Question. Did you not try to defend sports with arguments based on the free market or that letting a big industry die would be bad? And did I bring up arguments countering your points on the free market and too big industries?
-
Freedom, not the free market per se. Suggesting paid sports ought to be outlawed because human execution videos are also outlawed is a foolish idea worthy of ridicule.
-
You failed to counter my points with any compelling point of your own. See above.
You also donāt know what a straw man is, which is unsurprising coming from someone who thinks pro sports ought to be outlawed.
In conclusion, sports still rule.
LOL.
It is meaningful to them. Why should I or society give a shit? You want to award mediocrity. Participation trophies for everyone. Everyone is a winner. That is a losers mentality.
I agree! But this is not unique to sports. Have you, by chance, been made aware of how people these days will put their own self-worth in a politician or political party? Have you not noticed that it is a widespread occurrence that people will put their own image/self worth on something outside of themselves? I agree this is not healthy, but I donāt see how targeting sports in particular is the right approach. Participating in sports brings lifelong healthy habits to many, while worshipping a youtuber does not.
For many, this is not true. I care far more about my own performance (or family membrer/friend) in a local event than I care for Justin Herbertās passing yards. Iād rather go 3-4 with a home run in a slow pitch softball game and win than watch Aaron Judge blast a 450-foot HR. Iād rather hit a new PR on a lift than watch someone else break a new World record.
By this logic, a focus on anything will be harmful to society. If we focus on Hollywood stars, some child will be disappointed that he did not become the same star despite his best efforts. If the focus is on famous musicians and singers, another child will also be disappointed that he didnāt make it like his idols. If the focus is on the famous innovators and businessmen there will again be disappointed that they did not achieve the same results. If you ask me, it would be best if we didnāt focus on anything ![]()
So⦠what activities does your son do?
How about this: The focus on pro sports is a symptom and not a cause. Its cause is a government and society that permits little in the way of competition and aggression outside of the sporting world. We have a society/government that demands submissiveness in every other area of life. The circus helps.
I also donāt like sports⦠so I donāt watch them.
This post is really weird.
OP has clearly never tasted the sweet, sweet, enjoyment of victory.
I disagree. I donāt like reality TV shows or candy corn and both are bad for society, so both should be banned.
Is your only complaint that my examples are not close enough to pro sports? Why is the gambling industry not a good example? I could think up others, like the tobacco or alcohol industry as things people would find reasonable to ban. What sort of example would be more convincing for you? Would gambling be good enough? Gambling is already heavily regulated and people end up in jail all the time due to it. It is a great form of entertainment for many, but I think it is not good for society.
Im basically saying that society should not award anything. The person who finishes first is not doing something more meaningful than the person who finishes last. It should be an individual thing. It is the silliest thing how people get so obsessed with strangers playing a sport.
Right. It seems that recently the sport mindset has transcended into politics.
āParticipating in sports brings lifelong healthy habits to many, while worshipping a youtuber does not.ā
Right, but people spending so much time obsessing over strangers participating in sports does not really do much good. Pro sports gives this idea that pro sports are the real deal, while you playing a pick up game of basketball is more like imitation of the pros than anything else. I believe pro sports lessens everyone elses participation.
Ok, and your caring about yourself is something that I would like everyone to do. But I do feel like the focus on pros makes it seem like what the pros do is real while everyone else is just imitating. Like there is something more meaningful playing in a pro match than playing a game among friends. Like its more real.
This was a painful read. I am a participant and never a fan. All I do is follow ESPN internet to keep up with scores so I can converse with my friends if the subject of sports occurs. I donāt watch any sports. I donāt go to games to watch anyone. I played rugby in college and for our city club. I competed in powerlifting. I competed in bodybuilding. I judged bodybuilding.
If all of America was like me, pro athletes would be voting Democrat to make $15 per hour. (Do any of you remember when pro athletes were car or appliance salesmen during the off season?)
Any person so frail as to feel a loser because they could not reach the pinnacle of their preferred sport has been coddled their entire life. They are losers. The good thing about sports is that all of us learn to cope with failure. Failure to win a game. Failure to make the team. Failure to be the best athlete. And for even the best, failure to be able to compete as age or injuries cause physical decline)
I hope @Adamrere doesnāt reply to me. He should be perusing the TRT theads. Iām guessing less than 100ng/dL
I think the difference between sportsman and artists is that artists are actually creating something new that everyone can now enjoy. Where as athletes are playing the same game everyone was playing in peewee. The main thing is that the focus on pro sportsmen brings nothing to society. Focusing on great artists brings culture. A way of looking at it would be a writer who created a series of books the world fell in love with, and an athlete who played soccer at a high level. The artist brings us a creation, the athlete participates in a sport. To me its a world of difference. If we got rid of every pro athlete in the world from the last 100 years, would anyone really think society would be at much of a loss? But then what if we stripped the world of the last 100 years of every creator?
So is your point that you would never want anything to be banned? Are you ok with hard drugs being legalized? We could go on and on about things that are not legal and see if you are ok with legalizing everything.
So when the people who are like Uncle Rico from Napolean Dynamite, whos fault is it? Is it Uncle Rico? If so what about him? His genetics that predisposed him to be like this? His experiences which made him feel like a loser? What is it that makes them a loser? To me its quite obvious that if there is a problem with people, there is a problem with their environment. It would be like looking at a community who suddenly all started becoming depressed. Of the two approaches which makes more sense, telling everyone to just be more disciplined and stop being losers, or to find out what is causing these people to be depressed and change it?
Im mean other than sports this happens while people are being raised. How many parents tell their kids that they are going to be a movie star, a musician, a famous director, or a any other role in society that is seen as having high status. Do you think that this sort of thing does nothing negative to a person as they mature and realize that they are not going to be a part of the elite of society?
Iād wager that e2 > TT as well.
So I think in the other thread I noticed some users are Christian. Are there any users who are Christian who also believe in the idea that we should categorize people as winners and losers? If so how do you imagine heaven to be? Will there be winners and losers in heaven? Will some people be very successful while others are in poverty?
Is this required viewing to communicate with @Adamrere?
I know nothing about Uncle Rico or the horse he rode in on.
What mathematical function and its derivative are equal for all values of x?
