Let me know how you like what the opress does for your shoulders.

Or how you kick mine. My shoulders feel a bit used this morning.

Please tell me that after this two weeks of deprivation you kicked his ass to the curb and replaced him promptly. That’s just not right.

Thanks for the encouragement! It seems that sometimes progress in lifts isn’t linear…it comes in fits and starts. Nothing for awhile and then a really good day.

I’m glad its not just me.

Also, I’ve always done better with a narrow laser-like focus than trying to spread out my attention on lots of things. I’m working the squats and deads first, and the rest of the stuff later on when I’m happier with those lifts.

Good work on the squats, fixing my squat issues will be the death of me.

The deprivation comments are kind of amusing as well.

nope. he accused me of cheating on him, then left to go to a “meeting.” we could talk about that drama all day, but i’ll leave it at this; it was the most thorough mindfuck i’ve ever experienced!

honestly… that kind of progress is the kind i’ve seen most… with myself and others. i don’t know how to explain it, nor do i care. i take comfort in knowing that the gains WILL come, as long as i keep pouring myself into it!

keep chuggin away, lady!

ever use a box when squating?

Kimba, did you say somewhere you studied Russian for two years?

Joe, we strive for amusement around here as we hammer away at difficult lifting endeavors. Never a dull moment!

I see…well, I’m confident that you won’t be making that particular mistake again. Some lessons need only be learned one time.

The longer I lift, the more comfortable I am with just keeping the faith and grinding through tough training days, knowing that one day the clouds will part, the sun will shine and the birds will sing.

In place of a “real” box, I’ve been using 4 risers plus a step. Frankly, the best use for a Reebok step EVER.

One day I will actually try a “box squat” as opposed to just squatting to the box for a depth check. However, right now my squat focus is to claw my way back up to my former PR of 120# – but this time to legal depth.

Yep, in college. Many moons ago. And, boy did I suck at it!

Yesterday I did jack squat. Well, I did foam roll. I foam roll pretty much every evening.

But, I had planned to do some tabata style interval training, or a complex or a bodyweight circuit…you get the picture.

I trained on Wednesday, and I train today (squat day!) and I just felt I needed a day to recover in between. Honestly, it takes this body longer to get over a day of hard training than it would for someone…cough…younger.

So, I asked myself what I was hoping to accomplish training intervals. I am in the lucky position of not needing to lose fat which is, I think, the point of all “cardio”. Long story short, I couldn’t come up with a reason. And thusly sat on my ass instead. Went out to dinner (roast chicken, mashed potatoes, bacon-braised greens – bacon makes everything better!).

Today I came across this Eric Cressey article:

http://www.elitefts.com/documents/int_training.htm

In it, he talks about putting together dynamic flexibility circuits that aren’t designed to “toast” you, but to get your heart rate up a little while addressing some weaknesses and imbalances. This makes alot of sense to me. I don’t do enough of this mobilization/flexibility work as it is. And doing something like this wouldn’t impede my middle-aged body’s recovery.

So the next time I’m between training days and not taking a conditioning-style bicycle ride, I plan on cooking something up along these lines instead of powering through a tabata workout or just ass-sitting.

thanks for the link, i think there is some good stuff in there. if i was in your camp (not needing to lose fat) then i would like to focus on more of the mobility/flexibility stuff on non weight days. and i am fully aware i should be trying to accomplish it anyway, but there is only so much time in a day.

and bacon makes everything better…i had some last night myself.

Yeah, it definitely comes down to priorities. I have such limited time in the gym that I definitely cut mobility work sort of short to rush over to the squat rack or whatever.

Usually in braised greens there is just a hint of bacon. But this particular time there was like, 3/4 greens, 1/4 bacon. YUM.

Those circuits sounds like something I should be doing. Thanks for the link.

Oh and I use the same type of step for my box squats, too. It’s a nice, versatile piece of kit, that.

Since I’m ancient (42) I know exactly what you mean by taking longer to recover. Of course you already know the ultimate recovery tool, bacon.

Joe, you and I are making ancient look good.

Last nights training was rushed: I had only a limited amount of time before rushing off to a social engagement, the pizza-ed nature of which will be discussed later. I came into it with one goal: hit a PR squat number.

Back squats
Bar 1 x 10 warmup
75# 1 x 5
85#
