Probably. Just because something isn’t around doesn’t mean you don’t want it. I wanted plenty of sex with perfect 10’s in my time, but none were around…

Especially a hard wired human need that creates an urge like food. Although I suppose eventually your body would just get used to it on the way to death, but who knows?

Probably being a bit willfully obtuse, I’m known to do it myself in debates. It puts the other side in defense mode by way of making them question their own logic instead of you attacking it.

Ah, I actually see feeling hunger and resisting the urge to eat as 2 separate things. People with no access to food will certainly feel hungry, but I would not say they are resisting any urges by not eating; they are simply unable.

This is how I approach things like hunger and pain. I don’t view them as problems that need solving, but just feelings to be experienced. I don’t see a need to resist anything here. Just one of those parts of being human.

And please don’t interpret this as an argument or anything. I like to get a little cosmic with philosophy sometimes, haha.

This is my existence. The problem is, i also rarely feel hungry. I forget to eat often, then my blood sugar gets low enough I start feeling light headed and I remember I require sustenance.

Two confessions:

  1. Nickleback came on today and I didn’t turn it off. (Its cause effort, like punny said. :roll_eyes:)

  2. I hardly workout these days. Instead I just take drugs and see changes.

I’ve come to the point where I hate eating so much, if someone invents a pill that I can take to meet my caloric requirements without even making me feel satiated, I’m going to stop eating and live on coffee and cigars.

I am the polar opposite to this and can often eat for hours on end if given the chance. i hate wasting food (thanks for that issue dad) so will often just sit at the table and finish off the kids and wife’s food!!

I didnt mean “argument” like we are yelling at each other, but rather to mean we are putting forth our points of view to support our positions, or find out the other persons. More the debate class version, not the playground version.

I agree with both of those things… But when you are talking to people who go to the office and its Sharons birthday Monday, Ted’s last day Tuesday, someone decides to bring bagles on Wednesday, etc… While not eating any of it is indeed “doing nothing”, Resisting the urge to eat some of that is definitely “something” for most people most of the time.

You’ve probably noticed by now that you’re a different breed of cat than most other people walking around.

Yes.

-If you are trying to lose weight and simply have to take in less calories, you are resisting the urge to eat more than you are allotted.

-If no food is available you would still have to resist going to the store.

-Taking it to an extreme, if you are starving you would still try and resist eating whatever is around you. Documented cases of people eating bark, wall paste, saw dust, pets…each other.

I dont think you went extreme enough. I think he means a hypothetical scenario where there is literally nothing to eat. Would you still have to resist the hunger you are feeling to eat if there is literally nothing to eat?

I once fasted for 48 hours (somewhat by accident). It never occured to me until then but I spend way too much time thinking about food/what I’m going to have for my next meal.

I’m pretty sure I freed up an additional 4 hour per day cause it certainly felt like I had way more time, if that’s even possible.

Way back when the Velocity Diet was a big thing here, that was a common observation. When all of your meals are planned and take 60 seconds to prepare and consume… you have a lot of extra time on your hands.

I’ve heard you say this a few times now. What did you eat on those three occasions?

I don’t think I am anything special honestly. Practice seems go breed habit. I have turned down food for so long that accepting feels different from the norm. I find it’s just about setting paradigms.

Nothing too exotic; more just quantity. The last 2 times, it was after making weight for a powerlifting meet. I went to Dennys and had 2 orders of pancakes along with all the sides that came with it, and that ended up being a mistake because they swole up inside my stomach thus making me feel “full”. Second time I played it “smart” and went to a thin crust pizza buffet and was eating faster than they could bring out food. Ended up swinging by Taco Bell on the way home for a quesadilla and some nachos.

First time was in high school after wrestling season ended. Mom took me out to a great Mexican place and I finished off my platter, then we headed out to coldstone for dessert and I filled in all the cracks with a smoothie.

Meanwhile, I shared on my training log the other day 2 weeks ago I put away a 1.6lb T-bone in about 10 minutes and had to restrain myself from eating what was left of the Mrs. steak along with everything else in the house, haha. I’ve always had a voracious appetite, which may be why I don’t see “resisting the urge” as a significant thing. For me, that’s just a state of existence. If I were to ever eat at the rate they I feel the compulsion to do so at, I’d be VERY fat.

I would not call having access to a store with food an instance of food not being available.

To me available means that it is readily obtainable. If food is “available” at a store 500 miles away, it is not available to you.

In such a situation, would a person who is not eating resisting the urge to eat?
