The Flame-Free Confession Thread II

I live in Asia(sorry, can’t give more details). My wife was from Nanchang. There are other Asian Chinese here too. @alex44938, @Benanything, @punnyguy Ben may have changed his username.

Thought you were in Manhattan.

Eons ago, I scored higher on the verbal than the math on the SATs, as an immigrant from HK.

Between Senior-itis, a shitty teacher, and a confirmed acceptance into my Ivy school of choice, I flunked HS calculus. Did not heed warning signs due to “birthright” LOL, entered college as an engineer, flunked a couple more courses, was put on academic probation, saw the light, and transferred to the Economics dept. (no, it’s not a real science LOL) Sooo much easier.

My final confession: I should’ve been a psych major, because I see shitty people, no studying needed.

No, I’m from and grew up in manhattan. Moved to Shanghai 4 years ago

I’m on the phone with my girlfriend right now and she just asked me why I’m laughing so hard.

Now you tell me how the fuck I’m supposed to explain this to her :joy:

Nailed it. It never took off because you really can’t start light and progress slowly with it. The results speak for themselves, though.

I’m nearly 1000 posts behind in the beta-oribter thread. I’m thinking about using my usual Game of Thrones time to read it.

Is this a creative euphemism for spending time on the toilet?

Haha Is it now.

I miss China: the food, the alcohol, the people, the culture, the freedom and the escape (Ironic coming from an American but I digress). It’s like a different world over there

SO TRUE!!!
People can complain all they want about the “communist dictatorship” or “violations of privacy”, but I have had the freedom to wander around the city by myself since 9th grade, don’t need a drivers liscence or parents to chauffer me around and feel safe to go anywhere, anytime without fear of getting shot, raped murdered or worse. Definitely an upgrade from Manhattan

Also, even if something did happen, the perp would be caught within 48 hours and in jail by the end of the week.

As a foodie, I can also attest to the much greater variety of exotic fruits and dishes practically on demand (Hema and MeiTuan are like uber eats on steriods) anytime, anywhere. However, the infiltration of western culture has resulted in a certain loss of tradition, which is pretty sad.

I’ve long been telling my Western and local friends that since embracing capitalism, China, while still having lots of stiff laws and regulations, has a lot more freedom than lots of Western and Westernized countries because these laws and regulations are either not consistently enforced, or they’re easy to get around. It’s a lot easier for me to do business there now than with other countries.

It depends on where you live and which part of town you go to. And this is a more recent thing. Prior to the late 2000s, things were a A LOT messier.

I feel this cannot be taken lightly, nor should the fact that China is still labeling itself “socialist” be conflated with actual communism/socialism like a lot of political opportunists with agendas outside of China will be doing soon. It has been gradually been shifting away from this since the Open Door Policy. China isn’t really communist or socialist now. It is a lot closer to “State Capitalism” within a one-party state. Whether this current government set-up will prove to be good or bad in the long run is anyone’s guess at the moment. I do not see the anti-corruption movement lasting very much longer tbh.

I agree, I feel that China is still quite misunderstood. However, I’m also pretty worried about Xi’s recent policies that put politics over economics.

Yeah, the political culture is pretty messed up, but it’s gotten a lot better with social media

Yeah, I’m seriously in awe of China’s youth today. They were actually staking out the homes of corrupt politicians and putting up 24 hour cctv footage on youku and social media just a couple of years ago lol.

God damn!

I find when guys come on this s ite and state they just want to look athletic odd. I just find the statement too vague.Considering that looking and being are not the same thing.

I confess that I love finding examples of athletes that look awful when they do this.

“Oh, you wanna look like a boxer? You mean like Butterbean? Comeback era George Foreman? Oh, an MMA fighter, like Roy Nelson? Fedor? You wanna look like a football player like William Perry? Maybe a strongman like Glen Ross?”
