Just watched all 3 seasons of Hannibal. Gotta say Mads Mikkelsen was an incredibly good pick to play Hannibal Lecter. Top notch.
Seriously? LOL.
This reminds me of a Japanese cartoon which has a title I can’t remember and I’m sure I’m quoting it wrong. Or maybe I just made it up on a freezing winter night in a shitty hotel room somewhere in rural Jiangxi while watching Midnight Cowboy on HBO over a decade ago. Or was I watching reruns of Zatoichi? Can’t remember but whatever.
'A rabbit encountered a wolf. For some reason, the wolf didn’t eat the rabbit and they became friends. They played together, slept together, ate together etc.
Then one day, the wolf tells the rabbit, “Alright, NOW I’m going to eat you.”
The rabbit is shocked. It asks the wolf, “But…but why? We were the best of friends! We did all that shit together! There’s no lack of food around here!”
The wolf replies, “Because I’m a wolf and you’re a rabbit, you dumbass.”’
Wait, I think I was watching Zatoichi but I can’t remember which installment it was.
I always hear how great of a book it is .. I might have to read it soon
Tenet
I love so many things about this movie. The sheer audacity of the concept would have been enough to make me want to see it, but I knew less than nothing about it going in. Chris Nolan’s name was enough of a draw. And movies like this (and Memento, and Inception) are why. Nobody else in Hollywood has the gumption to ask for a few hundred million to make a movie as ambitious as this, or that demands this much from the viewer. As someone that can barely stomach most of the derivative horseshit that passes for a blockbuster these days, Tenet is like a shot of adrenaline right to the balls. I think I love the fact that it was made almost as much as I love the movie, because that fact gives me hope for the future of the film industry.
I will see this again in theaters, and I will rewatch it at least a half dozen times when it’s released on demand. It is that good, and there is that much to absorb and figure out.
That said, I had no idea WTF was going on for the first 15 minutes (OK, maybe the first hour), and a fair portion of the dialogue is nearly indiscernible (at least in IMAX). Sometimes it was because the music was too loud, and others it was because people were trying to deliver their lines through respirators or some other obstruction.
TL;DR: If you liked Inception, you will like this movie. You will be confused. Just go with it.
9/10 (might get revised to 10/10 when I see it again)
YES!
Mikkelsen did such a great job and the series were so good. I wish I didn’t dismiss it for so long. People like me were probably why the series were cancelled.
On the other hand, everyone I know that has finally gave it a chance has really liked it. Maybe Netflix goes for a 4th season?
They are already in talks for a 4th season with the same cast. I have seen ever movie Mikkelson has made - he does an amazing job. Check out ‘Polar’ if you get a chance.
I had no idea what was going on lol (ok I’m exaggerating a bit. It’s not possible to talk about the movie without giving anything away) but I completely agree with this. I also really appreciate the fact that Nolan isn’t being self-indulgent just for the sake of it.
Seriously? I’ve been waiting for this for years. This series had more balls than the last 3 Hannibal movies put together.
It has been on my watchlist for a while, might watch it this weekend.
Just watched You Get Me on Netflix and I thought the right thing to do is to come on here and report how bad it is. It did manage to hold my attention enough to watch the whole thing through but I’m not sure it that’s because I was holding out hope for a plot twist or because the two girls were beautiful (understatement).
Basically, the movie followed the most obvious, predictable, been-there-done-that plot format there is. They made no effort to come up with something original or throw in a twist. Making this movie would be analogous to a cook at Applebee’s just slapping the recipe together and serving you a hamburger.
This actually would have annoyed me so much more if I didn’t know it was a problem before I went and saw it. I had to just sit back and enjoy the movie for what it was.
Now I’m not trying to take anything away from this movie because it was a great movie and most of the movie could be understood through the dialogue that did come through and the visuals but being that it had to be a bit exposition heavy, you’d think he would have mixed the sounds better so the dialogue was more clear.
Anyway, I’d still highly recommend people to go see it if you like Nolan movies.
Did you also see it in IMAX? I’m curious if the same issues apply to the regular format as well.
It’s really strange to me how an issue like this is possible in a production this size. Didn’t anyone take the time to watch it in the theater first? Weren’t there any test audiences? Or was the decision made that the score (and resulting tone from it) was more important than the dialogue? I think this is the case, since it’s not the first time dialogue discernibility has been sacrificed for tone/mood/ambience in a Nolan film.
Subtitles will be super fucking helpful when I finally get to watch it at home.
I see a guy really trying to stretch his limits as a filmmaker. The ambition is admirable IMO.
Watched I’m thinking of ending things and it is a hate it or love it movie and I fell into the love it crowd.
This movie is super confusing and with long car ride scenes based solely around dialogue I can understand how some people would find it boring. If you’ve read the book or know what the movie is about it might make it less confusing but not at all less enjoyable.
I see it in regular format and the issue was there. I do agree it’s not the first time Nolan has done this so maybe it was done for the reasons you listed.
