No flame or anything but I’ve never understood people who think they’re going to be the next Arnold/Bill Gates/whatever successful person. The mentality is just weird to me.

If you think you’re going to be successful, sure. But thinking you’re going to be the next so and so, just weird.

Good question. In fact, after seeing what it does for women, that ranks in the top 3 dumbest things I’ve ever said. Eh, maybe 5. Well anyways, its up there somewhere.

For me the biggest sin of crossfit is not especially it’s fault (because it has coaches and seminars and whatnot). But yeah, the idea that everyone can and should do the Olympic lifts and that they can be quickly self taught. Check IG for innumerable crossfit fails involving people, for example, jerking without a split stance and either calling forward or backward, dropping the bar on themselves or not dropping it at all and almost taking out half the population of the gym.

Its interesting to read these and im taking the assumption that for every good coach, there are another 10 that are making the brand of crossfit look stupid
I do these “events” so to speak that replicate the crossfit games so to speak, but even in training there seems to be no stupid shit
I mean its really concentrating on form and the core exercises are power/hang cleans, deadlifts, thrusters, pushups, pullups, muscle ups, farmers carries, wall balls and burpees
And even on the lifts, they never do high reps as it runs the risk of form breakdown.
Last night for example, there were 2 seven minute amraps
In pairs
5 powercleans
10 pull ups
/
5 kettlebell front squats
10 push ups
More functional fitness

Ive always just seen it as smaller and weaker persons strongman, what I enjoy out of it is that I can get my 4 days of weight training in with my 7 days of morning cardio, and generally 1 to 2 days of crossfit functional fitness just to keep my general fitness up

Maybe where im from im not exposed to the whole “cRoSsFiT ruLeS U sUcK” stigma though
Which is probably a good thing as i understand it would turn people off trying it

Not a Crossfit guy, but I think this is the problem. Doing Helen or whatever, and trying to do it faster, or for more reps, contributes to the form breakdown.

There is no intermediate programming - it’s just more or faster, and that is what contributes to injuries.

Again, admittedly, not a CrossFit person, so I might be wrong.

But I read it and Rippetoe said it, so it must be truth, lol.

Yeah for sure, im probably assuming that it again comes down to coaches or trainers who are doing those two things
Obviously with movements such as powercleans they need to be explosive so you cant really slow the movement down, but really making sure the form stays consistent throughout
Ive managed to work my way up for my 6rm from 70kg to 110kg in that time
Havent really been exposed to too high reps in any class yet, but 100% can see where form would break down doing higher reps

If it wasn’t for the cost, the cult reputation, the flame from other lifters or the kipping pull ups, I would definitely think about doing crossfit !!

A lot of people hit on the crossfit hate stuff, and I admit I did it too to some degree, and for me it was like this:

  • Back when it first started, you just went to the website and did whatever workout they had that day. No rhyme or reason, you do Fran because its posted on the website that day, and its just a random hodgepodge of exercises done with a rep scheme that makes no sense other than to tire you out… Its just a stupid way to train. Oh and its named Margret, or Fran because… who knows. The girl names just added an extra element of bullshit to it. I just looked and its still basically that way now. The workouts are designed to make you tired, thats about it.

  • As others have mentioned, they have no programming or way to progress except “for time” … so its always (for example) men do 135 and women do 95. Reps are 21-15-9, just get faster, which incentivizes bad form on dangerous lifts. Obviously anyone with 2 brain sells can “just add weight and start over” but thats not built into the official system.

  • They also have no reason for what they do except for it being hard or tiring. I suppose theres some merit in that, but there are better ways to train. Do 50 deadlifts at 185 today. Because… reasons. They have no respect for why a lift is done in a certain way, the Snatch or box jump for example, which leads to them implementing them in stupid and dangerous ways

  • They offer a 1 or 2 day cert to become a trainer, give me a break. These people have no business coaching people in these types of lifts AFTER A DAY, yet they can claim to be a “crossfit certified level 1 trainer!” and unwitting people will put their health and body on the line because of it.

Theres a few more but the list is getting too long. Suffice to say a lot of us just thought that it was the ultimate marketing scheme with no real benefit over the traditional “lift weights and eat right” that we are all already doing.

Having said that, as more experienced coaches (Like our own CT) have gotten their hands on it, Crossfit can definitely be a good way to train for strength, size, and leanness which is what many of us are after, but a day 1 newb without a coach (or a wildly incompetent coach) could likely get themselves hurt just following the websites WOD’s.

I used to talk to the owner of a box a few doors down from a shop I worked in. He was actually pretty cool and level headed. Had certs from all of the normal governing bodies and stuff, and used crossfit as a label to get people in. They’d do group warm ups and other crossfit stuff, but a lot of what he did was strongman oriented and general s&c.

First time posting here in a LONG time, the old timers know who I am and can vouche for my legitimacy.

I’ve been crossfitting for two years now and did my L1 this weekend. Not a flame but you’re speaking authoritatively about something which you have no knowledge. Literally everything you wrote there is incorrect from both the perspective of practice in my home gym and from the information and guidance provided from the L1 course forward through the Crossfit trainer education path. In fact, most of your assertions were directly contradicted by statements made in the L1.

Whats your L1, and why do they name WOD’s after women’s names?

L1 is the first tier of Crossfit trainer education and one of the minimum requirements for opening an affiliate. You’re not considered a certified trainer until you reach L3 and you’re not officially a “coach” until you reach L4. Each level has increasingly strenuous educational and experience prerequisites.

They name benchmarks after Glassman’s ex girlfriends much in the same way that they name hurricanes after women. It’s just a tounge in cheek thing, benchmarks need names.
