring and uneventful. Going with “light and easy,” my short-term goal is doing Wendler’s bare minimum goals for bodyweight assistance with the 20% bodyweight weighted vest challenge.
So 100 push ups, 75 dips, 50 chins, and 50 hanging leg raises in 10 minutes each with the vest for the first three. Only gonna count it if it’s super easy, cuz at least that way it’s more fun (and makes the push up goal somewhat meaningful). For lower body just to preserve strength I’ll lunge or super stiff leg RDL my DBs from the floor when doing shrugs for the first rep. When I can run, I’ll also add Wendler’s minimum of being able to do an easy mile run (the way he describes a run is like 70% full speed, I think) anytime. I’m actually really liking Wendler’s ideas of focusing on minimums and “building a base”. It honestly reminds me of PT work haha.
It’s also just about the worst superpower you could give a superhero.
How close to meeting this goal are you? I like your style of thinking here, set gradual (albeit) obtainable targets as opposed for instantaneously shooting for the stars.
A number of the commentors are saying it was taken down. Idk, seems plausible enough to me based on how absurd society is right now, but could be fake.
