The 'New Year Crowd' Has Arrived!

HAAA! Great thread. It makes me smile to know that I am not alone in my loathing of working out at the gym in January. The good news is that 50% of the resolutioners will be gone by then end of next week, the rest will be gone in the next 2 weeks. I have nothing against newbs, as we were all once newbs, but the resolutioners are a completely different sort. They use January 1 as though it is some magical day that will all of the sudden wake them from their slumbering slothfulness and give them the power to succeed. These people that use the new year as their excuse to start working out NEVER succeed.[/quote]

There are always a few people who will stick to it.

I used the start of a school year as my excuse to start working out

I actually went to the gym on monday, was doing squats first, got up to 405lb and asked one of my friends to give me a spot, though he is not he biggest guy he gets the job done and he is a great spot, so as soon as i unrack the weight, this tall skinny guy pushes my friend out the way and says i got it, so now i got this guy giving me a spot, i was just hoping he knew what he was doing. I get to rep 4 and obviously with 405lb on my back i was not as explosive on the 4th rep, so he decided to help me out… By grabbing my elbows and pushing them up, you can guess i barely got up because the bar was rolling, so i had to finish the rep and tackle the rack to prevent my death.

I was so pissed, i just stopped doing squats and started doing some sumo deadlifts, the guy by now was no where to be seen, i guessed that with my reaction he just left. Well once i get to 405lb once again, rep number 3 and mr fantastic is somehow behind me, shaking his head yes, like he was my coach or some shit. I asked him what the fuck he was doing, he replied " Yo Brah, im was giving you a spot just in case" … I asked him how he was going to spot my sumo deadlifts and he said he would have figured something out if i needed help. I did some abs and went home, decided to deload…

spotting a deadlift. Interesting. Maybe he would have thrown himself under the bar if you dropped it, you should have tested him on it.

Everything about that pisses me off. If you run across this guy again, can you kill him? Tell him it’s from me.

I refuse to believe that this story is true. I know that it is, I’m not calling you a liar. But if I let myself believe it, I will lose a little bit more faith in humanity. Which is not good because I don’t have much left.

Yeah…I’m not buying the story either…

Yea i know crazy shit, to give you an image, the spot was like i was performing DB presses or something, and he spotted me in that manner. It sucks that they usually leave the decline bench for the abs next to the rack, as well as most of the chest machines and the smith machines, the area gets packed … SPECIALLY on chest mondays…

And this is not the first time this has happened, one time i asked the biggest guy in my range of vision (not saying much considering i train at planet fitness) to give me a spot on the squat 450lb (old ass PR)and as i go down he places his hands under the bar,

Exactly the way you would spot a bench, i just yelled “i got it”, and he took hsi hands off let me finish my rep. That’s the last time i make the assumption that people know how to spot a squat.

The penultimate of all bicep exercises!

What is wrong with bicep curls?

Nothing, I just found the phrase, “awesome curls” amusing.

Tonight there were three 15 or 16 year old skinny boys basically doing awesome curls and admiring their cut biceps in the mirror right next to the squat rack where I was working. One of my co-workers was spotting me and decided to show off a bit between my reps. It is our job to clean up the weight room and there happened to be a bar with two 45s on it lying around, so my friend decided to do a one hand snatch with it. Those kids jizzed their pants and let out an audible WOW. All 3 were doing deadlifts with 135 when I left, so a good deed was done.
We also got a little girl who came in to get “toned up” doing squats with 65lbs. I’m having fun with the noobs.

That had me laughing. Nothing like quick thinking.

Also, good call on the deload week. I’m resting my back this week (pulled muscle from T-bar rows), so I’m sure to save some agony. Sucks though, working out at the university gym is always packed through the end of February, usually until spring break. Worst thing is, with 200 people, it gets up to 95 degrees in the gym and I sweat over every piece of equipment.

How exactly are you supposed to spot a squat? In the starting strength guide it says if you’re going to spot the squat with one guy, he should push up on the bar if you get stuck. Isn’t that what this guy was doing?

Not busting balls, I actually don’t know how to spot a squat.

Makes you wish you didn’t go to the gym, huh? I’ve seen people spotting each other doing leg presses and smith machine benches. It makes my day.

What I usually do is put my around under the squatter’s armpits and if he starts to collapse I’ll catch him. Alternatively I just help unload the bar by pushing it onto the locks if they’re having trouble.

x 2

That also puts you close enough to give a little back support to get the weight up.

Good news is that it looks like noobs don’t think you can work out on Fridays. I give it 10 more days and things should be back to normal. This monday will suck because those who slacked will recommit before they quit.

It’s very depressing though, I mean I see all these people working out and they look miserable doing it, like they really HATE it. I can’t imagine how they could not find training fun, and if they don’t why they even bother to do it.

To each their own I guess. I don’t know if I would be doing it if I didn’t love every minute of it. To the casual observer, however, I probably don’t look like I’m having fun. Squatting, my face goes so red it looks like blood is going to spray out my ears and I look angry as hell from the effort. Someone watching might no realise just how much fun that is for me.
