The Psychology Thread 🧠

Same logic could be applied to all musicians and pro-athletes too? Actually all the chefs too, since fine cooking is just playing with the food.

Who needs culture, sports or scholars anyway. Hahah.

They arguably provide a service; I couldn’t care less about sports really, and aren’t actively trying to destroy western civilization… some irrelevant musicians are but I digress

I was joking. World would be a terribly dull place if everybody would do only something that’s vital for our societies to run.

Imagine life without your favourite music, foods or movies.

And academics actually do provide vital things for our society, such as laws and democracy. Imagine your life without a proper study of history. We would have forgotten 99% of what we know already.

But I understand your point. There are vital jobs, like police or nurses (nurses are actually often quite leftists where I live), and then there are other jobs. A prime example of a job what really does not provide/produce anything to society are stockbrokers. Which are probably all but leftists. Hahah.

Im being hyperbolic but I think most people are just beyond tired of their never-ending grievance BS and unhinged nonsense.

There are those like that. But there are middle-, upper-class, and even rich people who hold leftist beliefs.

Angela Merkel, no dummy, with a Phd in chemistry and another degree in physics, was a lefty politician who put German citizens at risk.

Obviously, a hidden agenda and let’s be frankā€¦ā€œeducationā€ isn’t always =/= intelligence or smart.

Surely. I think it has always been the case.

Scholars or philosophers are often being hated.

They’ve infected every stratum of society

That study shows IQ links to less authoritarianism and more liberal views it is measuring psychological traits not political affiliations. Half the effect comes from education/income i.e. college indoctrination. (the questions were asked 15 yrs later). Per the study when accounting for education/income, 30-50% of IQ’s link to liberalism disappears. Did you read the actual study? Many of the questions asked that were seen as ā€œLeft Wingā€ would apply to what would be seen as the politically Libertarians or the Right.

What side was screaming ā€œTrust the scienceā€ and bowing authority?

Sure. This was one thing that bothered me too. It’s not merely a leftist trait.

You mean liberal right? I see left and right only economical divisions. You can be authoritarian left or authoritarian right or whatever. Study should speak about base values.

I just scimmed them throught. I did find both study’s interesting, but I did not approach them super seriously. I did see some problems with both studies.

Subjects of how/why values form and attractiveness are pretty complex and they would need much more depth and analysis. Both studies could propably be done with opposite results too.

I did not say it yet proves anything, neither did the attractiveness study.

I have no idea what you mean here. I think ā€trusting the scienceā€ is not a bad thing, if it means we try to build our worldview on to some measurable facts.

Most people just does not understand how science works. There is no ready answers or authoritarianism in science, studies just gives us hints how the world might work. You need awful lot studies before you can say something concrete about something like this. And studies do wary in quality.

It’s common in debates to throw individual studies as truths. And the nyances/semantics are important. Claiming based on these two links that liberals are more intelligent or conservatives more attractive is a stretch.

Oh, and it’s far more common to people be less critical towards studies that support their base values.

In real science, you are correct.

In the US… trusting The Scienceā„¢ does not mean trusting scientific findings, it means trusting whatever science agrees with your parties’ political agenda.
So basically the opposite of science.

Liberals in the US used The Scienceā„¢ as a cudgel and anyone who questions what a single study finds is considered a far right extremist, misogynist, white supremacist, bigoted dullard.

These people that scream ā€œTrust The Scienceā„¢ā€ are the same people that think boys can be girls, even if they’re still equipped with male parts and corresponding hormones.

Ah, got it. So using ā€the scienceā€ as a validation of your political views. Yeah. It’s done in Europe too, by all parties.

I’m hoping every thread on this board can be turned into the same political debate where people tell us what all the people who disagree with them believe and are like.

While Trusting the scienceā„¢ was occasionally used as a political cudgel, the same should be said of Trusting the presidentā„¢. Facts are still preferred to truthinessā„¢.

A guy like me believes in reasonable free speech. This does not depend on those in a position to control it. I do not like to see free speech taken too far by academics and used to stifle debate. But I also don’t like it when autocrats say what you shouldn’t say.

Principle is more important than partisanship. And in the broader scheme of things, it is better to err on the side of kindness than cruelty. This does not mean, however, being so open-minded to weak arguments that the brain falls out of place and can’t engage.

Who was the president that mobilized industry to switch gears and start manufacturing respirators and filter media for masks, mobilized any relevant branch of academia and granted immunity to companies producing vaccines?

 What was his name again…
Man, its on the tip of my tongue.

It’s the political game. You always read your opponents actions ā€as Satan reads the bibleā€

I’m really, really happy to live in a society where there are several political parties which keeps the polarization somewhat in control.

I’m so shit keeping on the topic. Hahah.

Well said.

Let me go even further off topic and say that I very much enjoy your presence here at TN.

I didn’t name a president. I think several presidents from both parties have tried to control language.

Oh, ok. I recognized Truthines from Steven Colberts use of the word. He introduced it in his new word bit he used to do.

He still might, just haven’t watched him in years though.
