Why do people keep getting this wrong? Communism isn’t totalitarian. It is supposed to be a Stateless society. See “withering away of the state” by Engels.
Socialism is totalitarian. All the “communist” countries like Russia and China were in the socialist phase. They never made it to the comnunist phase because no government is ever going to give up the kind of power they had once you give it to them.
Which is why communism doesn’t work.
