I like the workout, but one thing keeps repeating itself, you can’t serve two masters. If you’re doing 5/3/1, its to get stronger. But I see what you are doing. Only one way to find out, stick with it for a while.

Whats Canada Day?[/quote]
Canada Day is the day Canadians celebrate their independence from Britain. Coincidentally, it’s only 3 days off from Independence Day, when Americans celebrate their independence from Britain.
As for you Brits . . . really sorry that everyone wants to get away from you.

I’m not sure where K is going wrong here.
He’s performing 5/3/1 on the 4 major lifts and throwing in accessory work. He’s roughly averaging 15-16 sets post major lift and his focus is on improving weak areas. That’s actually something Lord Wendler discusses in the 531 bible. He also states “Train like a Bodybuilder” (pg.41) to achieve balance in your training.
I concede on the fact that you can’t make MAXIMUM progress at one goal when chasing two BUT you can make progress. (Heck, I’m MUCH stronger than I was 16 weeks ago on a caloric deficit while using MUCH more volume than K has outlined)
While 531 is arguably a strength program, I believe it’s essentially a progression template and that’s why it is so effective. Most people fall on their face when they try and train on their own (usually without an outlined progression schedule). 531 provides that in a simple format (heck, you only need to worry about 4 weeks at a time).
Just a quick read of the logs of the dozen folks on here following 5/3/1 will show that everyone is making progress but not one program is the same as the other.
Just my $.02

I really and truly appreciate the feedback. If I wasn’t HUNTING FOR OPPOSING VIEWPOINTS, I wouldn’t have asked. Todd, we are in the vast minority here. These dudes are singularly focused on improving their lifts to the exclusion of all other things. You and I are focused on the aesthetic, and increasing strength is really just a vehicle for improving that.
username and dogg, I deeply respect the advice. And you are both 100% correct. I will not progress my strength as effectively as I would by reducing the volume and increasing the recovery. But I’m making that decision deliberately, and the trade-off is intentional. My primary goal isn’t gaining strength; it is gaining muscle and re-composing existing bodyweight.
The accomplished natural bodybuilders out there are doing something similar. Relatively high volume, higher-ish weight (but nothing approaching a powerlifter’s), and high rep ranges. Combine that with a modest caloric surplus, and attentntion to timing and quality of carbs… that seems to be the holy grail for aggressive intermediate bodybuilders like me who can’t stand being fat and flabby anymore.
Worst case, I try this out and it doesn’t work. I’ll have made no progress, but had some fun along the way. It will still be a win.
I think it will work for you. I do think you will have to be more careful regarding lift order on particular days than someone following 5/3/1 to the letter of the law. I think you’ll have to pay more attention to recovery as well.
But that said theres nothing thats counter intuitive to what you’re trying. It’s a lot of volume but you have a significant number of lifts that won’t have much CNS impact if any so it shouldn’t be too hard on you either.

Where the HELL!!! Has one of my favorite Canucks gone??
Well… I was on holidays. I went to Iowa. There’s corn there! I met up with my three best friends, who inconveniently live across the globe. Once a year we get together, drink a lot of beer, lift a bit, hang out. We dragged the tractor, carried drainage tubing, flipped tires, and hauled cinder blocks wrapped in chains.
(By the way, that tire still has the f##king rim in it. I swear it was made of solid lead.)
Then when the festivities are over, we all say “Hasta La Vista” and part ways for another year. It’s awesome, but it also sucks… it’s totally unfair I don’t get to spend more time with these fine gentlemen.
Oh, the dignity! I might have been a little bit tipsy in this photo. Anyways, I’ll be posting again soon. Summer has been busy. I look forward to ctaching up with everyone’s logs.
Stay tuned!
Wow! Now THAT’S a vacation!!
Corn in Iowa . . . what will they think of next?

Ahhh . . . so that’s why they call it BOURBON Street.
Gun control? you mean ya’ll can hit your targets up there? I wasn’t trying to start off a storm with what I thought of your program, I’m soory. I actually like what you want to do with it. It seems your main goal is body composition and not strength. But keeping with 5/3/1, will keep you plenty strong for what you want to do. I’m doing the texas method and its just three main lifts, with squatting each time, no size gain I don’t think, but if it puts my squat into the 300’s I’ll be very happy with it.
I’m concerned…why does that guy behind you have his hands on your hips?..oh wait, not that concerned I just burned my eyeballs out!
