I was in Ecuador a few years back, part of the trip included staying a couple nights with a native family in the Amazon. The first day we went into the rivers climbing waterfalls and exploring the jungle, pretty cool stuff and we worked up a good appetite.
They served us a chicken soup and some sides to go with it, delicious. Our trip leader then asked if we wanted dessert living or dead, so me being the smart-ass I am, said living of course. A couple minutes later the matriarch comes out of their kitchen with a giant leaf, she unrolled it to display a handful of giant ass beetle larvae. The kind that grow up to be dung beetles the size of a fist, they were roughly the size of my thumb.
The five of us on the trip combined for shock, amusement, and repulsion. We spent a good 20-30 seconds just staring, chatter within the group of “no way” “I could never”, but I just stared, silently. Then with the quickness I grabbed one of those fuckers, popped it in my mouth, and chowed down. It tried to escape so I had to bite it, and it was like an olive oil explosion. More of an unpleasant mouth feel than taste really. Spit the pincers out at the end.
Everyone, including the trip leader and the natives, was shocked. Apparently it’s quite rare that someone actually eats one living. Our group was bummed about the lack of warning because they wanted to video it but no way I could’ve given myself a little time to think it over haha.
Later that night I accidentally married the shamans daughter but she declined to come back to the States with me, so not sure if it’s really official.

End of first week back at school. All kids are tired and have been grumpy little sods all day. Thinking about selling them for scientific research!!

And now for a confession: my wife recently has started to trend towards being vegan/vegetarian and after looking into it I think I’m going to try a bit of it with her. The practices in factory farming are fairly horrible and if I can avoid supporting that it’s probably a good idea.
Buuuuut… I love meat so I got to looking into mock-meat alternatives and this one looks awesome:
It’s only available in restaurants and luckily there are two in my town that have it. Gonna try it soon.
Beyond Burger is the best one I’ve tried as far as the veggie patties go, Gardein makes pretty good stuff too, but I’m trying not to load up on soy protein. I don’t k ow if the estrogenic effects were overblown but I’d rather not risk it

@Lonnie123 have you thought about buying meat directly from local farmers? Most small family farms take much better care of their animals

Not really, no. Didn’t really know it was an option.
I’ve looked at stuff like that in the past (ordering meat online, for example) and generally speaking it seems so damn expensive I just can’t justify it (like 300-400% store bought prices)
If you know of a place online I’d be happy to look at it
