Man, I wouldn’t go that far lol…
I have no interest in those comic-book-come-to-life movies. Too damn old, I guess.
I call flame free! No backsies!
I’ve never read a single comic in my life lol.
I watched the earlier movies just for the humor and CGI spectacles. I never really cared for the characters and plots(except for Guardians. Guardians was great).
Winter Soldier by The Russo Brothers was the one that made me feel like I was watching a “real” movie. Then they followed up with Civil War. And now Infinity War sets the bar so high I don’t know how they’re going to surpass it.
I suggest at least watching Winter Soldier to get an idea of how these films have evolved. Prior comic book knowledge probably won’t be required.
Edit
X-men Days of Future Past was excellent too.
Thanks all the same, but I think I’ll stick with reruns of Murder, She Wrote.
Thanos made the film. His goals and his reasoning are suitably bonkers, but his backstory and his utter conviction in the righteousness of his goals made everything seem so personal to him.
And, ya, it’s refreshing to see a villain who is capable of backing up everything he says with action.
It helps that motion capture has come a long way, and Josh Brolin is freaking awesome with just his voice.
SPOILERS
What I really loved was the literal depiction of what he said he would do that would normally be hyperbole in a typical villain’s lines. Like snapping his fingers and watching the sunset at the end. Looks like Loki’s never coming back.
Went to see Infinity War last night. Utterly mind blowing.
Up there with T2 and The Matrix with regards to being definitive cinema experiences.
Yeah, man, and I gotta say The Russo Brothers really need more recognition for their efforts.
SPOILERS
When Thanos can hurl a FUCKING MOON at Ironman and you go, “Holy shit that’s fucking awesome!” instead of being taken out of the movie and thinking how completely ludicrous it is, that’s not a small feat to accomplish lol.
Also, I’m not sure whether you feel the same way as a HK movie fan, but I watched a lot of movies in the 90s just for Ching Siu Tong’s epic action choreography(Swordsman 2, The Heroic Trio and it’s sequel etc) up to the 2000s when Donnie Yen did SPL(I’m 90% sure the fucking knife fight influenced the one in Winter Soldier)… and The Russo Brothers just blew EVERYTHING away in 3 movies lol. The only thing they can’t touch IMO is the Once Upon a Time in China series and Iron Monkey because Tsui Hark is(was?) a fucking genius.
You, Me and Dupree was also great.
Considering watching it. I have a serious hard on for Kate Hudson.
Haha I wouldn’t go that far. I’ve yet to seen any Hollywood film match the brutality of 2 of the fight scenes in Pedicab Driver for example…
Btw I had to google SPL
I totally forgot about Simon Yam. Guy was a bad ass motherfucker.
Especially in Full Contact. One of the all time classic HK action films imo.
Omg, I actually watched Pedicab Driver in the cinema when it was released lol. I think it was the 3rd film I ever watched in the cinema. The first was Spooky, Spooky(Samo Hung). Yeah, I’m not comparing them to Samo Hung, Jackie Chan and gang’s stuff. Those were done with their own stunt teams really taking horrific falls and blows. I forgot they were still being made in the early 90s. Best fight I’ve ever seen was Jackie Chan vs that boxer in Wheels on Meals.
SPL was when the MMA style of fight choreography started in HK films because of Donnie Yen. Flashpoint, Special ID and Return of Chen Zhen(Fist of Fury remake) are worth checking out.
I loved him. The dude could play any kind of role and shine in it. Bullet in the Head, Naked Killer, PTU etc.
Full Contact is one of the most underrated Chow Yun Fatt movies IMO. Fucking brutal shit. And Carrie Ng was so hot… I think people just didn’t like Chow Yun Fatt in such morally ambiguous a role at the time.
EDIT
Wait Pedicab Driver was released in 1989. Shit I was 10 years old at the time lol.
@dt79 and @ChongLordUno
Recommend me some badass Hong Kong action films, please. Like, the absolute essential viewing.
