The Open Boat

Hey frenchie-I’m flattered you find my form aesthetically pleasing. What a compliment coming from the eye of an artist.

Seems like a cool method you got for combining weights, gymnastics and conditioning.

I knew you could do it, yep yep I did ;D

I have a similar story about development and gymnastics, mainly boobs. My coaches who used to love me and wanted me to represent the gym in State turned their back on me when I got boobs. Assholes. </3

I understand completely about the fear. Way to go not giving into it!

When I turned 40, I quit figure skating because I was at the point (axel jumps) where I absolutely risked injury wiping out on them every time I stepped onto the ice. Not continuing to improve was not an option either. Being a self-employed person with shitty health insurance and no paid sick days, it honestly made no sense for me to continue to take that risk.

No regrets, but at times I do miss skating. I skate in my dreams alot, and damn I’m good.

Take good care of that hip flexor. I sound like a broken record, but ART has helped me so, so much that I would recommend it to you as well.

i vote for vids of silly drills.

that is really interesting (and also very sad) to hear of your experiences with puberty and sports. i guess i thought that sports would spare females the typical anxieties, but guess not. i got massively self conscious around that time. thinking i was a fat oversized elephant. not becaus of sports, just because. i really do hope that things are better for young women these days (damn, how old am i??)

oh my goodness! oh please please please vid your gymnastic stuff!

beam backhands prings?! WOW!!! :D!! please per-sue this dream! so i can selfishly and wholeheartedly live vicariously through you!

any and all gymnastics talk will be read by me ravenously

I bet you you have a wicked arch on the bench…have we seen a vid of this?

Glad you are starting to sort everything out. I kinda go through the same thing…I want to be lean but I also want to just lift heavy shit

What a shitty experience that must have been. I was a h.s. cheerleader when I had body image issues. My solution was to start smoking. At 15. NIce. Somehow I managed to cheer and tumble and run on the lacrosse field. Ah, youth.

There was certainly a lot of pressure to be light/skinny in my gym when I was a kid. I have distinct memories of being 6 or 7 years old and made to sit on the floor and listen to our coach yell and scream about what we weren’t allowed to eat. Fortunately for me & my sister we were young and active with speedy metabolisms and the tendency to build muscle (me more than her.) But I did quit right around the beginning of puberty. Still didn’t spare me from the body image stuff.

Like the handstand/straddle practice. Must be a lot of fun.

Love the gymnastics vids because it parallels where my daughter is right now on her journey. She is a mere hair’s-width away from getting her kip. She hasn’t tried a back walkover on beam yet. Luckily, she’s too young to have body issues. But she’ll probably be built super lean, so that may help some. Of course, I’ve always lamented not having much breast tissue and feeling like I was built like a prepubescent boy with thighs. Ahh, well. We all have our issues.

Nikki: I’m pretty excited about my training right now. I love chasing the numbers, but it’s also nice to translate that strength and conditioning in to the acquisition of new skills.

Kimba: I didn’t realize you were a skater. Very cool. I’m sorry you had to give it up. But, I understand. Twisting is particularly dangerous stuff. I haven’t even considered trying to throw a full on floor. I’m not sure I ever will again. But, I’m enjoying focusing on the basics. And getting them back. That’s enough for me.

I know you’re a huge ART fan, and I probably would benefit from it. But, uggh, I hate appointments–dr appts, hair appts–I just don’t have time for that stuff. I still need to get my daughter in for her ortho eval. The dog needs to see the vet. I need to go to the dentist. My son has to see the dr for his yearly checkup. He turned 8 in March. Yep, I need to schedule that. Plus, I have to throw him some kind of friend birthday party. Still haven’t done that. Damn. Nope there is no way can I keep up with weekly or even monthly ART therapy. It’s foam rolling and ice baths for me.

Alexus: I think it is the rare woman who avoids body image issues. And that is a very sad thing. I’m hoping I can do better by my daughter.

Brute: Thanks for your support and enthusiasm. There will be plenty of vids for sure!