I’m looking forward to watching it again at home just so I can have subtitles on
I stand by my original assessment of the movie from when I watched it last year.
As I said - I enjoy mindless violent movies. But there’s a big difference between ‘entertaining’ and ‘good’. Mads is that dude, as per usual.
It was the same in my part of the world too. Luckily we have subtitles here for most movies.
I remember Johnny Knoxville’s death scene elevated it a bit for me lol.
Seriously, I get what they were going for in the movie. It was the execution that was lacking. Perhaps they were overreaching with a lack of budget or had a less than talented technical crew behind the scenes.
I’d totally watch a sequel with the same director.
The Eight Hundred (China 2020)
This is the real reason why Mulan flopped in China. They released THIS at the same:
How the fuck do you compete with this lol?
Ok, the movie wasn’t as good as the trailers but it’s still pretty damn entertaining.
I thought I was watching a mega-budget Korean war movie with Chinese characteristics(sorry couldn’t resist the Deng Xiaoping reference) coupled with a little bit of early 90’s Tsui Hark’s(HK) subtle cynicism.
I don’t even understand how it ever got made. It had a budget of 80 million USD, which would be almost the equivalent of the budget of INFINITY WAR if we’re going by the relative prices of production in China.
And this movie is about KMT(Kuomintang) soldiers defending a warehouse over a period of 5 days in Shanghai in 1937 during the Sino-Japanese War. The Nationalist Army, NOT THE CCP. The KMT did most of the fighting during WW2, then they eventually retreated and formed Taiwan after losing the civil war with the CCP in 1949.
The characters aren’t all tough-talking, country loving stereotypes you see in most propaganda movies. Theses are normal guys, mostly farmers, conscripted from their respective villages and forced to take up arms with seemingly little training, and half of them don’t know what the fuck they’re doing nor what they’re fighting for since this was just 3 months into the Sino-Japanese War. and there was no CNN or youtube during the time.
To top it off, they’re now placed in a Alamo-like situation that was more of a political move to sway international allies to their side than part of an overall defensive strategy. And right beside the war zone, separated by a river under The Suzhou Bridge, is The Shanghai International Settlement which was an extraterritorial zone owned by the Brits and Americans, which was ceded under the series of Unequal Treaties signed by the Qing government.
But no Westerner was vilified in this movie.
Life goes on as normal for both foreigners and Chinese alike there since the Japanese forces aren’t able to touch that area. So you have people going about their business and a vibrant nightlife while shit is blowing up on the other side of the river. They’re there to bear witness to the carnage.
When shit goes down, and it happens lots of times, it’s pure chaos and as much focus is placed on individual heroism as the ones who start hiding because they’re scared shitless but the movie makes no judgements on them. There’s even a deserter whom the the filmmakers refuse to vilify because he was clearly not supposed to placed in a infantry position.
Shit, there’s even a Michael Bay moment where the Chinese flag is being raised while soldiers are under heavy enemy fire and dropping like flies trying to keep it standing. It’s the flag now used by TAIWAN since China was still the ROC at the time.
Now, to be fair, The KMT was also pretty fucked up and Chiang Kai Shek, a Christian, was no saint himself. In fact, he was pretty much a tyrant with fascist tendencies who conducted substantial purges of commies prior to the war. The phrase “rather kill 1000 innocent people than let 1 commie fuckhead escape” was coined by him.
Which is why the CCP won mass support of the people. This is not a fabrication by the CCP. It was REALLY the case at the time. The CCP had perfected guerilla tactics but they wouldn’t have succeeded in defeating the KMT without the cooperation of the people. And do note that I’m only giving a very simplified account of shit that went down during that era.
But Taiwan turned out relatively fine despite a nice little commie massacre and almost 2 decades of martial law but, hey, politics and politicians suck. Some just suck less than others.
I’m sorry I’m writing so much crap but I’m just shocked that I watched a China movie that actually depicted stuff like this. Perhaps they could get away with it because all this stuff happened under the KMT. Or maybe the CCP is just getting less uptight when it comes to this shit since a couple of decades ago, the Red Guards desecrated the grave of the Lt Colonel who led the regiment depicted in this movie. They did flash a title card right at the end before the credits claiming the CCP later won the war but it’s pretty much expected and negligible at this point IMO.
As for the movie itself, it’s not bad. It’s not great either. The production quality is top notch but the plot structure is a mess and certain plot threads just go nowhere. The fight scenes are hit and miss. Some are truly horrifying like that scene in Dunkirk where the soldiers are stuck in enclosed space in the boat getting shot at like fish in a barrel from outside. Others are lackluster and would benefit from some basic knowledge of spatial perspective and geography when filming action scenes(It’s really not as complicated as it sounds. Just watch Die Hard or any other John McTiernan movie). And I’m not sure the filmmakers here know much about military tactics, much less how certain types of artillery work.
So, overall, I gotta be objective and give this a 6.5/10. But it had balls. Real balls.
Started watching new girl, it’s fantastic, hysterical… Somewhat reminds me of friends.
And yes, I’m a guy and I watch new girl.
