The Shaving Cream Racket

Time and the risk of injury forced me into the use of Electric razors, but you have to spend a bit and get a decnet Philips or something. You can shave whilst watching TV to same time !

By the way don’t use the 'lectric on your balls, like that badger Mick shaves with, it’ll bite.

I tried the baby oil. Good shave. As close, if not closer, as shaving cream. I did feel more “pulling” on the hairs. I guess that’s part of the secret of getting a close shave - draw the hair out of the follicle to get a closer cut.

I agree. There’s also probably some numbing agent in the cream/foam. Maybe. I feel my face a lot more than before, and not just after shaving.
what the fuck kind of cream are you shaving with ?

electric razor, problem solved.

WRT Numbing, here’s a quote from the author:

“The problem is this. Shaving cream does something evil to the skin. It somehow weakens the pores and makes the top layer mushy and unresponsive.”

As for the pic, what can I say … LMAO!

Some of the shaving routines remind me of American Psycho.

“Sure, but first, i will have to get ready by applying a deep poor cleanser lotion, and then a water activated gel cleanser then a honey almond body scrub, then an exfoliating gel scrub. Then i’ll apply an herb mint facial mask, but none of this includes alcohol…because alchohol dries your skin out, and makes you look older”
I’m Batman.

wtf does this mean ? unresponsive ? like botox ? shaving cream makes you look like axl rose ? so far my experience says that running a blade across a foamless face is far more evil. don’t forget rambo.

WRT “numbing,” MrChill is not completely nuts. If shaving cream has “menthol” or something like that in it, the menthol will irritate the skin, and that irritation will mask the discomfort of shaving. Anyone ever use Tiger Balm for sore muscles?

That stuff has capsaicin in it, which is the same chemical that gives jalapeno peppers their “bite.” The capsaicin irritates the skin causing a tingly, warm sensation. This sensation helps to mask the pain of the sore muscle so it feels like your pain has been relieved. Same principle.

Hell, if you really want to relieve muscle soreness, rub some Tiger Balm on the sore area, then forget to wash the stuff off your hands and go take a whiz. You won’t even notice the muscle soreness after this, guaranteed.

Well, I tried it, water only.

I’m used to using some incredible shaving cream from the Body Shop - they have awesome shaving products, btw, including an aftershave lotion that isn’t alcohol - it’s nice moisturizer with a scent that drives womenfolk mad.

I honestly don’t think I’m getting as close without the cream, and my stubble feels even rougher than usual after a few hours - and I’m a hairy bastard… you could sand a block of wood with my 5 o’clock shadow… so rougher stubble, not so good. other thing is that I’ve noticed a little irritation around my neck, but other than that it wasn’t uncomfortable. Timewise, it took the same ammount of time if not longer, because I had to keep going over each area multiple times to get it all, and it’s harder to see where has and hasn’t been shaved. I also seem to have a few more zits than the norm, I suspect that’s because the shaving cream cleanses your face as well as keeping moisture in place to lubricate the shave.

Don’t know if I’m sold or not - I hate shaving in any case, and only do it twice a week or so, and I usually have some form of facial hair.

I’ve had tiger balm on my cocknballs before… fun, then not so fun, then kinda fun again, then REALLY not so fun, then… kinda fun again.

all in all wouldn’t reccomend it.

I guess they’re nuts too:

 1. Stay away from products that contain numbing agents such as Benzocaine or Menthol as these will tighten pores and stiffen beard.

Another bunch of nutsos - Mayo Clinic:

http://www.cnn.com/HEALTH/library/PN/00041.html

Counterirritants

Menthol, wintergreen oil, others. Substances such as menthol, wintergreen oil, eucalyptus oil, or turpentine cause cool or hot sensations that can temporarily relieve or cover up pain. These compounds are included in over-the-counter products such as Ben-Gay and Icy Hot.

Knewsom’s above post very much my final impression after almost a week without cream. Skin is probably less ‘mushy’ and therefore harder shave in certain spots, which would explain in part the 7/10 overall rating. I had no fog free mirror, so shaving 3-feet away from the closest mirror is not the most user-friendly or precise thing. I’ll keep trying, with a better blade.

After reading this thread I tried shaving sans cream after a shower. I’ve done it twice now with no discomfort at all, and no burning or razor bumps the next day. Thanks for the enlightenment.

didn’t shave saturday or sunday. today’s beard was obviously longer so it held lots of water, which is a good thing, and it came off like butter.

i rate today’s shave 9/10.

pretty damn comfortable too, except for the skin being so grippy w/o soap to add some slip. i’m also quite pleased that i’ve saved 9 cents this week not using shave cream.

i have to say a huge improvement over times 1 and 2, but then again a 3 day beard counts for alot. the real test is yet to come though: daily shaves…

Having a tough beard I’m always looking for ways to get a closer shave. I’ve tried shaving oil before (king of shaves makes one) and it worked well but it was pricey and a small bottle is around $5. Over the weekend I bought a large bottle of baby oil for $2 and used that instead of the shaving cream. Had an awesome shave. I also like to use conditioner too. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it off before applying the oil. Does a great job of softening up the hairs.

yesterday’s shave, which i rated 9 out of 10 i’d like to amend to a solid 10. the reason being it lasted so long. in fact, it wasn’t until this morning that i had the “5 o’clock shadow”.

today’s shave i was worried about because it was already so short…just had to keep adding water. it’s still a little slower but even today i got an awesome shave. alittle bit of rash down on the neck but very smooth. i was really sceptical about this. so far the results are stellar.

wtf ?

here’s a pic of jeffrey tucker, author of the article that started this whole thread.

don’t y’all feel like a clean shaven p.r. pic would be the least he could do ?

jeez-s !

Just found this

Is this where shaving is leading us?

Yup. Me too. And I only shave it a couple of times a week (I work from home mostly).

Like X, I use soap everywhere else - every day in my case. Works great.

The Mach 3 is our best invention - methinks.
