Because it’s hot! It’s below freezing all day right now so I wear sweats and a hoody to the gym. I get hot and start peeling off layers and there’s always a moment of panic when I drop my pants.
Tell that to Ronnie coleman lol
There’s no need. His new hips say enough lol

Duke,
Are young guys in Australia familiar with those two movies? I watched Friday at least 50 times in high school. I didn’t see Taxi Driver till my early 20s.
I think, if I had to choose, that shadowboxing is my favourite weird thing people do in gyms.
I just love it. There was a guy throwing little jabs and stuff in between his squats today.
I just love it. It’s so cute watching the little hard man practice for the fight he’ll never actually get into.
So… how about that women’s speed skating? I find this a very watchable sport haha
There’s no way someone just goes “I know! I’ll shadowbox between sets!”. So they must see someone else doing it and think “that looks bad ass and makes me a better fighter too!”
I’ve been thinking really hard, and I still can’t say whether I’ve seen more misguided displays of faux-masculinity at the gym or at the bar. It’s definitely close.
consider this: the guys doing it at the gym are sober
Listen hippie, I’ve seen the preworkout kits in gym bags. Don’t try to tell me that you and your drugger friends are sober.
I didn’t say that I was sober…
Id say most of my generation is likely not familiar with those movies. Ive grown up loving watching the classics and would rather watch forrest gump then some other stupid movie thats come out in the last couple of years.
I like to listen to the eagle while lifting sometimes to take the edge off of the metal.
Fascinating that Forrest Gump is now considered a ‘classic’ which also implies that it’s ‘old’. My idea of watching the classics includes Roman Holiday, Sunset Boulevard, Casablanca, Gone With the Wind, Psycho, The Wizard of Oz, Cool Hand Luke, and The Sting.
I think this is one of those indicators that I’m getting old…
For the first time in a long time I’ve gotten “judgy” about someone else’s lifts, typically it is what it is and I let sleeping dogs lie, but there’s a buddy of mine who has recently gone more towards strength training and away from crossfit style workouts…his strength has increased dramatically, but he uses extremely short ranges of motion (quarter squat gang) and then actively compares lifts with me, “Ha, you’re only squattin’ 315? Man, you outweigh me by like 25lbs and I just hit 295!” Man, I thought I was past the Judy Judgerson stage, apparently I am not haha
I love reading Lee Boyce’s articles!
I think it’s because I can relate to him better than any author I’ve come across to this point. He’s about my height and writes a lot of stuff that address lever lengths. He’s also stronger than me so he’s a good role model for a tall, lanky guy. I can’t just cry “I’m tall” and quit. He’s also somewhat of a normal human being (unlike Shaw, Thor, and other tall lifters frequently referenced).
He’s a successful coach/trainer and realizes that most people are average at best. Unlike Jim Wendler, he’s not telling people they should be dating a high school catcher because they can’t lift X amount of weight. He doesn’t take an all or nothing approach and you can see it in his writing.
He’s also recovering from a horrible injury and I think you can see a new perspective in his writing. He’s right when he says/writes things like “will a 40 year old guy’s life be any better deadlifting 500 lbs compared to 400 lbs?” For 99% of the population, the answer is no.
I’m all about the present. I think what you can do today is more impressive than what you could do 10 years ago. So you squatted 500 lbs in 2005? Awesome, tell me again why you quit lifting weights and got fat(ter)?
Applying that to my own life means thinking about my lifting longevity. I’d rather take a smart approach and hang around a 350-400 lb squat (or whatever lift) into my 50’s, 60s, and even 70’s than to hit a 500 lb squat now and then be a gimpy mess who puts three plates on the leg press when I’m 55.
There’s a good chance I have this mindset because I’m nowhere near strong by T-Nation standards. I’ll never hit those big numbers. Maybe I’m just choosing the more realistic path?
I don’t understand… how could he have done CrossFit and squat like that? They go ATG and force ranges of motion regardless of injury risk.
And don’t feel bad. He’s calling you out and trying to make you sound weak compared to him. Set him straight.
CrossFit “style”…lots of higher intensity, high rep range, running type stuff, kind of used it as an umbrella term, ha. He trained for a bunch of the Spartan races.
Yeah, I dunno if he is or not, I think he just genuinely doesn’t have the body awareness to realize he’s squatting 4-6" high every time haha I’ve tried to approach it delicately, when spotting, “Hey man, want me to call depth for you?” “No, no I’m good.”
See theres your problem, gotta be hard as fuck. Put him in his place. Tell him straight up how it is. If he still shuts it down, then punch him in the throat.
