The Open Boat

Thanks Brute and Laststand!

Deload training–5 mile run. Hips felt pretty damn good. I’m enjoy the running again and looking forward to increasing my mileage.

HIp rehab: TKEs, stretching, foam rolling, balance work.

Press handstand work: Straddle l sit holdsx just 3; handstands x10; straddle stand to press x 10 (I’m getting stronger here)

Dynamic flexibility work: I’ve got my splits back (except middle) but my split leaps and jumps are woefully lacking in extension. Kicks, jumps, leaps.

Just came over to whistle at your hubbie up there. Is that inappropriate? Cute kido. Your description of the guy in your race was soo funny. Glad your running is bringing you the JOY. Flexibility and stretching is something I’ve neglected and I HAVE to start making more time for it.

Nadia, I love the description of your runs. I actually find long distance running fascinating - particularly “hitting the wall,” the mental fortitude to get past it is amazing. And you ARE the lioness!! Wonderful.

Also, thanks for the pullup advice you gave to Puff. I’m going to keep all of that in mind as well.

Pic of your men is great! So cute.

Love the aggression in here too! Get it, girl!

I love the pic, never knew your hubby was cut like that =D

Hope you’re enjoying your deload =D

Such a wonderful description of your run. You won, he lost. ha ha!

Interesting that your hubby doesn’t run but likes the prowler stuff. I would think these would be complementary activities.

So happy to hear that your hip is behaving itself. My knee is letting me do most of what I want, so I’m grateful for that, as I’m sure you are to your hip.

sweet hubbie and kido pic

Puff whistle away. But no ass grabbing. Running is going well. The flexibility work is really hard to get started on. But, if your consistent it’s not too bad–and you’ll see gains there too.

Thanks Masch. You’ll be up and running again soon. My husband started pushing a prowler pretty quickly after his surgery–it was touted as good for getting good blood flow to the joint. Are you getting an rehab physical therapy advice or are you on your own?

Nikki: My husband is the one who got me lifting. He does look awesome.

Kimba: Prowler is more anerobic than aerobic. People seem to gravity to one or the other.

Thanks frenchie!

Still Deloading

Hip rehab: TKEs, balance work, bw squats

Press handstand work: Straddle stand to press x10; straddle L hang; HLRs really hard variation–alternating lifting one leg at a time 2 sets of 5

Stretching: static and dynamic foam rolling

4 mile run

5 mile run. Early. I love running first thing in the morning. I was going to push it to 8, but I decided that if I did that I wouldn’t/ shouldn’t run on Sunday. I opted for the 2 short runs instead. And if I’m lucky I’ll get to run Monday morning too. My spirit is willing, but It depends on the body. Pace today–relaxed enough that I could sing out loud along with the music on my ipod–a sure sign of crazy, but where I was I had the world to myself so I didn’t care. Better than singing in the shower.

I like a run. I’m planning on doing one in the morning. It’s nice being out early before too many people are about. Unfortunately it seems as though every bastard with a garden is having a barbecue/party this evening and their laughter and conversations are keeping me up. Sods.

As for you, I’m impressed that you can sing and run at the same time. I can’t even talk and run. I know you’re supposed to be able to, but I’m just too busy breathing.

^lovely image. Thank you for sharing it.

You say “crazy” like its a bad thing.

I share your enthusiasm for early morning runs. Especially since I’m at my least productive, work-wise, in the AM. Might as well get SOMETHING accomplished.

Do you eat before your early runs?

You were the PW who had trouble focusing when the hubby entered, right?
If so, I do see why lol
And he’s even more awesome for introducing you to lifting. Hence how you became a TN PW <3

haha. i thought i was being very restrained in not making comments about nadia’s hubbie but lolz at the rest of you. i still think he wisely chooses not to run since you can get pretty competitive with that…

your descriptions of running are wonderful. almost make me want to run. almost.

you guys are lucky heading into summer. so weird to think that that is the case for most of the rest of the world…

Cal: when I ran in HS I always chatted with my teammates during a long run. SOmetimes I miss running with other people. I ran with my sister in law over spring break, and it was actually really nice. But, running is really my me time. I like the solitude, the absolute control over pace, route, and distance.

Thanks Arachne.

Kimba: I don’t eat before my morning runs. ON a long run–more than 8–I probably would elect to eat something like a peanut butter sandwhich.

Nikki: I know right–he’s hot. We can’t train together. He’s too ass grabby anyway.

Alexus: Shit it doesn’t feel like summer here. I think we only have two seasons–rainy and dry. And right now, it’s still rainy. And cool. It’s okay. My skin is not a fan of the sun. If it were out, I’d be hiding from it.

Diet: I have failed at my “I’m only going to eat junk food on the weekends and after 6pm diet.” Simple carbs have taken over my plate again. But, I’m going to try again. But even less strictly this go around. I’m now on the “don’t eat shit all the time diet.” Baby steps.

