She has amazing super-powers.

Skye, that is hysterical! Thanks for the laugh to start out my day.

Sometimes when you ask, you receive. My previous avatar was abs.

That’s awesome! Do you do a lot of direct ab work or no?

deja – thanks, that tied with MIM’s comment is by far the nicest thing said to me today.

MIM – I hate direct ab work with a burning passion. One of the reasons I pay a trainer every week is to make me do abs. I do think its useful, but left to myself I wouldn’t hit this very often.

great new avatar too!

Today’s training was – objectively – mixed. But the good was VERY good and the bad did not outweigh it.

Back Squats to 4 risers plus a step
Bar 1 x 10 warmup
75# 1 x 10
85# 1 x 10
90# 1 x 10
95# 1 x 10 ← Rep PR +7
65# 1 x 20 ← Rep PR +5

The good here is that the weight FINALLY felt light again. There was very little forward lean – maybe on 1 rep and I fixed it right quick. Upper body was good and tight. I worked with the knee cave issue by turning my toes out a little more (a Meat suggestion) and focusing my attention on the outside of my feet (also a Meat suggestion).

There was probably some knee cave during the 95# set, but nothing horrible. And I managed mostly to squat up and down, with little of what I call “butt wiggle” to my dominant right side.

If I feel good on Friday nite (my next squat day) I would LOVE to break 100# at legal depth.

Seated Overhead Press
Bar 2 x 10, 1 x 7 (failed on 8, same as last time)

These aren’t getting better quickly. I think I’ll take a further page out of the 5/3/1 book’s 2-day workout schedule, and do overhead presses on deadlift day with some sort of assistance exercises for this lift. Its not progressing at all the way I’m training it.

Lunges
30 each leg with 2 10# plates

Bench Press – TOTAL. FAIL. I knew as soon as I got the bar ready for my first rep that I was totally fucked.
70# 1 x 6
65# 1 x 5

The weight felt so heavy. Did I tire out my upper body that much on the overhead presses?!? Jeez.

Incline Dumbbell Press – The total fail CONTINUES
20#s 1 x 13 (failed on 14)

Seriously??? Failing on 20s??? ARGGHHH!!!

Back Extensions
BW 2 x 10 reps <–first time doing this exercise ever. I was persuaded by the recent glute article and by the 5/3/1 book touting this as a good assistance exercise. It was kinda fun. Obviously I need to weight it next time.

Dips
BW 1 x 19 (fail on 20) 1 x 2 (fail on 3)

These aren’t really improving either. My goal is to do 40 bodyweight dips. No real training reason, I just want to.

Some HS machine work, lat pulldowns (independent grip) and high rows (independent grip) weight set at 40# 1 set each of unknown reps

Some sort of weird cable curl thing for one set of high reps

Plank 1 x 2 min.
Russian twists BW only 1 x 2 min.

I was just so happy about the squats, that the rest of this training day was just extra gravy.

OHPs are very demanding on your system, put 'em after your bench if the bench is what you want to focus on.

Nice squat PR - time to put more weight on the bar ;-}

I am glad to know that I can blame the OHP’s for my crappy bench day. Thanks dog! More weight coming right up!

In order of priority, I am working on:

  1. Deadlift
  2. Squat
  3. Overhead Press
  4. Bench

Bench is last, fer sure. Maybe someday I’ll care more. But I LOVE to deadlift. I LOVE to squat and I LOVE throwing the bar over my head. Bench? Eh. Its OK. I don’t feel the love.

By the way, I have to share this. While waiting for my trainer to take a leak (no, not in front of me, dude had to run to the men’s room) I saw this chica come into the weight room and GASP! head to the squat rack.

So. excited! She proceeded to put a 45# plate and a smaller plate (probably a 5# or a 10#) on each side of the bar. Awesome!

Then…

She quarter-squatted. Maybe not even. For maybe 5 reps. With a big-ass pussy pad.

What the fuck?!?!? I was utterly disappointed.

I mean, is there any point at all to quarter-squatting?

P.S. Thanks deja for the comment on the new avatar. With the changes to the Hub today, the old one was too small and looked like crap.

Kimba,
Nice squats! Test your 1 rm max for us next time?

I’m curious why you did so many reps on the incline dbs?

Like the new avatar too. I <3 your upper back especially.

If’n I’m feeling good on Friday, I’ll do just that.

Once a week I pay a trainer to work me out, and today was the day. I insist on the squats, but then the workout is largely his choice. This entertains me (I’m an attention whore…no…really!), gets me to try new things I wouldn’t otherwise try and I find it very fun NOT to have to plan one workout per week.

Maybe this isn’t the best training protocol, but lifting is largely about fun for me.

I had failed bigtime on bench, and I think he was just trying to burn out some reps with the dumbbells.

Thanks! One thing I’ve never had in my life before now is a decent back and shoulders. I’m still frankly surprised to see them in the mirror.

Claire, fyi your ex is now doing gay porn. It’s bad.

I do like your avatar.

I have the same feeling about girls in the gym – is she gonna lift? is she gonna lift? Wait – naah, she’s just going to putz around.
But I’ve done some colossal form screw-ups in my time too – the high squats, the round-back deadlifts, the bench that didn’t touch my chest – and if she’s in there, has a goal, and is willing to take advice, she’ll learn better. (Maybe even from you.)

while the gay porn isn’t a surprise*, the choice of shirt is. he always had much better taste when we were together.

*how else do you explain living with me/sleeping next to me and turning down every sexual advance i made for two straight weeks? boggles my mind.

kimba- hells yeah for your squat pr’s! im sorry the bench didnt work out so well, but the OHP sounds like its gonna come along soon!

This is simply impossible to believe. Was he dead? Did you check for a pulse?

Awesome, we’ll be waiting to hear how you… KICK my ass.
Let me know how you like what the opress does for your shoulders.

I have the same feelings about benching…