Mim: I don’t arch a lot on bench. Your bench arch is supreme. Honestly, when lifting I just go with what feels natural. An exaggerated arch on bench doesn’t. And, I’m not competing (yet) so I don’t have a reason to shorten the range of motion.

Veggie: It sucks that a lot of coaches have the mentality that a girl/ woman needs to get lighter to improve performance rather than just get stronger. I’m not too heavy. I’m too weak.

Ksnap: Glad to hear your daughter is doing well. She’ll pass me by in no time I’m sure. And you’re right–if the boobs aren’t too big; they’re too small.

Training

Damnit to hell if I am not fucking sore to the touch from my squat/ running drill workout on Sunday. I deadlifted anyway. I learned today that my son has to have the tubes put back in his ears. That’s this Friday. It’s a minor surgery. But, I’m not happy about it. But, I’m not happy that he’s not hearing either. And the meds didn’t work. So.

DLS
barx20
135x5
155x3
175x3
205x10 (+3 rep pr)

BBB 155x10x5 (Suffered from physical and mental fatigue through these, but got them done and kept them as fast and quick from the floor as I could. I really value the BBB sets in terms of increasing my performance on my work sets. They are horrible to do, but they pay off big. So, I labor through).

GHR bWx10

HLR BWx10

Here’s my 205x10 from today. I’m getting really close to a 2x bw DL. And I want that.

love the outfit you’re rockin Nadia

2x bw deads is awesome - go get it!

Perfect. Strength and conditioning coaches around the world are saying “She gets it.”

You are KILLIN’ those deadlifts! Abso-freakin-lutely Awesome.

your goal found you. i’m so happy. beam scares the hell out of me. either you get it or… missing oly lifts seems easy in comparison (so much practice) but maybe you get used to missing safely. looking forward to seeing how your gymnastics develops. and your strength too, of course

Lovely deadlifting. Keep posting the vids - they’re inspiring.

AWESOME Nadia!!! Are you lifting in Uggs? You are a beast!! A beautiful graceful freakin beast!!

I want to order a belt…

Fuck yeah! Love the vid. And the determination despite being so sore. I am remembering the true meaning of that word thanks to the GVT.

Are you DLing in UGGS? Just curious.

Sorry to hear about your son. Hope it all goes well.

You are seriously killing those DLs Nadia.
You are beyond awesome.

Sorry to hear about your son as well.
You’re a strong person, in more ways than your training <3

Despite what you write, those deads looked easy for you. Way to dominate a 200+ lb. weight!

Frenchie: I’m quite the dresser. There was one more layer atop that when I started. It’s all about staying warm. And, yep I’m a DL mission. I’m feeling them and very excited about the progress that I’m making.

Thanks Elliott! But, I’m not sure how much I get it. I went to gymnastics sore from DLing yesterday and was unhappy about that. Balancing strength, conditioning, and sport specific training is tough.

Alexus: I am really excited about my training right now! It’s fun to take a chance, put yourself out there, and reach for something that well seems really out of reach to start. Beam is scary, but as with any skill mastery comes with progression and repetition.

Cal: I’m glad my deads inspire you because your taking up gymnastics in your 40s inspires me.

Coyote: You should get a belt! And no, those aren’t uggs on my feet. They are my wretchedly ugly slippers from target. But they keep my feet warm and are just like really heavy loose socks so I still feel like I’m barefooted.

Thanks Veggie: I’m looking forward to the surgery being over. I know it will be worth it in the end. I can’t imagine how the limited hearing has been impacting him at school both academically and socially. But, he’s such a smart, tough and easy going kid. I just want for him to be all better.

Thanks Nikki! I am in love with deadlifting with right now. I’m really excited to see how much weight I can pull over time.

Kimba: Yes, this set of 205 was much stronger than my first go at that weight. I guess sometimes we are stronger than we think.

I just noticed that you are built like a shit brickhouse. <<---- That is meant to be the highest form of compliment in my neck of the woods.

Great pulls & you look fabulous in fuchsia.