Training: New 5-3-1 cycle. Cut the deload a little short, because I couldn’t take it anymore.

Sunday: 4 mile run/ walk.

5-5-5 squats

Tried to do a more substantial warmup. (thanks for tip elliott)

Tkes 20x3
BW squat: 35x3
BW Bulgarian split squats 10x3
Step ups: 35x3

Squats:
Barx10
65x5
85x5
100x5
115x14.

Did my MP BBB today. (I’m going to do BBB squats with my MP day).

barx10x2
50x10x2
55x10x1

Dynamic flexibility work
Straddle press handstand work

Monday: 4 mile run.

I’m having real trouble motivating myself to diet. I know I need to lose a bit but I just can’t seem to get into it. My usual MO is that I put on weight over winter and then drop it all again between January and May. This year, that hasn’t happened. I know I’ve done some strict diets in the past (V-Diet, low carb, and so on) and they do work for me, but WTF, I just can’t face it. So I completely sympathise with you.

How’s the straddle press handstand coming along?

I find your diet struggle interesting, so bear with me. What is your definition of “shit”? Are we talking twinkies/ho-hos/hot pockets sort of shit, or pizza, burgers & beer? What do you eat more of than anything else? Do you hate veggies or can’t prioritize cooking them?

Eating nothing before the AM run, hmmm… What about coffee/tea or water? Hydration and nutrition are just so different between cycling (what I know about) and running (about which I know very little).

14 reps @ 115! I crown you volume queen. I like how your BBB MP sets went up in weight throughout the sets. Trust me, I’ll be excited the day I can do my entire MP BBB with the oly bar.

Cal: I think the diet mentality is the problem. Sure you can crash diet and lose weight, but it is not sustainable. You really have to change the way you eat and your relationship for food. I would like to adopt the food is fuel mentality, but I have not been successful with that. Food is celebratory. Food is stress relieving. Food is consoling. I don’t know how to break the emotional relationship that I have with my eats. But I want to. Because I want to be a better athlete and I know nutrition is a huge part of that. And I want to be healthy. And I want to be a good role model for my kids. So, I’m going to keep on working on it.

The press handstand is also something I’m toiling away at without any significant progress. Here’s a video from today. I’m working it in 3 parts (1) straddle l sit to straddle stand-- I’ve made zero progress in trying to ge my ass up, but I can hold the straddle l sit for a bit longer; (2) straddle stand to handstand–I can do sometimes, mostly I use my bed as a spotter though; (3) the negative is the only part I can consistently do.

Kimba: I think the biggest failing of my diet is that it is principally simple carbs. I often sit at my desk and munch on a bag of pretzles all day long. That could be breakfast and lunch for me on any given day. I write better when I’m chewing. If I’m working at home instead of eating a bag of pretzles I’ll eat frozen cookie dough with tons of milk.

Dinner is usually solid, because of the kids. But I don’t eat breakfast or lunch with them except on the weekends–when my diet is decidely better. My husband is a very good cook and he cooks all weekend.

I don’t eat fast food very often. Pizza maybe once a week. I don’t mind salad or vegetables, but I don’t prefer them, but again I do eat them. I also eat meat and fish.

Really, I just need to work on my alone time eating-- breakfast, lunch and snack times during the week. I need to increase my intake of fruits, vegetables and lean protein. And decrease my intake of snacky food–pretzles, cookies, granola bars, bagels, chips, cereals, ect.

If I lived alone I would live on cereal, bread, pasta, pretzles, cheese, and cookies. Lucky for me I don’t!

Your relationship with food brought this song to mind (I hope you can play it):

http://new.music.yahoo.com/deirdre-flint/tracks/food--6465643

I write best in dead silence. Even the sound of myself chewing would drive me bonkers. I guess now I’m happy about that!

How about switching out the pretzels for a bag of almonds? Either whole almonds or a bag of slivered, blanched almonds so it takes more effort to eat the equivalent of a whole nut. Just that one thing. Next I’d suggest bringing a container of greek yogurt (strawberry, peach, blueberry…anything that will get you to eat it). The protein content is huge and the calorie burden is low. Eat it for a mid-morning snack and don’t even worry about refrigeration. That’s two easy things that would pump up the protein and still feed the Nadia-Food love affair.

Loved the video! Loved the song!

Thanks for the vid - what you can do is way ahead of what I can do and I’m sure you’ll get there. I know you will - you’re determined.

Anyway, as far as the food goes, yes, I think you hit the nail on the head there. I enjoy food too much to really see it as just fuel. And I live alone. I don’t really go for junk food but I can hoover down immense quantities of dried fruit and nuts, which have an astoundingly high calorie content. I also sometimes get cravings and go off the reservation, eating stuff like delicious fruit bread (even though I am wheat intolerant and it makes me feel like crap the next day). I need to find a way to manage this.
