Eh. There’s worse things to get little kids into. My older cousin used to take me shopping with him when he was babysitting me. Shopping- as in stuffing merchandise into our coats and not paying for it.
Yeah, I agree. Maybe I’m just being old and crotchety. My kids have all trained from an early age and my 9 year old does 8 week progressive DL cycles and pulls weekly. He can pull 135 for 8 pretty easy at about 95#'s BW.
The thing is we didn’t let him put any weight on the bar until he could do 3x8 with good form and he did he still does a ton of BW squats, pull-ups, fat mans, hand stand push ups and regular push ups. He also drags the sled and does sprints with us. So again, I am not opposed to the concept.
I just think having kids that age do limit lifts that look that sloppy is a bad idea. Aditionally, they need to get some 5 kilo bumper plates so they can pull from higher off the floor.
Otherwise, I think it is awesome. Some of the biggest kicks I have gotten at meets is when my oldest daughter used to video tape and do commentary (she was like 10 at the time.) She would be like, “Oh, it’s gonna be close. Nope, 2-1 on depth. Well, he has another attempt left so we’ll see how he does.”
Good stuff.
X3 You should let kids do what they want to if they like it at age 5, but I think he should teach them better. Dont have a lil kid pull a muscle that he will never recover from till he is 20.

See, now that was cool. Good technical execution and dad isn’t pushing him too hard at all.
I totally dig how he fabricated him the squat rack and farmer’s handles out of pvc piping.

I’m all for kids lifting weights but not with that form or competitively.
Really? Fucking terrible?
I don’t have kids, but obviously he is just imitating his dad and his dad’s lifting buddies. I doubt the parents MADE him do it and MADE him compete.
Could it be a little irresponsible to not show the kid how to do it without hurting himself? Maybe.
Is it fucking terrible? No way, old man.

Of course its not, just let the kid lift maximal weights with a U shaped back and see how he does sure what’s the worst that could happen…

THAT is adorable.
I don’t think those kids are competing. I think their parents are just letting them mess around after the meet. The first kid was actually announced as the last lifter of the meet, but I think that was just a joke. The second kid was definitely not competing.
I think the parents are just letting their kids have a little fun.
i think it was retarded how the kid had his arms out like that…the guy pinching his ears to pump him up before the lift…i think it’s a bit too much for a 5 year old actually…and if walks around like that in school he’s gonna be a loser lol

X2.
I love it after the squat he just drops the plate on the ground… and the 76 step walkout.
That kid could be a HOUSE by the time he’s like 15. LOL
I saw the kid at a meet I did once, his father is big powerlifter name escapes me . but yeah the kid is borne and bread on the iron sport, you should see him talk powerlifitng or training, you’d think you were talking to a 30 year old meathead.
LOL the people that go “he has bad form”.

Well, it is but keep in mind he has been training for about 3 years, the last 2 pretty steady and he has always pulled from plate height. Even when he was using a 1" bar we would set it on blocks.
He only trains when he wants to, and during wrestling season he really likes to climb the ropes to the point he will be the last kid there after practice asking the coach to drop the ropes so he can climb. He has both total number of times climbed PR’s and sets of 3 consecutive climb PR’s. He doesn’t train much from about November through March because of 3X week practice and meets on weekends.
The thing is (obviously) you provide the guidance and let them set the activity level (within reason). It took a long time to get him to quit arguing with us about what weight he pulls or drags because he wanted to lift heavy all the time. He would be like, “Hey, that’s easy I want to put more on.” Little boys don’t understand the concept of training volume.
At first he would get frustraged but now he has settled in and we have a printed out cycle for him on the gym wall.
They are really easy to coach at this age so IMO, there is no excuse a for young kid who is basically an empty canvas to be lifting limit weight that leaves them incapable of holding good body position.
good job apwsearch, sounds like you got a great thing goin there.
