The Never-Too-Late Tattoo Parlor

I loved that video. Gymnastics looks so damned fun! I for one am extremely jealous of the fun that you get to have with that. Nitpick on yourself all you like (and I know you will and are happy doing it) but I’m still green.

How do you know you tore it? Did you have an MRI? People often say they “tore” something. But it’s usually just a strain, sprain, or impingement. Tears are serious and only definitively diagnosed via MRI.

Nadia: Loved the video. My daughter is mentally struggling with her cartwheel on beam. She took a bad spill a week ago and is now suffering serious anxiety as a result. Her coach forced her back onto the beam after the fall, where she proceeded to do her routine through sobs. She needs that element for competition soon. I think the cartwheel looks harder to do than the back walkover because of the sideways, rather than centering, aspect of the move.

I love the gymnastics video. You’re so graceful. I was always the chubby kid who couldn’t even master the cartwheel. So, I admire those that have combined grace with athleticism.

As for double goals, I don’t think it’s as impossible as people make it out to be. John Romaniello just came out with a cool superhero program that promises to give you strength, endurance, size and fatloss in a 12 week program. So, with the right programming, I say you got this!

Heh, also chubby kid who couldn’t master the cartwheel - but it’s possible to learn (although I still maintain that me doing gymnastics is like riding a dressage test on an elephant). It’s unfortunate I’ve not been able to go to my gymnastics classes due to this foot thing. A lot of the drills and warm-up stuff requires toe flexion which is the one thing I’m not really supposed to do. Fuck and suck.

Loved the video anyways. The beam looks tough. I love your determination and I covet your mobility and flexibility.

your gymnastics vids are so damn beautiful. the grace, the pointed toes.

wish I could dress you up and take pictures. In my mind your like a grown woman-fairy: airy, graceful and yet strong.

You’re right, I need an MRI, but not going to with no insurance. Just going off of what other torn muscles/tendons and ligaments I’ve suffered. Just have to ride this one out.

Nadia - More power to you with what you are trying to achieve. Doing 1000 times better then the ones who just talk, and sit on the couch stuffing their face with Twinkies.

Also, can finally view your video. Damn… that hurt to watch in the middle of the video where you are lifting one leg straight up behind you. lol Looking good. Keep it up!

Oh hell yes! I love when you post your gymnastics vids - they make me so happy. You’re so elegant. And my god, your legs look so strong! Such a power house.

The beam does look tough! And treacherous, you certainly have to be of a certain mindset to be a gymnast. That’s for sure!

And your son’s 6 pack is hilarious!

Anywho, training looks good - nice running! Keep at it, woman!

ps. thanks for the Romaniello rec Sarah!

Awesome sentiment. I’ve always found gymnastics to be one of the most impressive and aesthetically pleasing things to see, essentially physical poetry that’s pretty fucking cool.

your son’s sixpack is awesome.

they sound like super active happy kids, nice work.
your gymnastic bar work is amazing its very cool you get to play with that still.

turns out that i can view your vids… eventually. that was amazing! you look so strong and graceful. the handstand looked effortless.

Snap: This is a tough post for me to respond to. So, if I over-step, I apologize. I remember standing at the end of the vault runway with tears in my eyes and being forced to go. I’m carrying baggage.

With any new skill a gymnast must generally learn two things: (1) how to do it, and (2) how to safely miss. Ideally, she should receive direct instruction on both.

There is nothing about a cartwheel that should cause your daughter to have a scary tumble, but a lack of body awareness. She can fix this by hammering out the reps. The mistake I think a lot of coaches make is demanding that the gymnast complete these reps on the high beam. That’s counter-productive. She needs to do this learning on a beam level where she can churn out as many reps as she can in a short amount of time. The confidence she gains on the low beam will transfer to confidence on the high beam. The confidence comes from experience, from the repetition model, from practice hitting and safely missing.

Your daughter is a smart girl, her fear is rationally based. She knows she can do that cartwheel. But she also knows that no one is perfect. She understands that if she fell that way once, there is a very real possibility that she could fall in a similar fashion.

Again, what she needs to learn is how to fall. She clearly hasn’t done that enough. She can learn that on the low beam. She should learn that on the low beam.

Patch: Squatting to adele yielded me a big pr. When you don’t have training partners, and music is your only company, the right song does make a difference.

Kimba: I always loved beam. It rewards hardwork and practice more than any other event.

