The Stupid Thread 2 (Part 1)

You’re right, it said:

We’ve also been intentional with buying her dolls and toys of color. Black is always the preference, but we’ve made exceptions. (Her Moana blanket is still a favorite.) White dolls, though? We haven’t officially banned them. There is no sign on our stoop saying “No Dogs or Malibu Barbies.” But if we’re at a store, and the only dolls for sale are White, we’ll just be leaving doll-less that night.

All I did was change the colors.

Why are they garbage? I understand why people want to pretend that they are garbage because they are so damning to the woke movement, but what about them is actually unsound?

People get offended by them in order to not have to respond to them logically, but there isn’t a logical refutation as far as I can tell.

I agree, but it is perceived as white people complaining about stuff that disproportionately affects them, and when arguing against someone who frankly doesn’t give a damn about white people problems - it is no basis for an argument.

They are good refutations in my book, but ineffective in generating dialogue with folks in disagreement. This plays into cognitive dissonance, but it is much harder to convince someone they have this - so avoiding these types of arguments tends to be a better practice.

The parents are throwing the white doll away because they fear for the self esteem of their child. Doesn’t mean what they’re doing is right.

Not really sure why you switched the colors cause there’s no context since it’s essentially made-up by you. You can’t compare a made up scenario to something that happened.

Case and point.

I’m out @tlgains

Okay

The only reason I didn’t start a Klu Klux Klan chapter in my kindergarten class was because my parents let me play with this awesome Lando Calrissian doll, I mean action figure, in his Jabba’s Palace undercover regalia.

If you weren’t staging airstrikes using Styrofoam and gasoline on little trenches full of green army men, you aint really 'merican. :triumph:

@Andrewgen_Receptors had context… He was showing the hypocrisy if the roles were reversed. BUT…

Here is an example of someone having to defend their family because the kid sister wasn’t happy with a black doll.

Weird how a white child being unhappy with a black doll is racist but black ADULTS being unhappy with a white doll is understandable…

It’s only weird if you don’t realize Progressives see black adults as being less advanced/developed/mature than a white child.

Those are different situations

I don’t think it is weird that someone would prefer to buy their daughter dolls that look like her. What is off is that someone would write an article about it and the washington post would publish it. The article IMO was racist against black people as well, with broken English “how do we ‘disappear’ it” used in the title making the author look uneducated (along with how petty the author appeared).

Another weird thing to me is that it is made out like it is some giant conspiracy theory that beauty standards are Eurocentric. Is there any proof to that at all?

He was showing a potential or hypothetical hypocrisy.

Neither do I, but I won’t refuse to buy a non-white doll for my daughter either. I’ve got a 5 year old girl an a rainbow of dolls - yes including Tiana and Moana.

In the author’s brain? Yes. In reality? No. You don’t see people saying “White is beautiful” but the term “Black is beautiful” is commonplace… just saying.

Outside of the US you do. In many non-white countries, there is strong preference for light skin.

I just don’t think the whites have some conspiracy going on to make themselves the most beautiful. If they do, I’ve been left out of the loop.

I just think it is like women preferring tall guys. It sucks if your not that, but the tall guys don’t have a secret organization going on to promote the attractiveness of tall guys. It is just something lots of people prefer, and I don’t think by using a bunch of short male actors or something that preference is going to change.

As if little girls look like barbie dolls. Also, in the past, how many white girls with dark hair or red hair could only choose dolls with blond hair and blue eyes?

What I see are overbearing parents who want to control their children’s minds. Let the kid pick whatever doll she wants. It’s all make believe.

But the parents’ racism isn’t.

Their outrage is.

My almost 2 year old daughter is HUGELY into dolls and Barbies already. She has picked a smattering of colors and ethnicities. I just let her pick whatever she wants.

Children don’t see skin color. Adults are the ones fucking everything up.

I guess what came to my mind is something like buying your niece a birthday gift. She is white. You go to the store, you see there is a white and a black barbie to choose from. Is there really no thought that goes into which one you pick? Most people are going to buy the doll that matches the kids skin the closest.

Maybe the kid loves Moana. Then I would buy that, since that is what I know she wants. Maybe she is obsessed with Elsa, then I would buy that.
