Even a Chinese person does not universally gain a unique right to control Chinese stories.
Exactly.
Uncut Gems
I didn’t really get into this. It was a good, well-acted movie, but I didn’t get invested with any of the characters. Julia Fox though…good grief. 7/10
American Ultra
Interesting premise spoiled by terrible writing and some really odd editing decisions. The cinematography was pretty good. Jesse Eisenberg looked completely out of his element during all of the action sequences. Kristen Stewart looked more adept at fight choreography, which is saying a lot. 5.5/10
Ozark Season 3
I got 3 episodes in before deciding I can’t watch this show anymore. Laura Linney’s character pisses me off way too much. It looks like they’re trying to make her the Walter White of the show, but she’s not starting with the same somewhat noble goal that Walt did, so her apparent descent into megalomania comes without any previous sympathies for her character.
This also seems to be turning into another one of those shows where every adult male is completely incompetent, and every female is cunning and wise. ![]()
Glad I read this. I’m 6 episodes in and have been somewhat neutral if I want to continue.
I’ve been watching an old show, Monk, about a brilliant homicide detective in SF (the nostalgic version, not today’s NYC version). Some seriously funny moments.
He’s a germophobe! Some tips for modern living LOL.
I love Tony Shalhoub. He’s my favorite part of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which is another pretty good show (it’s starting to get a little dumb now after 3 seasons).
Monk is fantastic. And I’ve been on the fence regarding Ozark after watching 2 episodes a year ago.
Devs
Currently watching this on Hulu. It’s an interesting concept, but a lot of the acting feels very unnatural. I’m going to blame that on the director because several of the characters seem very stiff and awkward in a very unrealistic way; almost like they’re not actually people. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them turn out to be AI at the end. The technological aspect has me intrigued enough to keep coming back, since I’m pretty sure it’s only a miniseries.
Also watched Louis CK’s new special last night. You can stream if from his website for $8. It’s hilarious. 9/10
I’ve been debating CK’s standup. I’m sure I would laugh but I didn’t know if I should actually consider him a creep or not and if I should give him money, haha.
Didn’t he own up to his creep behavior though? I doubt he ruined anyone’s life by beating his meat in a hotel room. I’ve had women ask me to do way weirder shit than that. People are kinky.
Funny is funny and cancel culture is toxic.
Been working my way through the movies I haven’t seen on IMDB top 250 list (basically the top 250 based on viewer ratings).
First I watched #8 on the list which was 1957’s Twelve Angry Men. It was pretty good, but I would not put it on a top 10 list. I feel this film was probably very good for it’s time. For a movie that primarily takes place in one single room, I was sucked in. The film delved into epistemology (a interest of mine), which perked my ears up. I would give this film an 8/10.
The next film I watched was Schindler’s List at #7 on the list. I thought I might be let down by the hype this film has, but it was superb. I found several scenes difficult to watch due to the brutality of the movie. The powerful message of the film had me thinking about this movie several days after watching it. Overall, I give this film 9.5-10/10, it was excellent.
I don’t know. I didn’t follow the situation at all or know anything that has happened since. That’s why I said I wasn’t sure.
This has been languishing in my Netflix queue for a LONG time now. I haven’t been able to work up the gumption to strap in for a 3+ hr Holocaust movie.
He definitely did some creepy, but ultimately harmless shit. He also owned it, apologized, and suffered pretty severely. Far too severely IMO.
It is worth watching. The 3 hr 15 minute run time actually did not seem too long while watching it (every scene was important). IMO, it is about as close to a perfect film as I have seen, and at the same time I’ll probably just watch it once as it was just so emotionally painful.
I was getting that vibe in season 2 - turned me off from the 2nd half of the season honestly - that and the daughter annoyed me (although I get her angst and think it’s appropriate).
It’s okay my dude I was just trying to answer your question. I’m not going to judge you for not being as up-to-date as I am on the cummings and goings of Louis CK. His case was one of the more oddball, innocent-ish instances of #metoo and #timesup. The angle against him was that he was maliciously exploiting his superior position in the socio-racial power structure to sexually abuse marginalized women who agreed to come to his hotel room.
Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. I wasn’t there. Apparently he beat his meat in front of some ladies, and none of these encounters managed to blossom into a lasting, healthy relationship. Maybe this traumatized some of these grown women who agreed to go to his hotel room, but it seems like something most adults should manage to overcome.
In summary, it is completely fine to be entertained by Louis C.K. telling jokes.
It’s fine - I was in an irritated mood earlier and probably sounded more pissed off than needed when I replied.
But haha “cummings”…nice.
I watched Louis’ Beacon Theater standup after all the allegations had come out against him, and that was the third time watching it. @twojarslave is right - funny is funny. Not to mention, he straight up says in that standup that he just jerks off whenever he feels like it, and that standup was WELL before the allegations came out.
The fact of the matter is, Eddie Murphy has never really faced more than some tut-tutting, and is a comedy legend, when in the '80s he was strutting around in leather because "Faggots aren’t allowed to look at my ass while I’m on stage. That’s why I keep moving while up here.” And he was funny as a motherfucker too.
