The Israel War Thread

Fuck Hamas. They deserve everything coming to them.

But it is unsettling how people cannot, or refuse to hold these two ideas in their head: Israel is justified in military operations against Hamas, and the amount of collateral damage caused by Israel is unnecessarily large (or at the very least horrific).

Any amount is horrific. However,

  1. Most estimates are given by Hamas. Hamas has significant motivation to lie and is known to do so.
  2. In addition to simply inflating the total through lying, Hamas also seems motivated to inflate the actual total by making sure that civilians are positioned to increase collateral damage. They also prevent and discourage civilian populations from fleeing.
  3. Hamas is an irregular fighting force with close ties to the civilian population. The line between civilian and combatant is not terribly clear.
  4. Women and children is not a completely meaningful distinction either. There are women fighting on the side of Hamas. There are also many Hamas combatants younger than 18 (not really children, but classified as such in reports).

What’s horrific is saying that there is some acceptable number of non combatants that can be killed. What’s the difference if it’s one or one thousand if you’re the one or one of the thousand? What’s the difference to the parent of the one or the parents of the one thousand? War sucks and the idea it can somehow be less sucky, the idea it can be made less sucky, is a good way to keep having wars. But I’m thinking like a Westerner, not a Middle Easterner who has a different set of values with regard to human life. Hamas is getting exactly what it wanted: western tears and pity. And they paid for it with the blood of Palestinian children.

You’re claiming they are not different. Thus, all of your antisemitic vitriol applies to the people you are defending. Congratulations, you are an idiot.

Fake news.

Yahya Sinwar’s correspondence with compatriots and mediators shows he is confident that Hamas can outlast Israel https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/gaza-chiefs-brutal-calculation-civilian-bloodshed-will-help-hamas-626720e7?reflink=share_mobilewebshare

Which is why Israel needs a plan beyond “bounce the rubble”. Diminishing returns militarily, civilian harm, terrible PR.

I don’t think they should appease the antisemitic.

No. Isreal needs to do EVERYTHING they can to destroy the evil that is Hamas. It’s not a PR war. It’s a war for survival.

Agree, they’re like a hive-mind serial killer.

Bouncing the rubble isn’t destroying Hamas, it’s just suppressing them… for now. Continuing as Israel has been over the past 8+months is not sustainable from a military, economic, or political standpoint. And if there is no other plan than to keep bouncing the rubble, as soon as they stop, Hamas will pop their heads up and fire more rockets and launch more attacks. And this humanitarian tragedy will continue to drag on, and more Hamas/Hezbollah recruits will be created.

It’s not a tragedy when what is happening is what was expected to happen. Hamas is using its own people’s suffering to strengthen their position. Ask yourself why none of the wealthy Arab states are doing something to help the Gazans.

They will do this regardless. They will do this as long as they exist.

Again, not a tragedy, but it will drag on as long as the Palestinian Arabs exist. They will never accept Israel as a neighbor.

You believe a ceasefire will stop that? There is no carrot that will stop Palestinian Arabs from trying to destroy Israel.

The kind of callousness and indifference you exhibit towards innocent lives, especially innocent children, is sickening.

What’s your plan? Hamas is killing people and trying to kill more people. They are literally using their own people as hostages. Backing off and letting them do what they want is not a solution. That is the lesson of Oct 7th.

Not having a plan is far more callous than having a plan that kills people and eventually stops the killing.

Hey Pat, ever considered letting AI handle your punctuation? It might prevent people from mistaking your writing for קוד סתרים

Saying it’s not a tragedy when small children are killed is sickening. Period.

What Israel is doing now has limited military benefit and has crossed the line into punitive. It is just causing civilian suffering. Hamas isn’t being further weakened, it is just the civilian population suffering now. The current Israeli plan will only stop the killing, by killing all of gaza (aka genocide).

Are you supportive of the current plan of continuing to simply bounce the rubble for eternity?

As long as they are being shot at, Hamas will keep their head down and won’t be able to do anything like Oct 7. Do you have a better idea for how Israel can actually protect itself that doesn’t rely on the goodwill of Hamas?

A ceasefire for starters. Followed by an extremely heavy UN peacekeeper presence going into gaza to distribute aid and basically take over the civil duties that Hamas currently controls.

Right now, to civilians in gaza, Israel only offers bombs and death so it’s easy to side with Hamas and their propaganda. Israel, and it’s neighbors (particularly SA) all fucking hate Hamas and Iran and need to step up to clearly show the Palestinians that they are the clear path towards peace and prosperity, not Hamas. The attempt to persuade the population towards peace and away from Hamas needs to be made over, and over again. Even when Hamas pops it’s head up and fires 50 rockets. Israel cannot give in to their animalistic feelings and attempt to kill everyone in gaza because it’s the easy way out. Hamas was severely weakened by 1/1/24…these last 6 months of war have done little to further weaken Hamas, it has mostly just affected the civilians in gaza.

Wholesale annihilation of an entire people (men, women children, combatants, civilians) is flat out wrong. It is never the right solution. Even (especially?) when it is the easiest/simplest solution.
