The Open Boat

LOL…Nadia! I still run in my Cortez’s. But nothing w/a K in it.

Good luck tomorrow.

Hey at least you are out there running. My 5K days have been over for years now. I really do dig the gymnastics vid. I think I will try some walkovers tomorrow. You really are an inspiration to me. Best of luck on the 5K.

Cal: Managing pain, flirting with injuries, I guess that’s all part of the game. And as for getting better at the handstands, yes–no shortcuts–for new skills it’s a matter of numbers/ repetition. Watch a toddler learning how to walk–there’s a natural progression and attempts after attempts after attempts–a sure way to progress and success. It just hurts to fall more now.

Masch: I feel okay about bailing on the half. It would’ve been nice to run it, since I trained for that distance, but I could not risk a sidelining injury. I enjoy my training too much.

Kimba: Oh Yeah on those running tights! And hell yeah on not being defeated by injuries. Because it was a sidelining injury that lead me to 5-3-1, I try really hard to look at injuries as opportunities. This little tweak is a clear reminder that I can not dabble in gymnastics. If I’m going to make it a part of my training I need to do so consistently and I need to pay attention to proper progression. That’s my plan. To have a plan.

Nikki: The specificity is based on reality–minus the cat food. I was running behind an elderly woman using a walker. And damn-it to hell if it didn’t take me FOREVER to pass her the other morning. But when I did, I was all eat my dust bitch. Okay no that didn’t happen. I smiled and said hi. Then I pictured that old lady as she likely was as a child, with hair streaming behind her, barefoot, running up a dirt road. And I thought, you are so so damn lucky that you still get to run. And because I want to be setting prs when I’m 80, I scratched to a distance I knew I could safely do.

Thanks print. THe less is more style of those cortezs are back in vogue now. So come on, you, with your doggie avatar, are good for a 5k I’m sure!

Veggie: How come you don’t run anymore? Injury? Or is just not consistent with your goals? And wow, if my little video inspired you, I’m very glad I posted it. I was suprised to find that gyms are opening their doors to adults. There are two near me that have adult open gym times. Generally, these are populated by cheerleaders trying to learn their backhandsprings, but there are some cross-fitting folks there, martial artists, and some snow boarders too. It’s a real interesting mix.

Training: I ran my 5k this am. Damn it was an odd experience to be dying at mile 2. I’m not used to running short distances at a faster pace. I’m not sure what my finishing time was, but I know it was under 25 minutes–although just barely–probably about 24:50. This means I beat my sisters 5k time of 25:09!

I didn’t notice my hip flexor while I was running. Too many other things hurt. It’s a little tight now but still better than it was on Thursday.

LMAO “I was all eat my dust bitch”
<3

I’m glad you ran, and lookie there, you beat your sister!
Glad the hip flexor is getting a bit better.

And adding gymnastics in consistently vs. dabbling is a superb idea. Only good things will come from that.

Heh, I know what you mean about the shorter distances. Although I’ve run quite a few 10Ks, I find them exhausting, whereas running on my own and at my own pace, even for further, seems much less painful. Good time, though! You’re a good five minutes faster than I am. You’re a thoroughbred to my draught horse, it seems.

Nice job on the 5K time. Gives me something to chase down…someday.

I really appreciate you sharing the fact that running hurts you. Obviously you are experienced enough to differentiate between bearable pain and sidelining pain. I’m just not yet. But considering that today my knee aches just walking around, clearly I’m out for a bit since walking, lifting and skiing are a higher priority.

I dont know why I never look here. Your posts are funny and you have cool vids. (facepalm) Gymnastics video was awesome, nice toe pointing, very elegant.

Nikki: Yep, I hope being more regular with the gymnastics will help. We’ll see.

Cal: Yeah those shorter, quicker races are exhausting. I’ll be running my first 10k, in forever, in May. That’s the toughest road distance for me by far–save for the marathon.

Kimba: My official time was 24:43. I’m really happy with that because it puts me at a 7:57 mile pace! Uggh, sorry about that blasted knee. If it’s sore walking around, I wouldn’t be running on it either. It’s great that it’s not keeping you from lifting though.

Bre: I know there are so many logs. I try to keep up with everyone, but it is difficult. Thanks for stopping in.

Coming up on CYCLE 5.

I’m too lazy today to recap cycle 4, but it was a good one. I got a pr in every lift, including MP, and pullups!

