The type that pretty much says: “George Floyd? Never heard of ‘im.” to get on the jury.
Because he secretly sympathizes with a pedophile?
Most likely.

Now, I do believe that “teaching to pass the test” is the wrong way to go about learning/education. But, educators need someway to judge if the student has learned enough to go out in the world and at the very least not be a burden on the rest of society.
Proficiency is a concept of white superiority.
From the article " He also said that the new standards for graduation will help benefit the state’s “Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”
I’m pretty sure there weren’t a ton of Asian students sweating passing a MINIMUM proficiency test.
Only a politician could come up with that inane idea.
It says it even eliminates the “portfolio of work” to show proficiency, which means that even those who “don’t test well” can still get credit. It boggles my mind that our education systems are purposefully producing society members that cannot contribute to the good of said society.
What’s the point of education? It’s clearly not to teach people how to think anymore.
It shouldn’t.
I still sometimes hold on to the naive notion that most people would want to push society forward.
My grasp is slipping…
Charles Boyle, the deputy communications director from Brown’s office, told the paper in an email that staff from the governor’s office informed legislative staffers about the bill’s signing on the day it was passed. He also said that the new standards for graduation will help benefit the state’s “Black, Latino, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Tribal, and students of color.”
Only a white person would have the audacity to say this about other groups, thinking they are open minded and progressive. And guess what? Charles Boyle is white. This is some white man’s burden kind of thinking. These people are saying what the KKK was saying decades ago.
Also, it’s freaking high school. Do you really need to test for proficiency at graduation? I think that’s a little late. If an 18 year old can’t read, what are you going to do? Have him start over in 1st grade?
It’s all bs in the end. It’s just a way to have good graduation numbers and appear as though you’re doing a good job. These people want to look like they are caring and invested in these kids’ lives but it’s just a conveyor belt. They gave up on teaching certain kids and just want to get them out the door without any problems. What happens next in their lives is not their concern.
We want consumers and prisoners, not thinkers.
But wait…how can he criticize that being a person of color?
This is what happens when white privilege and black experience intersect.
There’s an equation: white privilege + black experience = Uncle Tom.
Most people want to push themselves forward in society.
Push society forward in which ways?
Better education for all (the bill above does the opposite by lowering standards), people could stop being dicks to one another (I know this is a pipe dream but hey) etc…
Sagan was quoted as saying 95% of people don’t understand science in the slightest. I think that needs to change.
I doubt any of this will ever happen as those in power inherently need a lower class to control and use as cheap labor. Every country has some semblance of a caste system, it’s just not called that.
This is what happens when success is solely defined by metrics.
I’m honestly unsure of the argument in favor of the bill. I’m sure their is one, but it isnt obvious to me… What constitutes a better education and where do you pull funding from to make it happen? the police? ![]()
Science will show us the way. But most folks on both sides of the political spectrum thumb their noses at it… combined with a healthy dose of dunning-kruger we get covid deniers, antivaxers, creationists, and people arguing you can choose your biological sex. Fun times.
Cheap labor will always be needed. Plenty of dumbass/lazy people out there produced by past and current educational standards. Not sure the weirdest state in the union revising educational standards downwards will result in a significant shift in educational outcome.
I think this goes back to the lack of understanding of science. There is the stereotype of the eccentric scientist for good reason, a lot of times it takes what today is deemed a “nuerodiverse” brain to understand some of the concepts.
Also, oddly enough given my field, I believe in creation as a Christian just not in the whole “young earth” theory (never mind those who say the Bible states the earth is flat - spoiler: it doesn’t). There is a pervasive thought among many Christians that science and religion cannot coexist and I find that off putting. We have other threads for that argument though.
I wrote a long rant against people in general and certain demographics specifically. Instead, ill just say there are plenty of ways for a god to coexist with science, and especially beginning of universe science. But deferring to the bible when commonly accepted science contradicts it, is fucking stupid.
