It would depend. If you know the kid has a bunch of white barbies you could buy the black one so she has something different. Or you buy one that matches what she already has. Or, you ask her what she would like. I wouldn’t buy a barbie doll for a child if I didn’t already know she likes them.
Also, it just isn’t skin color. Maybe you buy a white doll but not because it’s white but because it’s a redhead just like the girl.

I think it is good that they make dolls that are all different types.
I was friends with a kid in middle school that was from Africa (west side), and he told me that his mom and sisters used “whitening creams”. I was kinda surprised by that.

And here we got white people going into tanning booths to get darker. It’s almost like people do things for the sole purpose of vanity

That case doesn’t exist because it’s racist and they would get chewed up for it. That is the point.
To support that point we have an article where a white child (who is held to less standards than an adult) is called racist for not liking a black doll.
And we have those people being attacked for trying to appropriate the culture and black fishing

I don’t think it’s a conspiracy theory, and I have no proof it exists, but I 100% think a lot of peoples’ beauty standards are Eurocentric. Not everyone, and I think what we’re seeing from dolls, models, etc. is changing over time, but for sure. I remember reading that the Comanche chief Quanah Parker was found very handsome by white people, but his mother was white, so he had Native coloring and a European build/features. The average Comanche build/face was not as attractive to whites. I don’t think it’s necessarily something to get upset about, but I don’t find the idea that the dominant group in a society forms the ideas of what beauty is (and the fact that it’s often in their favor) very hard to believe. I’ve met lots of people from “darker” countries where lighter skin is desirable. In America we’re just vain enough to want to get fake tans (usually at the expense of our skin’s health, haha) + black culture is so prominent.
I think you are right, but I think the reasons for it are just capitalism in general. Companies put the people they think will make them the most money in things like movies, and advertisements. The fact that a lot of the places were movies are made, and products are sold have historically been white I think has something to do with it.
Many countries (that weren’t white, or had much or any exposure to white people) have had preferences for light skin well before movies and advertisements were around though. I am not sure if there is a consistent thing behind that though. I know in some places light skin was a sign of being higher class (not working outdoors), but I don’t think that covers all those areas.
There are some things humans tend to find attractive though. I am not sure if the light skin is all a cultural thing or if there is some evolutionary reasoning? Perhaps it is not the skin color, but other attributes of white skin? Generally white people are fairly tall on average, could a trait like that which is generally preferred be lumped in with the preference? I think that is likely a part of it. I have heard in some Asian / Central or South American countries that white guys are swarmed by the local girls. I am not sure if it is the white skin though, it could just be that they are taller, assumed to have money, ticket to the US, etc…
A very close friend of mine spent 5 years in China teaching English / Mandarin.
He dated a few Chinese women long term there and all of their parents wanted their girls to have children with a white man because they liked how the babies looked…
They were also extremely racist to black people. But, they don’t really recognize racism in that way there from what he told me. It just is what it is and deal with it.

That lines up with what I’ve heard.
A relative has taught all over Africa and in Venezuela. Similar experiences, and attitudes from the locals.
Asians are some of the most racist people I know, haha. Not all, but I’ve met some very racist ones.
