@Adamrere, do you even lift?
Because enough people have pointed out numerous flaws in your entire position and you havenāt budged.
So you didnāt actually come to this site to post lightning rod opinions, obviously weak and easily rebutted- in order to have your mind changed, did you?
The fans of different team can get very hostile towards each other when they would not be hostile if they didnt know the other was a fan of an opposing team. Im sure most people know about how soccer hooligans would have gang battles with each other. Stuff like this happens with american sports too sometimes. I see it more of making people enemies due to unnatural things than it bringing people together.
I have heard plenty of times from wives how they hate how their husband will spend the entire weekend watching sports and drinking. I dont think that is good. Football games can take hours to end. Its a big commitment to be a serious sports fan.
I think your argument with watching sports and gambling away all your money is making sports too benign as an activity in your example. You do not need to gamble away all your money. You could spend your entire sunday playing the slots not spending much money. Just as you could spend the entire sunday watching game after game until its time to go to bed. You could also spend a lot of money by purchasing tickets for every home game.
And yes there are other problems, but I dont think I need to list every problem with society before addressing the one I want to talk about.
Every one of your arguments hinges on the exception, not the rule.
Iāll ask again,
I like the honesty. You did start this thread. And I was dumb enough to reply. Threads like this make me feel like a failure. Out of consideration for me you shouldnāt start any threads.
Yes, I wanted a discussion and hoped even though it unlikely as it is, to see if someone agreed. I obviously dont expect to have this thread be the turning point in how society sees pro sports.
Your point about how some groups might see pro sports is something that I can see as a problem with society. Imagine a society that told its poorest people that society will give them money to escape poverty if they can run with a football good enough to entertain them. Its sick.
They said the exact same thing to those talented enough in music to entertain them.
When you say the exception not the rule, are you meaning that my point on how it is possible for a sports fan to waste his money is not the norm? If so I do not know if the average gambling fan waste most of his money either. He spends some, but I do not believe that most throw everything away and ruin their lives.
True. Id say thats quite bad too. The difference I would say is that musicians actually create something new. There is at least something to where what these people become is actually important for a society. With pro athletes, they are basically just well paid gladiators. There is nothing new created like what an inventor, or artist does to improve society.
So the house loses in most cases?
I think the opposite; I believe more viewers are addicted than care to admit it, and that the number of people addicted is far more significant than has been reported.
And for the 2nd time, you ignored my question
so Iām out. I canāt stand debating non-lifters⦠we are too different by this factor alone. Iām shocked that someone who does not train would have beef with professional sports ![]()
This is a completely different argument. You havenāt even convinced us with a reasonable argument that pro sports are inherently ābadā, let alone that they would raise themselves to the level of societal evil that would necessitate a ban. I can think of a long list of things that should be banned before pro sports, if being ābadā for society is the criteria:
-Fast food
-Soda
-Added sugar
-Alcohol
-Jennifer Lopez movies
-etc, etcā¦
Sports would fall somewhere around āunripe bananasā and āCoconut La Croixā in the list of things bad for society to the point of needing a federal ban.
Iām going to use this the next time my wife starts an argument with me.
Well, if one day you stop posting in your log unannounced, Iāll know you tried it and failed to dodge the objects being thrown at you ![]()
I do lift weights. I found that question odd and ignored it since it would be weird to have even come across this website if I did not.
You would be surprised.
We all have opinions. I too have opinions. Quite a bit of new music is detrimental to society.
American football has been evolving throughout its history. You could easily make a college course āThe Evolution of American Footballā that would be very difficult to pass if the instructor wished it to be. Any āstudentā of football understands the complexity and changes that make football what it is today.
Thats a good point. I still am not convinced though that changes in how football is played now compared to the past is similar to something like what an inventor or artist does.
Anyway, what sort of music is detrimental would you say?
That is a whole new thread in itself.
Iāll be sure to try and avoid that thread.
Just to be brief though would you say that it is the lyrical content or the actual musical composition?
You are trying to pull me in.
Letās just say that it is the power of the music that allows the lyrics to penetrate the mind and soul.
