Does that mean U2 is protected from our flaming?
That’s exactly what I hear when I listen to U2’s Stay.
Mostly referring to the ganging up on @Frank_C
I have no love for U2
I can handle it. I stand by my opinion. After all, it’s just that, an opinion.
I’d like to remind everyone I said identify as_______.
By this I mean when someone asks you “what do you do?”, or when you describe yourself to others, do you respond with “I’m a bodybuilder” or “I’m a power lifter”?
I do lots of things recreationally but I don’t say “I’m a basketball player” or “I’m a softball player”.
I’d venture to guess the elite competitors don’t have to have a day job after you throw in endorsements and sponsorships. Maybe I’m wrong though because I don’t follow any particular athletes in the strength and fitness worlds. I actually don’t really follow any athletes.
For powerlifting and strongman this is incredibly rare. You are saying a lot of WSM competitiors and 900lb deadlifters should not identify as strongman or powerlifters.
Edit: To clarify, I want to state that this isn’t flaming in the flame free thread; just a point of explanation. People can classify however they like, but strongman and powerlifting aren’t high paying sports.
For what it’s worth, I ‘identify’ as a father and a powerlifter because those are the two things that consume the majority of my emotional and mental energy and also are the two things that get me up in the morning even on an awful day.
Yeah, the idea of only identifying as one thing is interesting to me. Consequently, I DON’T identify myself by my profession. I try to make a clear distinction between what I DO vs who I am. When asked, I don’t say “I am X”, but “I work for X”.
Exactly! My job is for paying the bills and having a comfortable life. That’s IT. I’m lucky in that I like it well enough and work with people I mostly get along with in a beautiful building. But it isn’t AT ALL who I am. Who I am is with my family and under the bar.
I’m glad y’all said that. I have a list of things I am.
No attempted implication that you couldn’t. Just trying to stick to the original idea of the thread.
I can’t stand thirty year olds who play slow pitch softball and act like they’re some godsend for hitting the ball 200’.
jesus christ I really hope we’re allowed to identify as something other than our job! I fucking hate mine.
I am considering getting a set of acrylic nails for my right hand.
Can’t flame me, bitches!
Just be sure to tell them you want them thin and really though. The thick ones don’t work worth a shit for picking.
I don’t think anyone should identify with their job but I don’t think many of us should identify with our training either.
When I think of identifying with something, I’m thinking of how you would describe yourself when meeting an important person (perhaps your future in-laws for the first time). When your fiancé’s dad says "tell me about yourself " are you going to blurt out “I’m a power lifter!” or would you possibly share some of your other qualities and interests first?
Maybe this shows my perspective a little better. I don’t think I’m viewing this from the same angle as the rest of you.
Uh… I dunno… I would probably blurt out, I like to lift heavy shit, well heavyish shit. ![]()
Why just the right? Get both hands done each individual nail a different color.
In for a penny in for a pound.
This is gettiny further and further from your original statement.
Being a strongman wouldn’t be the first thing I say, but neither would my profession. I would start with where I grew up, where I went to school, and what I studied. Essentially going chronological. Then, where I work and what my job is. Then, hobbies and interests.
I would absolutely say “I am a strongman” during that time, because it is one of the things I am. But it would not be the first thing I blurt out, primarily because I do not suffer from some sort of social defect.
