They still have a tremendous reach for a moderately sized country thanks largely to their colonial ties. While the US may be the biggest reason people learn English now, most of the countries in the world who have it as an official language do so because the Brits pwned them in the past.
Once they stop paying that tax on their new TVs, this race is over.

I stand by my original statement. The American Philological Society and the Philological Society of England both advocated spelling reform. Both pre-dated the OED. Americans embraced some of the reforms, including dropping the “u” in words like “favour”. Brits did not.
