The Man In The Cellar

OHMYGODIAMGOINGTODIE!!! What was I thinking? I’m not even going to wax nostalgiac at this point. Here is what I put myself thru.

5 December 2010
Evening

Deadlifts
275 x 10 x 10

Dumbbell Rows
65 x 12 x 2
65 x 15 x 1
65 x 20 x 1
*This is the first time in a long time I’ve been able to do d-bell rows with more than 30lbs.

Pullups
BW x 8 x 5

Barbell Rows
135 x 15 x 5
*Don’t know what I was thinking on these. I’ll regret it, though. From the deads to this…I’ve a lot of regret coming my way!

So you’re just going to beat the hell out of yourself and be so sore on the flight home that you’ll need a bedpan to piss in. I like it. Haha.

Killer training man, always intense and brutal in here.

Intense and brutal is typically how I like it. Don’t know about the bedpan, though. I usually don’t wake up until it’s almost time to land. The beauty of not sleeping the night prior, and sleeping pills.

I was amused and surprised this morning upon waking up. Amused because it took me half-an-hour to actually stand up (was a bit out of sorts), but the surprise came in the form of running for almost 20 minutes straight. And a decent pace, to boot. From there, it was heavybag work. 20 minutes of kicks and knees. A milestone occurred, as I am able to do direct ab-work, although for a very limited number.

I felt good about this. So good that I went ahead and got my height/weight checked, and then went thru the retarded tape test. I was well under my limit, as I figured I would be. Good times. Tonight is shoulders, and the dude that trained with me on Saturday is talking about joining me today. We’ll see…

The pic was me as of early last week. Just to show how rough I’d been looking out here… The pic that follows is from Friday.

Last Friday.

And these are the two ladies I’ve been training.

Very nice work man. Enjoy some R&R, you’ve earned it.

Awesome night’s work! That’s the best way to describe this evening’s training! The shoulder workout was short, but intense, and then the ladies’ boxing session was out-fucking-standing! These two put the dudes in the gym to shame! I really got a sense of their progress when another group of guys started their own little class. You know it’s bad when the two ladies, who are just beginning can point out everything that was wrong with what the guys were doing. I won’t go into detail, but I will say that if it ever came down to who would win in a boxing smoker between the two groups, Allysa and Luna would put on a clinic.

For my work tonight, the buddy from the last chest workout joined me again for a shoulder workout. I reduced the amount of exercises and sets after the main lift, as our breaks were only as long as we took under the bar.

6 December 2010
Evening

Military Press
145 x 10 x 7, then 135 x 10 x 3 (the shortened rest periods really took a toll!)

Shrugs
135 x 12 x 5

Shoulder Press (Dumbbells)
55 x 10 x 5

Not the greatest as far as gains go, but it was still enough that the two of us fogged up an entire section of mirrors! We brought the funk!

I’ll post some pics in a lil bit. Time for chow!!

I like cleaned up Beast better

The girls look like they can stand their ground!

They say that those in the military can sleep anywhere, but not me. I don’t trust the guys around me not to mess with me in my sleep, so I’m always guarded and can’t fall asleep. I was up the whole flight back from Kuwait to NY to Miramar when I flew home. It was exhausting!

Yes, Main. You and everybody else! I was threatened quite a bit by folks back home when they saw the pic with the hair. I figured I would give a little…

And yes, once they loosen up a bit, they are stronger than they think. Especially Allysa, the seated one. She has got some power. Luna, the closer one, is a bit tighter with her punches…more crisp. Definitely a pleasure working with them.

I can understand that completely! I’m never one to be played with when I’m asleep, although, there is one 15 y/o girl who terrorized me back in Germany. Between taking pictures, playing with my ears, and making me slap myself, it was pretty bad. And I didn’t know about it til I woke up. Teenagers are the spawn of the devil! lol. The only flight I’ve ever been unable to sleep on was the flight back to the states from Korea. 14 hours of ONE baby crying the entire time!!! I had even popped a few sleeping pills! Talk about being miserable!

Now that I’ve finally got the pics uploaded… a few snapshots of the ladies training.

Allysa

This is Luna. It’s a lil fuzzy as she was moving, and my camera is old.

