Can I get that strong before age catches up with me?
I’m 46, 195 lbs, 8 months of powerlifting training by a great coach. Went from 25 years as a desk jockey to maxes now of 365/255/455. Making great progress and early next year I’ll be at 405/275/500. I eat well, mainly tracking protein. First competition scheduled March and hope to hit those second numbers. I’m also on TRT, dosed at a level to keep my total T and free T in the upper 10% for my age (about 150 ml/week)
I reckon progress in the lifts will slow considerably as I close out my honeymoon phase and have to start grinding for modest gains. Had I started this 10 years ago the story would be different, but I gotta think age related strength loss will eventually cause me to hit a plateau.
So for you guys later in your 40s and into your 50s who have been lifting for a while, what’s been your experience.
You should be able to do it. I am Your age and weight , I started doing 5/3/1, 28 months ago, I was at 325/195/375 then. I am at (330 x 10 squat) 240 B, and 405 x 8-9 dl. ( with No trt)

In some cases getting strong as you get older is impacted by the mileage your body has.[/quote]
Bulldog is exactly right. I’m 47 and have been powerlifting for 3 years after training in more of BB style for the previous nearly thirty years. I’ve made steady progress without any TRT. I don’t squat competitively due to knee and hernia issues but my bench and pull numbers in competition are 360/524. Not sure if my numbers would still be moving forward if I would have begun powerlifting a decade earlier.
To hell with age. A little while ago I was at a meet and I watched Mike Francis, who was 50 something, deadlift over 800 pounds. He was in the 275 lbs weight class but still he was incredible. I also have witnessed many powerlifters in competition in their 60s and 70s. It’s about will. The TRT is a nice addition for your training. I wish I could get my Doc to give me that but he said no my test was fine. I’m only 44 but I am going to do everything I can to make the younger ones work harder to beat my numbers. Go get em’
Many of you guys picked up on the TRT thing. I first came to this site b/c of the excellent TRT forum, and there information is provided on TRT that is beyond the knowledge of most docs.
Fortunately my doc specializes in hormone therapies for men and women, and even though my Total T and Free T were not out of the ‘normal’ range for my age, they were in the bottom quartile. His goal was to have me in top 10%, and that corresponds to a modest dosage.
I’ve been on TRT for 3 years following a big weight loss diet (dropped 35 lbs of body fat) and only the last 8 months or so have I been in the gym.
Surely T has contributed to fairly rapid strength gains, but (i) the dosage I’m taking is an order of magnitude lower than a typical BB cycle and (ii) I used to be strong in the past and muscle memory is legit.
That’s a long way of saying, if you suspect you are low T, get your labwork done and post up at the TRT forum. Most docs will F up your diagnosis.

I just started TRT. I am into my 3rd week of self injecting. I am taking 1ml every week. From what I can tell, it is working. Recovery is great. I feel like I could hit every body part 3 or 4 times per week if I had time. It is awesome so far.

Check out the other forum. Be aware that just taking T sometimes backfires over time due to a host of issues such as aromatization of T into Estrodial. And, 1x week injections can cause T to crash for some people.
I take 1ml/week (=200 mg/week) in MWF divided doses, along with an estrogen blocker (Anastrozole) and zinc. I also take hcg to keep the boys actively producing T and keep them from shrinking into raisins.
