Yup, plant based guys are the worst with their claims on cholesterol, methionine and such. And act like sugar and unlimited starch is awesome etc. Always funny to tell them it’s all largely irrelevant assuming calories are kept in check. They will ban anyone who says otherwise, not any better than all the pro carnivore / anti carb idiots in that aspect.
I don’t really have anything to say against the concept of not eating animal foods for ethical reason. Self sacrifice is admirable. I’d rather get healthier but they can do whatever they want
Ok, I think I see what you’re saying now. You’re saying that people make an ethical claim and then try to make health claims that support the same end even if those claims aren’t right. I definitely agree that this sort of thing occurs. In my opinion, this isn’t an issue of people maliciously trying to deceive others. I think it’s an issue of people genuinely believing false things. Humans do this all the time. We try to make facts line up with what we already believe in order to make ourselves feel more comfortable. Gray areas aren’t comfortable.
I’m actually reading about this very issue in behavioral finance at the moment. Once an analyst holds a belief, he or she makes facts fit the hypothesis rather than making the hypothesis fit the facts
Yea, I have Vegan friends and I even participate on a Vegan food online group and do not post anti-veganism posts, just vegan recipes that I have tried and there are constant posts about how meat eaters are dying from x, y, z, low testosterone, E.D. high testosterone, high cholesterol, inflammation (but plants aren’t inflammatory) etc.
They don’t care if those claims are true, just whether they might affect an outcome.
I wanted to add that I would not try Beyond meat given that it gets a huge portion of its calories from canola oil. If they used safflower oil, and it was what free i would try it, and might eat it occasionally.
And gamechangers was a literal “clusterfu*k” of non-sequiturs, strawmen logical fallacies with the approach that “enough” B.S. amounts to a legitimate case.
Gotcha, yea I genuinely think they do believe that those things are true. I also think they care about whether their beliefs are true. However, it seems to me that it’s a problem of accepting all of the arguments for veganism rather than just some of the arguments. For example, someone who believes that the ethical arguments for veganism are good might be inclined to accept information that veganism is good for health as well (even if the health arguments are not well-supported compared to the ethical ones).
I think the issue is that some people are completely uninformed and under-researched, but they (fallaciously) give their own opinions the same weight and deference as the opinions of scientists and people who actually study this stuff for a living
Also I haven’t actually eaten the beyond meat stuff. I’ve heard it tastes good, but I’d rather just have a regular food that’s not masquerading as another one haha
I got banned from a keto group back in my high fat days. Suggested a banana instead of their dumb “TKD” mix ie. Dextrin, Potassium, Magnesium, some obscure PWO with more electrolytes.
There were graphs linking banana consumption to obesity. People going on and on about “fucktose” & sugar being the root cause of all evils. You say it’s mostly calories in VS out they’ll pull some non scientific stuff where a dude ate a lot of fat for a few weeks and didn’t get fat. All the nonsense on LDL & thyroid is pretty epic too.
Oh well, as said above, guys that want to feel good don’t want to think about facts
I’m just a 54yo dude trying to stay fit. I lift.
Because of my family/medical history, this movie made me think. And what I think is, even though I’m still going to love a T-Bone, I’m going to start shifting protein sources toward plant based where I can for the sake of my aging ass’ health. It simply makes sense for me as an individual bc I’m never going to be on stage or compete
in anything physical. I only compete with me.
I’ll continue trying to read this thread to see what the more advanced guys say, as usual .