I NEVER sleep on a plane. While flying coach it’s a little hard to read or do anything when your stuck in the middle seat of a 12 hour red eye. I lost count of how many super strenght tylenols I downed hopping to knock myself out.

This morning had a very endearing start, if I may use that word and keep my Man Card. I decided to go easy this morning, so I just worked the heavybag lightly, just working on movement. As I was warming up my legs and hips with some kicks, a First Sergeant walks over and watches. Whatever. Then he sits in front of the heavybag area to watch…great. So, I ignore him and continue throwing my kicks. I’m remaining loose and not going full force at all. Maybe half-speed. Then it happens.

“You’re telegraphing your kicks. You shouldn’t be telegraphing like that.” He tells me.

“I’m just warming up right now, Top.” I tell him. To give you a description before I continue, this First Sergeant (1SG) is pretty up there in age. And the air about him radiates that age. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a very fit older dude, but he’s still old in his movements and mannerisms.

“What you need to do in close quarters is get in there quick, like this.” Here he proceeds to throw an elbow that looked like an old grandmother trying Tae Bo would throw, and he follows it up with the most horrendous kick I’ve ever seen. I thought he was going to break his hip as just picking his leg up that high (two feet off the ground) looked like it hurt him. This was the endearing moment. I could only think to myself “Aww…that’s cute. Grandpa is trying to rekindle his youth!”

After that display, he nodded his head and walked away. I was still in awe of what I’d just witnessed. Then I continued to work the bag for the next 30 minutes.

Now, this evening, after a bit of blue falcon action and hypocrisy from select individuals, and after finally giving my class on the changes with the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, I made my way to the gym to train, motivate, then train some more. After working with the ladies on kicks, I went to work.

7 December 2010
Evening

Barbell Curls
75 x 10 x 10

OH Tricep Extension
95 x 10 x 10

Close-grip Bench Press
135 x 10 x 1
135 x 12 x 1
135 x 15 x 3

Barbell Curls w/pronated grip
65 x 10 x 4

By the end of this workout, I found myself in a pretty low state of mind. Not sure why I started feeling down. I’m thinking I’ll probably sleep in tomorrow morning.

Gotta love the salty Senior enlisted guys, right? They’re just always so…old!

You should have kicked him, just to see if he’d see it coming.

“Telegraph THAT, Top!”

safe travels Beastie.

Happy Homecoming!!!

It’s good to be back! And I hate not being able to train how I like during travels. Makes me very antsy! That lil tidbit dawned on me while in Kandahar. So, I did what I felt was needed during my wait to fly…hit the gym!

9 December 2010
“Bloodwork!”

Bench Press
135 x 10 x 1
135 x 12 x 1
135 x 15 x 1
135 x 18 x 1
135 x 20 x 1

Barbell Rows
115 x 15 x 5

Behind the Neck Press
75 x 20 x 5

Alt. Dumbbell Curls
30 x 30 x 4

Alt Dumbbell Tri. Ext.
30 x 15 x 4

That was the last workout I was able to get in before the real fun began. Didn’t dare hit the gym in Kuwait, as time was short, and spare clothes were non-existent! So, for two days, I was left to the will of my mind and body…way too much energy built up! But, I did manage to sleep the entire way from Kuwait to Germany, then from Germany to Atlanta! Jet-lag was just another word to me.

After downing a 16 ounce steak, 44 oz. of Yuengling, and a huge margarita, it was time to shop for some clothes! I forget how frenetic the pace is here in the states…especially during the holidays. It was almost daunting, however, being in uniform, most people either moved out of my way with a surprising bit if defference, or they came up to me to shake my hand. With my “adopted” mother beside me, bragging about me, it was surreal. But, two hours later, and many shopping bags filled, I came back to the house, and crashed. Interesting sleep, but once 4 am hit, it was time to do a lil bit of work.

13 December 2010
Morning

Pushups x 20; Half-situps x 20 (FUCK YEAH!!!); Squats x 20, done in a circuit for 5 rounds.

The abs were a booster! Felt good as hell to be able to do them again. Hopefully tonight, I’ll be able to visit my old stomping grounds, and get some sparring in! That will definitely take a bit of edge off… Especially since I’m under the same roof as a not-unattractive young, single lady… Trying to behave for now.

not sure if I should tell you to behave or not…

glad you home. enjoy every minute of it.
