The Return of Even More Movies You've Watched This Week III

Mulan 2020

The wife wanted to watch this. I didn’t.

As a disclaimer, I’ve only caught bits and pieces of the cartoon over the years but I kinda know what it’s about. I, however, did read The Ballad of Mulan so the claim of this being a more realistic movie that sticks to the that version of the story is pure nonsense IMHO. No, seriously, it’s nonsense. It’s a Disney movie. No one expects that shit. Just don’t bullshit people.

The original story of Mulan is anti-war and pro-Confucian style filial piety. There’s nothing in here than resembles any of it’s themes.

You know why I don’t watch big budget movies from China? Because they’re mostly big budget Hollywood movie ripoffs without any thought given to interpreting them through the lens of the local culture(I’m talking about culture, not the settings/backdrop), something that Hong Kong movies did so well in the 80s and early 90s, which is why they also rip off Hong Kong movies but the results are even worse unless Wu Jing is at the helm.

What they normally end up becoming is something that visually resembles a Hollywood blockbuster set in some CGI version of China with the storylines and characters not making any sense because they’re just mindlessly ripped off from existing Hollywood movie templates.

THIS movie somehow managed to look like a ripoff of a big budget China movie trying really hard to pander to the China market whereas China movies are made the way they are because the local audience likes big budget Hollywood movies, which makes even less sense than that Nicholas Cage movie set in China where he played a character called “The White Ghost”. At least that was a lot more entertaining and I still believe his line in the movie where he proudly announces,“I AM THE WHITE GHOST!” was an elaborate prank played on him by the crew. I actually highly recommend the latter if you want to watch a “so bad it’s good” kind of movie.

So what’s good about this movie?

The fight choreography. But they’re just pretty little dances without any depth , something that you can see executed far better in any of the big budget crap Zhang Yimou has made. Zhang Yimou(House of Flying Daggers, Hero), however, may be overrated but he isn’t a shitty director. He can make a really good movie(To Live, Not One Less, Red Sorghum) when he wants to. At his worst, he makes The Great Wall. Yes, that piece of crap starring Matt Damon.

Donnie Yen. Donnie Yen opens half a can of whoopass for 2secs on the battlefield because he’s Donnie Yen(you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it) and then they CUT AWAY. Good job, people, good job.

Gong Li is still hot. She’s also a damn fine actress of Meryl Streep calibre but her talent is wasted here.

The silly usage of the word “chi”.

This seriously made me lol. “Chi” can mean 1 of 2 things. It’s either part of some old ying yang nonsense, or some kind of superpower found in wuxia novels and movies where characters use it to fly, make the ground explode or “throw their voices over 1000 miles”. Powerful shit.

When you use “chi” in a traditional Chinese context, there’s both ying and yang “chi”. Yang is good shit like sunshine, rainbows and masculinity. “Yin” is the bad shit like darkness and femininity. You need both to balance each other out because we can’t just have nice things. Once a man gets married, his wife drains his yang “chi”. You can see how this isn’t just a Chinese concept lol. Obviously, the New Age bullshit being sold nowadays redefines this, but it is what it is.

The cinematography and set design is pretty good, almost good enough to detract from the shitty editing.

The dialogue was worse than the English dubbed versions of some old Italian schlock horror movies. That made me lol too but it just gets off putting after a while. I tried to translate some of it into Mandarin in my head but it still made no sense so I gave up.

So, I don’t know. This will probably be a hit in China because the China market will lap up anything that looks pretty and colorful with a big budget. Kids will probably enjoy it. I didn’t.

2/10

They’re racists and have no clue how Asian societies work. (2020 comment LOL)

…raises hand, hangs head in shame…

Will definitely be watching, and enjoying!

Liu Yifei is pretty cute in it. You just wanna pinch her cheeks when she’s trying to look fierce for the fight scenes lol.

Yes, and yes…

I anticipate giving that 10/10.

Host (2020)

Couple of chicks and a dude conduct an online seance and they’re about to find out the true horror of ZOOM! Actually, I hate telegram even more but whatever.

It’s very well directed. The acting is great. There are, however, lots of limitations on what you can do with a premise like this. To put it simply, I admire the effort and artistry put into it, but if I had to pay to watch this in the theater, I would probably walk out wishing I’d spent my money elsewhere. It’s not so bad when you watch it at home.

