The Most Impressive, Well-Rounded Athletes?
WhiteFlash wrote:
Oh, no question. Didn’t mean for it to sound like I disagreed with that. The op asked about all around athleticism, not combine performance. I’ve played ball with several NBA & NFL players. Hell, during their off-season I play ball with most of the Texans starting defense a couple of times a week. I’m not saying these dudes aren’t athletic. I’m saying that in terms of ALL AROUND ATHLETIC ABILITY, basketball players have 'em beat.
In general, hoop requires jumping/sprinting/cutting-on-a-dime/move-your-feet agility. And then there’s the shooting aspect, which is pure skill.

In general, certain football positions require all of the above PLUS explosive power/strength, MINUS the shooting ability (obviously)

Give the above, I’d say that hoop produces more of the impressive, well-rounded athletes but it’s those freak DE, freak TE-types (Ware, Peppers, Tuck, JPP, Watt, Matthews, Mario Williams, Gonzalez, Gronk, Jimmy Graham) that are actually THE MOST impressive of all, period.

I don’t necessarily disagree. You forgot to add dribbling to that list. Doing all of that while having the body awareness and hand-eye coordination to dribble the ball and get where you want is no joke. The guys who are 6’6"+, 280 and run 4.8 40’s are truly freakish because guys that size shouldn’t be able to move like that. But, we’re talking about well rounded, not freaks. As a side, I met Mario Williams a handful of times. He isn’t near as stocky in person as you’d expect, but he is a legit 6’6"+ and has ridiculously long arms.

In all seriousness this is what crossfit tries to find out with their games. And I think we’d see it if the prize was greater than $250k.

Sorry but these guys are screened more than pilots, does it occur yes, does it occur to what you are alluding to is ludicrous
D, you’re being a li’l naive, brother. I’d bet over 90% of these dudes are juiced to the gills. 6’4", 270lb dudes don’t run 4.6 40’s without some “assistance”.
WF you forget what I do for a living, I run drug screening for many fortune 500 companies in the US. Yes can it happen, yes can these guys try to cheat it. But sorry I just do not think it happens to the level people want to accuse. These are the elite athletes in the country for a whole nation these are the cream of the crop for 32 teams. Sorry as a guy on the inside I just do not see it as possible.
But these dudes know exactly when they’re being tested. It’s pretty easy to circumnavigate the test. Every now and again someone will fuck up (Cushing, Merriman, etc…), and every now and again the NFL will “suspend” someone do they can look at the American public and say “look, we’re on top of this!!!” And their scapegoat(s) sir down for a few games. I know you don’t wasn’t to believe it, man. But it’s the facts. The game is about being bigger, stronger and faster. If you didn’t, you’d be taking a knife to a gun fight.

Agreed on the occasional scapegoating being very occasional.

Its been said before that America is completely fine with turning a blind eye to steroid use re: NFL

Essentially, we like our “modern-day gladiators” being the freaks that they are, however unnaturally, and let’s not ruin the game the way baseball’s been ruined.

Sorry to be a legal drug screen there are rules and prior knowledge is breaking those rules. Because the guys have a potential to lose $ they cant just try to catch “Scapegoats”. Look at the long legal battles of some of the banded substance testing, if the drug screening program for the NFL was not top notch they would get crucified in the courts.

I have heard X players talk about this, and I am not talking about the drug screening program for the 80’s and 90’s. Im talking about now.

I completely forgot about crossfit athletes.

Yeah, 'cause a bunch of guys who are juiced to the gills are gonna be truthful about what they’re doing. How about this, aside from the current and ex-pros I’ve met, I know a kid who plays running back on a D1 program here in town. According to him, EVERYONE is on something, includin himself. Nature doesn’t produce natural Vernon Davis’s. He’d be a big, strong, fast dude no matter what, but he didn’t get like that without “help”. Assuming otherwise is just naive.

I can only speak on the drug screening process, are there ways to cheat of course there are.

My take from your post was about in some way the NFL facilitates the NFL player, never said these guys are not taking anything. They just know ways to get away with it, unaided by the screening companies. I dont have privy to when they screen, these guys only work 6 months out of the year also.

To be fair, the very top crossfitters are staggeringly fit. Unfortunately, the lower 99.999% contain some of the biggest douchebags on the planet

No worries WF you know I am a patient man.

Haha, that you are, bud. You see the Texans last night? Don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but they look damn good.

Yea man strong work, on an ugly field of play.

Boxing.

Don’t they have some sort of software that you can input numbers and does a large number to trials to see who comes out on top? Deadlist Warrior anyone…

I think there is and isn’t a overall perfect athlete. Each lack a certain skill or strength that will only make him or her great for their respected sport. MJ one of the most regarded baseball players tried to play baseball and how long did that last? The sports that transfer over the best to others is hockey and baseball. Most sports have a object manipulation (bat and stick).

Not saying basketball has it place because it really does. Mostt think because they have amazing verts that they are awesome athletes, most of these guys jump 12-16" and slam dunk. Doesn’t Yao Ming have to jump like 6" or less? However, their VO2max must be very impressive for massive guys like themselves. More so, once someone has to jump 40+" to slam dunk then I’ll be impressed.

If we are stating a survival situation I think the answer would be different and interesting to say the least.
