While I like a lot of what PC says both about training and life generally, I think the dude has a massive chip on his shoulder about something or things. Perhaps it’s because he never achieved as much as he felt he could. Who knows? I know his aversion to being challenged is something I haven’t seen from other guys whose ideas I like like Wendler, Swede Burns, Dave Tate, etc.
Yeah, his advice on training is generally good. It’s just the way he presents it at times that ticks people off I guess. He presents them in a way that he steps on other people in the process, as if it were a total necessity. And yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s because of some sort of insecurity like you said.
I really like this about Wendler and Tate
“What do you think about this person thinking or saying this about you?”
“I don’t give a fuck”
Ah, classic. Haha. I hope Gen Z takes notes
Yeah, but none of them invented a recovery paradigm, have they?
I’d have a chip on my shoulder too if everybody was using my recovery response unacknowledged.
Paul is a good, successful coach and he has the score on the board in his own pursuit of fitness. Everything you want from someone talking fitness, he also talks a bunch of sense when it comes to men’s issues and just living a good life.
That said, it does him no favours when other successful coaches have discussions with him and he tries to score points and insults them when they are keeping it civil and have an actual discussion. It actually works against most of the advice he gives to others.
The Greg Nuckols episode was particularly embarrassing, the guy was basically saying he agreed with just about everything PC was saying on the subject and he got called a fat fuck in return.
So it’s a defect of personality. Figures.
Or he figures he’ll just try the insta-trainer approach and shit on anyone who questions him. Which, in fairness, seems to be buying him some new followers but I suspect it’s also costing him followers.
How many of you watch people training in the gym and just want to say NO!!
Since I moved to Ultra, doesn’t happen. At Elite, fucking plenty. Except that was when I cared. Now if you want to carry on like a fruitloop with weights that’s your business as long as you keep to yourself
Yes that is kinda my view these days too. If I see the stupidity I just shake my head to myself and get on with my own shit.
I think so. I said to him that I don’t put a lot of weight in being big and ripped and prefer being strong and he said I was wrong because big guys get more attention. lol I didn’t bother following up with that is not attention that I want… No point.
So you were wrong because you was more interested in just being strong for your own personal goals? What the hell.!
I often want to say no. I often want to go and help, but these days the most I will allow myself is a visible grimmace. If they catch it and want to ask id be happy to help though. Most recently I saw the ugliest squat form, with knees just caving heavily and all the weight rolling in on the ankles. These were clearly warmup reps too and all I could think was that this guy is going to snap something as soon as he loads the bar. At the end of the day its just not my place to say.
From what I know Greg former education is way above his not to mention his achievements on the platform.
It’s amazing how easy guys will get butt hurt over this.Even if they are not experienced and the guy advising is a elite level guy.
This is fairly telling right here, surely?
Were you watching me? You could have come over and said hi
That is telling. That sounds like the mind set of a young man and not someone middle age.
Why would you do anything if someone else doesn’t notice?
No escape from reality:
Paul Carter: Do you plan on competing in powerlifting or strongman?
If not, then I don’t understand the desire to build maximal strength. At all.
strongmangoals: I compete in strongman (poorly haha). Even if I didn’t, I would want to develop maximal strength. I wouldn’t want it at the sake of everything else (ie. Weighing 400lbs) but I’d definitely favour it over maximised muscle development.
Different strokes, I guess. As me and my kids are getting older, I am considering my choices though.
Paul Carter: Being jacked > any amount of strength
Trust me, when I walk around at various BBing events with my friends who are pros, the looks they get and the amount of attention is insane.
EDIT: Gah, screwed up the formatting and lost the bit where the strength gains only count in the gym.
Hmm. Personal achievement?