As for the horror aspect, if you’re easily scared like my wife, it’s pretty damn scary. For people like me, nah. The last movie that actually scared me was The Conjuring, and that’s probably because James Wan threw in shit from S.E Asian folklore along with the Christian stuff into the mix. James Wan needs to make more horror movies.

Oh wow. They probably pirated the English language version and heard the horrific dialogue lololol. I’m seriously waiting for legit reactions to that hilarious nonsense about “chi”.

As the father of eight daughters, and thus a Disney Princess Connoisseur who even managed to be enjoyed by the Princess and the Frog, I concur.

This is the absolute worst piece of crap to come out of China since Covid.

It’s boring. Vaguely nationalistic worship of the Great Leader and all that. Like I think Xi watched old Goebbels film reels for inspiration. Maybe a couple of reels of Birth of a Nation with President Wilson, as the bad guys (who I guess were supposed to be Mongols) seemed “curiously” more like Uyghurs. Subtle distinction, but they were clearly more Turkic and Arabic than Mongolian. Gee, I wonder why.

And then the movie also had 1970s I-am-woman-here-me-roar undertones, coming from somewhere in South Florida retirement homes for bitter lesbians.

Combined was a mishmash of rather unpleasant, overly-trod themes that did not taste great together.

1/10. The cartoon was way better. Hell, the second cartoon was way better.

Agreed. When I see James Wan involved in a movie I want to watch it. More or less the same for Blumhouse and Guillermo del Toro as well.

It’s not even made by anyone from China lol. That’s why it’s all so bizarre. The entire film crew is Western. The director is from New Zealand. SJWs were previously whining about all of them being “white”. I didn’t see any China production companies in the credits.

NONE of the actors are China nationals. Donnie Yen is from Hong Kong. I think he may have an American passport. Jet Li(the emperor) and Gong Li(the witch) are Singaporeans. The lead actress, the dude that played her father, and Jason Scott Lee(the main bad guy) are Americans. The actress(Cheng Peipei) that played the mid wife is Taiwanese. The supporting cast are all either Canadians or Americans.

I think he genuinely puts entertaining(or scaring the crap out of) his audience first. It’s why I still appreciate the stuff he made that didn’t work like Dead Silence. The only other director I can think of that does is Sam Raimi.

Yeah, I don’t know. Having seen (and made) my share of board room decisions, a policy was probably laid down to try to make movies directly for (the more lucrative) foreign markets and “start with China.”

So the marketing guys got together with the script guys, and this pseudo-nationalistic piece of crap came out.

Reminds me of GM’s decision to make and name the Chevy Nova to target Latin America markets.

You know, the “no va”.

I was surprised to hear Jason Scott Lee was in it…i don’t believe he’s been in anything for over 15 years. In 2000 he was getting popular.

Funny how Jason Scott Lee looked 5’6" when he played in “Dragon,a Bruce Lee Story” and then looked 6’4" in “Soldier”. Both were good films.

I think I last saw him in The Prophecy 2.

I watched Tenet and I have no idea what the fuck was going on lol.

Yeah it was silly.

The top grossing movies in China are either Hollywood(Endgame) movies, Hollywood/ Hong Kong movie(The Wandering Earth, Operation Red Sea, Wolf Warrior 2) ripoffs or local comedies.

(Operation Red Sea and Wolf Warrior 2 are fucking amazing, though, the former having been directed by a HK director, Dante Lam, and the latter by Wu Jing, who had previously been acting in HK movies for most of his career, most notably Donnie Yen’s SPL.)

Their comedies and occasional family drama are, however, very localized culturally, which is why movies like Crazy Rich Asians flopped there even though it was a hit in other countries in Asia with a large Chinese population previously under colonial rule, so they’re near impossible for foreigners to emulate.

Disney would have had a far better chance of a massive hit with a remake of Cinderella. Unless they decide to change the race of the titular character or something.

Back in the day we watched each episode at least a week apart so we had time to forget.

By the way, the show Alias was the final death nail to X Files and it’s also a great binge watch. You gotta pace yourself though because each season is like 30 episodes.

5 seasons times 30 episodes = 150 Jennifer Garner in her prime in high def. Does not disappoint.

30 episodes a season… yeah I’d say some pacing my be prudent.

Saw the new trailer for Dune…keeping my expectations low. One of my favorite books of all times. The movie they did in the 80s put a bad taste in my mouth. The mini series in 2000 wasn’t half bad.
