The Jordan Neely Case - Rear Naked Choke to Restrain Threatening Crazy Guy

There are several important issues in this case, but one thing in particular that I’m curious about is the Marine’s purported use of a rear naked choke to restrain this fellow. I am not a jiu-jitsu guy (at least not yet, though I hope to be at some point this year), so I don’t know exactly how or why a person might use this technique in the street. My understanding is that it is intended only to subdue, not to kill or permanently injure. I’m curious as to the thoughts going through the minds of jiu-jitsu folks as you read about this Marine’s conduct. Does it sound reasonable? Or was he reckless in how he used this hold?

Any choke can kill if held long enough. This choke applied correctly cuts off both blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Takes about 5 seconds to pass out.

I don’t know much about the case (this is the first I heard of it). The move is an effective way to stop someone, but does have risks.

How long before the left/government suggest having to register or apply for permission to do martial arts or any self defense?

Had to look this up. Looks like we might have another Chau Trial a-comin’.

I think that violent “marine” should go to prison. He’ll fit right in.

I think this is a good, fair article. You can tell its writer is knowledgeable, from such tidbits as:
“A spokesperson for the NYPD said the investigation is still ongoing and that even when a homicide is witnessed, arrests aren’t always made on the spot. ‘That’s not always how it works,’ Sgt. Sanchez told The Intercept.”

“Contrary to the NYPD statement, officers are often quick to make an arrest — or worse.”

“When a man allegedly stabbed a security guard in Queens last month, cops shot him on the spot. On the same day, when police responded to a man with a gun at a subway station in the Bronx, they shot him too. And in another incident on the same day, while responding to a report of a burglary, cops shot and killed a 78-year-old-man who answered his door while holding a gun.”

“In 2018, NYPD officers shot and killed Saheed Vassell because they said he was holding a metal pipe like it was a gun. The cops said between five and 10 seconds passed between the time they arrived on the scene and the time they shot Vassell.“

Left-wing politicians are certainly doing their best to fan the flames of racial hostility. AOC, brilliant as ever, has already tweeted that it was a murder. Ayanna Pressley has called it a “lynching.”

Well, maybe so, but I’d like to know more about what actually happened and whether the hold that the Marine used was appropriate for the situation. You appear to have concluded it was not. You may be right, but I’m curious as to why, assuming you aren’t assuming guilt based on the respective races of the people involved.

It’s probably more a question of the duration of the hold vs. the amount of time the hold was appropriate.

From a video I saw, there was like a total of three people pinning him down, the “marine” choking him and these two other guys.

I’m very confident three guys can restrain one guy without killing him, and what’s more ridiculous is how long the “marine” choked Jordan. “Marine” had intentions of killing Jordan, so I see it as murder.

What ever happened to empathy and value of human life, this situation was incredibly unnecessary.

I haven’t seen the video yet but from what I have read I think the young Marine is likely to face charges.

The rear naked choke is one of the best and safest ways to control a person. You are relatively safe and you can sleep the person or just restrain. Sleeping them is achieved by disrupting one or (if done properly) both carotid arteries in the neck. The immediate effect of a choke is that your world starts to close, then you go unconscious. This can happen in under 15 seconds, especially if the choke is tight on the carotids. Brain damage begins after a minute or so of no blood to the brain. Death follows a few minutes after that.

The problem with the RNC is that it is deadly force, likely to cause death or great bodily harm. It is routinely trained safely and repeatedly on judo and bjj mats, but this guy held it in too long.

To paraphrase my coach, BJJ is about breaking your opponent down both figuratively and literally until you can choke them to death. Training the whole spectrum is what allows you to use deadly techniques like the RNC without permanently injuring the person you are choking…

But only if you can control yourself.

I’ll find the full video and watch tonight, that may change my opinion.

Good luck. Post it if you’re successful.

Can you link it in this thread. I’d like to see. The videos I’ve found have just been news clips that don’t actually show the event.

I do think it may be reasonable to charge the marine if the choke hold was held excessively long. I’d also like to see how Neely was behaving on the train. Is it reasonable to think he was a serious threat? IDK?

In casual jujitsu fun, I’ve put someone out with a RNC. His body just went limp. Took 1-2 seconds for me realize he was out and to release the choke and make sure he was okay. I just say this as it is tough for me to imagine not being able to tell if someone is out.

We don’t even know whether this guy was armed yet. I guess we DO know he’s assaulted at least three women without provocation: believe all victims, etc.

Is it possible some white guys decided to murder a black guy on the subway in front of plenty of witnesses? Sure.

Possible? That’s just reality

Maybe. Do you have more information than I do(which is pretty much what’s been shared on here)?

that makes you a racist for thinking or believing that

Just the video in this article.

Again, that just shows a short period of the incident. It doesn’t show when the guy was released. Someone is still trying to hold the guy’s arms still during that video.

Your confidence comes from ignorance. Restraining someone, especially a mentally ill//challenged person is not easy. And I’m neither of those two things yet three of you couldn’t restrain one of me.

Maybe you can read minds. Regardless, I see it as a public service.