Sbmart: Because I’m not at the elite level of anything, and really am just in search of a feeling of athleticisim, I tell myself that my diverse goals compliment one another. I also think they protect me from injury somewhat. If I wasn’t lifting, I would run to the point of injury. Without gymnastics, I’d lose mobility to strength. …

Cal: Thanks. ANd sorry about your foot. I’m glad to see you’re still able to practice your handstand though. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck continuing to work on that skill alone.

Frenchie: Love your posts! Thanks.

Koubantor: Sucks about the insurance situation. I’ve been really pushing the flexibility lately, stretching every night. I’m still not where I want to be, but it’s coming back, and I’ve made clear progress here.

Masch: Thanks. I hardly feel graceful at times, but I’m working on it and getting better!

Thanks BearB! I like the intensity and enthusiasm that you have going on over in your log!

Kmcnyc: Thanks. Both my kids swim and do gymnastics year round. It’s really tough to balance their activities, but I think those two sports will give them a good foundation of body awareness and strength.

Alexus: I’ve been working on the handstand almost every night–just a couple here and there–but it’s made a big difference. Little bits of work add up.

So, I’ve stuck with the diet through the week. Weight has stayed steady at 120-121. I feel pretty good. Obviously, I’m eating plenty of food so I’m not hungry and I don’t feel deprived. Unfortunately, I still think it would be very dangerous for me to eat refined sugar at this point. It’s my drug.

DLS later.

Your video is beautiful. Is your daughter in gymnastics? If she takes after you in any sort with that sport her potential is huge. I’ll echo what Snap said about the cartwheels. I think those and full turns caused the most trouble for me, and they’re meant to be the beginner skills. I’d rather do back handsprings any day.

Good work on sticking to the diet. Do you feel any different energy wise, or workout wise? Kill those DLs today.

^5
For sticking to good eats! Knocks Nadia down, helps her back up

DLs

deficit: 145x5x3 I was supposed to do 155, but in addition to being weak I also had trouble adding.

Lula: My daughter, ella, started gymnastics at 9 last summer. She’ll be 10 soon. She’s doing well and has moved up to the pre-team.

Cartwheels really? I was more afraid of going backwards. It’s probably not fair for me to judge the diet right now. I’ve been kind of out of sorts all week.

Mim: Your post made me laugh out loud right when I needed to. I just finished deadlifting, and it didn’t go well. I want to blame the diet for my suckiness today, tear open a bag of cookies, eat them all and get my bloat back on, but that would be an overreaction to a single bad workout right? An act of self-sabotage, which I will come to regret later? Sigh.

Working sets:
145x5
165x5
185x5 (this felt unusually heavy, which caused me to worry, which caused me to seek reassurance by maxing out when I was not supposed to)

225x1
245x1 fuck.
265x miss x I don’t know how many times x I couldn’t even break the floor.

Tighented my belt one notch today and took off 20lbs from my DL. I was supposed to do GHR and HLR, but I needed a break. I’ll go back and do them later.

I’m just off this week for some reason. Burned out at work. Busy. Blah.

Tomorrow my kids have a swim meet. It will be Henry’s first one. I’m really looking forward to that. And the weekend.

^I am now going to institute the toe-crack prior to every pr attempt. It was a struggle but still a strong pull. Don’t beat yourself up over having one off day. 265 will come around soon enough.

you had a busy week thats all.

nice socks btw, there hot. I think you can have a couple cookies, not the whole bag.

it will take me some time to be able to view your vids. (sometimes they load - sometimes they stop a little way in. i’ll keep trying and they will play eventually).

sounds like the gymnastics is for you what the olympic lifting is for me. a way of working on mobility / control of movement that compliments the strength training. i’ll admit the thought of the high beam freaked me out a lot. then when you got your low beam i was like ‘oh - i see how you work up to high beam by mastering the skills in a safer way’. like how you can practice oly lifting with broomsticks or with light weights so you learn to safely miss which gives you confidence for the real deal.

congrats on sticking with your diet. sounds wise for you to avoid refined sugar right now. potato does that for me.

Thanks for the gymnastics feedback, Nadia. My daughter trains her cartwheel on the floor beam and low beam all the time. She just happened to be on the high beam when she took the bad fall.

DL sucks. I hate it. Even though I’m doing well at it right now. I swear, it’s all in the head. And if you’ve had a rough, out-of-it week, I’m not surprised you couldn’t pull super well.

Hang in there.
