Yeah I’m talking about bodyweight and gym weights too. Here in Italy we don’t even know what a pound is, so it’s hard to even use it in any real life instance.
But man, I was looking at my Deadlift pr and for a second I thought, “wait, how many pounds is that?” to compare that to the numbers I see on the net, as if for a second kilos had lost meaning to me lol
Also on a kinda related note, I’ve always wondered this: without looking it up, how many English speaking people know where the abbreviation “lb” for pounds comes from?
Yeah, I was genuinely curious because pound in Italian is libbra, so it’s pretty easy to see the relationship. Not so in English.
But I’ll admit to not knowing how the fuck a unit of measure which supposedly was created in the Roman Empire, since it comes from Latin, has ended up being used, under a completely different name, on the other end of the globe.
Edit: okay maybe the UK had something to do with it now that I think about it.
English is three or four languages standing on top of each other wearing a long coat, hiding in a dark alleyway so that it can knock out other languages and rifle through their pockets for grammar, spelling and syntax rules to steal.
My favourite part about language was just how few rules we need to communicate - even communicate effectively - yet still there does exist an overbaring set of rules abide to by.
The real cherry ontop is that two parties can both abide perfectly by those rules and still completely miscommunicate.
The part that’s really confusing is that English is backwards. We put our subjects and verbs in the wrong order.
The worst part is that Americans put more effort into creating new words and phrases (or redefining current words) than they/we do learning proper grammar.
I confess that I simply don’t “get” people that say they want to follow a program but then don’t. They’ll modify the hell out of it to the point it’s unrecognizable and basically what they were running before the program, and then complain about the lackluster results.
And I ESPECIALLY see this deviance when it comes to nutrition with the program. People will run Building the Monolith and not eat the dozen eggs and 1.5lbs of beef a day, they’ll do Super Squats without the gallon of milk a day, they’ll run Deep Water with a high carb diet. “The author doesn’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to nutrition”. Maybe not, but they DO know what they’re talking about when it comes to results.
The kicker being the people who do what you describe seen to be the least experienced people. The ones who should not even consider modifying anything!
