I am not so sure about the shrugging. I prefer to pull my shoulders back nice and tight.

An old Dan John write up in a Crossfit Journal says to grab the bar and hold it down in front of you and bounce it a bit and move your hands in or out until the bar is resting where the top of the zipper of your pants would be.
I’ve been doing OHS for a month or so now and I’m back to using a broom handle since I’ve got a partially torn pec but they’ve improved my back squats immensely.
That is a very good tip. I will try it today and respond with my results.
Thanks. Sully

About 6 inches from the inside of the collars. I train at 24 Hour Fatness and they have the suckiest bars ever. No Knurling on them so my hands slide all over the place. I have tried using liquid chalk but it does not help much. As one would expect from a sucky gym like this, they have no bumper plates and frown upon dumping the weights to the floor so I have to try and catch it before it hits the floor.
I asked Dan John today about what to do about my problem with my elbows “breaking” when doing OHS and he said to try and concentrate on stretching the bar more and that I may be weak on mjy “whatever strength”.[/quote]
interesting … i too am weak on my whatever strength
re: the grip width. do ANY bars have knurling all of the way out to the cuffs? my 24 hour fatness bars are the same way. i have to butt my hands up against the inside of the collars when i start. otherwise, they end up sliding there anyhow. note: you do not have to snatch it up there. clean it it up or get it up any way. set it on your shoulders. set your grip. jerk it up.
sully’s, if you’re 5’8", that grip suggestion may be a tall order.

Bastard,
That is how I have been doing it lately as I had developed a nasty forearm sprain trying to snatch it overhead and yes I am 68 inches tall(1 short of perfect) and the Dan John grip tip put my hands at about 6 inches from the collars.
Today I tried Drop Snatches for the first time ever. I made the first set at 185X5 no problem but then fear got into my head and could not pull myself down into the snatch. I finished off by doing 4x5@185, w/60secs rest, with a behind the neck push press into the OHS. I really concentrated on pulling the bar apart and it really helped with the elbows bending.
I really need to work on my Drop Snatch. Yeah, I know that sounds really weird.
Krollmonster,
By high, I really just meant ‘not deliberately held down in the shoulder socket.’
Good reps w/165, BTW.

Actually, just doing some OHS in my kitchen I see that my shoulders are shrugged, just not all the way.
nice to see somebody lift with good form, kroll.

you’re looking at it ALL wrong. performed properly, the snatch pulls you in …

affirmative … i sent it to a buddy for reference.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I think I’ll be practicing my form with just the bar for the next few weeks. I probably am gripping the bar wide enough, but it hurt my wrists a little bit while doing it (not afterwards), so if I need to hold it any wider I’ll progress slowly until I have the necessary flexibility in the wrists.
Thanks for the wise words, Bastard. My fiancee is visiting for a few weeks, so that gives me an extra incentive to work on my snatch technique.