I love those movies but don’t know very much about the genre.
Full Contact just oozes nothing but pure and utter sleaze.
The soundtrack, acting, script and violence. Everything is pure filth. I swear to god I have to take a bath every time I watch that movie.
There was a rumour going round years ago that Wyclef Jean was going to do a remake and play Yun-Fat’s role. Jesus wept.
Pedicab driver, when you come down to brass tacks, is a really poor, cheesy movie. The only saving grace being the fight scene with Lau Kar-leung and Sammo. That shit is just straight up intricacy. The last scene with the big buff motherfucker from Fist of Legend is bone-crunching.
Off the top of my head…
The Killer
Full Contact
The Magnificent Butcher
Ebola Syndrome
Drunken Master 3
Fist of Legend
Duel To The Death
Iron Monkey
Young Master
Prodigal Son
And there’s a very obscure Cat 3 number which is close to my heart, purely because I watched it on LSD at the time and I hit the giggles for the rest of the night…
Street Kids Violence
This movie is a VERY realistic depiction of youth street gangs at the time(of course lots things were exaggerated for the cinema). The characters, dialogue, the way they dressed and behaved were all spot on. I grew up in a similar environment.
Probably a few overlaps with @ChongLordUno’s list.
John Woo:
The Killer (Chow Yun Fatt)
A Better Tomorrow 1, 2 (Chow Yun Fatt)
Once A Thief (Chow Yun Fatt)
Bullet in the Head
Chow Yun Fatt was my fucking idol when I was a kid. He’s the guy in The Replacement Killers.
90s Kungfu:
Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2 (Jet Li)
Iron Monkey Tarantino jerks off to this one
Fong Sai Yuk 1, 2 (Jet Li)
The Blade
Category 3:
Ebola Syndrome You have to watch this one!
Gong Tau
Naked Killer
2000s Donnie Yen:
SPL
Flashpoint
Special ID
Kungfu Jungle
Jackie Chan:
Armour of God 2
CIA Story
Police Story 1, 2
Rumble in the Bronx
Project A
Gangsters:
Prince of Temple Street
Young and Dangerous 1, 3, 4, 5
Lee Rock 1, 2 This may be my favorite HK movie. It’s an entire movie split into 2 parts.
To be Number 1
Stephen Chow:
Kungfu Soccer
Kung Fu
Royal Tramp 1, 2
Johnnie To:
The Heroic Trio
Avenging Trio
A Hero Never Dies
Exiled
The Mission
Throw Down Probably my 2nd favorite HK movie
Horror Comedies
Mr Vampire 1, 4
Encounters with the Spooky Kind 1, 2 (Samo Hung) Samo Hung is the fat guy in Martial Law
Magic Cop
2000s:
Infernal Affairs 1, 2 Scorsese remade Part 1 into The Departed. I didn’t like the original very much. Part 2 far surpassed it and is one of the best HK movies ever made IMO
Old Shaw Brothers Stuff:
Vengeance
My Young Auntie (Lau Kar Leung)
One Arm Swordsman(The one starring Wang Yu)
Shaolin Temple
36 Chambers of Shaolin (Lau Kar Leung)
@ChongLordUno & @dt79 you guys are fucking brilliant! Thanks a bunch.
I’ve actually seen a few of those. I’ve seen all the Drunken Master movies, Iron Monkey, The Killer, Bullet in the Head, both Police Story movies, Rumble in the Bronx, Internal Affairs (didn’t know there was a sequel though) and 36 Chambers of Shaolin.
I’ve managed to completely fuck up my neck to the point where I’m pretty much bedridden, so tomorrow the plan is to lie in bed all day out of it on tramadol and get my HK on.
Thanks guys!
Watch Ebola Syndrome and laugh your ass off.
I’ll bump it to the top of the list!
He’s the bad guy.
What was good that he did?