This cycle I’m adding some speed work/track work to my conditioning. I’m hopeful it doesn’t derail my strength gains–especially since the weights are creeping up on me. In fact, on all of the lifts, I’ll be working with weights that I’ve never lifted for reps before. I’m hopeful that I’ve laid a strong foundation for new progress with all those double digit rep prs I’ve been posting. Exciting times are ahead for me. And I’m feeling it.

i’m excited that you are excited! can’t wait to see your next round of PR’s. congrats on this rounds and on your run time.

That’s a very good 5K time. My best ever was 26-something. And I hated every second of it. Just can’t seem to achieve that runners’ high.

Looking forward to seeing what you’ll be lifting in your next cycle. But don’t be surprised if your cardio work eventually stalls out your strength gains. Back when I used to run/bike regularly, that happened to me and I had to make choices. I think we know what I chose.

Nice new avi, BTW.

HA!! To the Cortez’s being back in vogue. They never were out of vogue for me. Been wearing them now damn near 30yrs.

Congrats on all the pr’s you got on cycle 4. I know you like the BBB. Have you noticed a increase in your strength?

X2 w/Snap… Killer avi.

I also like the new avi. Very powerful. Nice job on the 5K, that is an impressive time. Regarding your question about me and running: I injured my left hip 5 years ago by running compulsively during a “rough patch.” Decided to focus on weight training instead. I have dabbled in interval sprinting w/no problem.

I also am confident that I could trail run on a casual basis, but I could never log milage like I used to…
Thanks for the info, I might have to check around for some open gymnastics time for grown-ups. Gymnastics was my first love. I did it exclusively until I was about 12.

Exciting times around here! I’ll be watching you.

Track work/speed work is actually recommended by lots of strength coaches for conditioning as well as for a nice ass. Its the longer running distances that seem to get dissed in those discussions, but those haven’t hindered you yet. When I’m back at the running, I fully intend to work on sprinting in order reap both speed and aesthetic benefits.

Thank you Alexus.

Thanks Snap. I’ve spent the last few months trying to decide which of my activities to prioritize. I’ve given up. I want it all. Balancing the lifting, the running, and the gymnastics makes me feel athletic and generally physically capable. I think that is what I’m going for more than anything. I’m hooked on a feeling.

Print: I really like BBB. My lifts are improving as is my work capacity. But the best thing about BBB (squats and DLs in particular) is that it is testing my mettle, which is also getting stronger and which is by far the biggest pay off for me.

Veggie: Gymnastics was my first love too. I quit at 13. Hope you find a gym.

Kimba: I know speed work is good for me. But it adds another hard day to my already jam packed schedule. Those 4 or 5 mile runs are really not hard on my body, and I don’t think they hurt my lifting. Adding a tough track work out to my schedule on the otherhand could require an adaptive period. We shall see.

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Training today 3-3-3 bench. I set my training max at 102.5. So, on my 5-3-1 week I’ll be benching 97.5 lbs for reps–very close to my max of 100lbs.

Bench
barx10
65x5
72.5x3
82.5x3
92.5 x12 (+3 rep pr). I was very happy with this. My right leg had the serious shakes during this set, which was distracting as hell, but I felt strong and +3 rep pr is huge for me at that weight.

BBB sets: 65x10; 75x10x2; 70x10x2

PUllups: BWx10; 25lbsx3x2 (missed the third rep on my third set).

Bent over Barbell Rows: 45x10; 65x5; 75x5; 85x5; 90x5; 95x5; 100x5

Prowler: 50lbsx some distance x 6. (trying to get some positive blood flow to the hip flexor)

Holy crap, +3 PR on bench?
very close to my max of 100lbs.
Dahlin, after 92.5 x 12, 100 is no longer your max.

You’re killing the pull-ups as well, vedy nice.

Nice pressing, Nadia! Yeah, I get it that a tough speed day might upset the delicate balance. What about only a moderately hard speed day? No need to kill yourself…ooops, I forgot who I was talking to. Never mind.

Nice pressing you will be crushing thru 100 and higher in no time at all. Love the weighted pullups - but I am huge fan of anyone that can do a pullup - so good work, Imma fan!!!

Great pressing, congrats on the +3 rep PR. Nikki is right. When are you gonna retest/recalculate your max?

Sounds like you should be doing Crossfit. People diss it but it’s very effective unless you’re a male bodybuilder who wants to be big over everything else.

I have nothing to add cept’ you’re smart & graceful.

I love your explanation!
