Rant not a confession.
After squating 330lb for 9 reps 2 weeks ago and then doing it for an easy 6 last week (easy session after a game) I lumped 350lb on the bar to see what I could do.
2 sets of 1 rep.
I’m gutted. As I know why I’m failing.
I know it’s not “heavy” but I’m working in the range of a 400lb+ squat. And I just can’t convince myself I’m that strong. Everytime I thinking about putting more than 330lb on the bar I can’t think straight. My prep and set up go to shit, my warm up feels super heavy, I’m loose, I decend too quickly and double bounce. I mean I just had to remind myself how to squat high bar. So frustrated.
One way that really helped me was to practice going through cues all the time, do it from your first warm up set to your last working set.
If you do this long enough you find that you can escape to autopilot and when things get heavy. You will still unrack the weight and go “holy fuck how am I ever going to get this up” but you will give yourself something of a process to execute so it becomes less about not dying.
If you get exposed to pushing through hard weight often enough your brain will start to trust you and the freak out will be more manageable (just lol)
Thank man.
Yeah I’m too caught up in whether I can do it. I need to focus on just doing it.
The issue is I’m i was in the hole - loose as hell. No real core brace, back all squidgy. I’m lucky I made it up.
Then the second attempt as I’d been so inefficient with the first attempt I was fried.
Live and learn. I’ll try it again soon. I’ll hopefully get a better result.
How about some partials or heavy eccentrics to build confidence?
i think if you take it as what it was meant to be a medium for entertainment then its fine. There are great old strength documentaries and videos on there as well as old sport matches, music etc etc. I think if you start to use it for life coaching or as a medium for transferal of factual information then you start to have problems
I doubt I’d have gotten it up either, given the same circumstances.
I set off the lunk alarm at cardiac rehab!

I go to YouTube for Music and Product reviews. Gotta love the product reviews.
See, I’m the complete opposite. I check out as soon as something is a video rather than something I can read. Main reason I stopped going to the JTS site a while back was most of the content became videos. Same reason I like EFTS and (old) T-Nation: lots of reading.
Mostly it’s a time thing for me. I can read an article pretty fast, but even a short video will take me longer.
Very much the same. Videos take too long. Especially so when youtube only pays out at a certain threshold.
Did you see this?
@carlbm, think you can rig up something like this?

Yes exactly precisely I did accentued eccentric squats and deadlifts with CT. Since I don’t have weight releasers I would just use pins and change the weights between concentric/eccentric
Thanks for all of the suggestions but I think my real issue is I’m being a massive pussy and need to boss my own head space.
There is no reason I can’t hit 5-6 reps at 350lb. No reason at all. I just have to do it!
That’s true. A long time ago I had to load up a couple of plates then just dump them off of my shoulders on to the pins to have confidence that they would work and that nothing bad would happen.
Conditioning. It’s not just for strength.
That’s some real big dick energy to make that much noise in the gym ha.
Home gyms. I’ve only lifted or worked out in commercial gyms a few times in my life.
Also, the guys I lift with are fully aware that I’m a goof, and match mine with their own.
Living the dream man. But that makes much more sense. One day ill push myself hard enough to fail a squat.
I have ego problems and am impatient and a new lifter. I’ve definitely tested my safety bars ![]()
Ordered new rack yesterday. Will have massive orgasm when it arrives. Have to make sure I have wet wipes on hand.
